Dear Colleagues, The intensive review course is increasingly being availed of as a method of revision both for the Diploma in Primary Care and the MFD examinations. In addition there are regular attendees who use it to update their knowledge of a wide spectrum of dental issues. The excellent team of lecturers assembled for the day have been given the brief of providing information in the form of five tips relevant to the area they have been asked to present. There is a wide diversity of topics from infection control to prosthodontics and there will be practice question sessions along with an exam overview to assist potential candidates. It promises to be an exciting, intensive day and I look forward to seeing you there.

SPEAKERS’ BIOGRAPHY Dr. Peter Cowan Dr. Peter Cowan qualified in dentistry in 1978 from Trinity College Dublin. He was awarded FDRCSR(Edin) by examination in 1981 and the Specialist Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI (FFDRCSIrel) in Restorative Dentistry in 1984. He was a lecturer and later clinical tutor in the Dublin Dental University School and Hospital between 1981-1991 and has been a senior lecturer and examiner for the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI since 1995 to date. He is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has published both nationally and internationally. Dr. Cowan is a past Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI (2001-2004) and is currently Chief Executive Officer of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI. He is the Faculty’s examinations co-ordinator and chief examiner for the Membership and Fellowship examinations. He is a specialist oral surgeon and runs a clinical practice in Dublin limited to minor Oral Surgery with a special interest in implant dentistry.

Prof. David Ryan Professor David Ryan qualified in Dentistry from UCD in 1971 and in Medicine from UCD in 1977. He obtained the Diploma in Child Health from UCD in 1981 and Fellowships from RCSI in both Oral Surgery and General Surgery in 1983. After completing higher training in London 1988 Professor. Ryan was appointed as Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to both the Dental and Mater Hospitals in Dublin in 1989 retiring in 2011. Currently he is Adjunct Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial at Trinity College, Dublin.

Dr. Michael Freedman Dr. Michael Freedman qualified from the Dublin Dental Hospital in 2006. Following this he completed his specialist training in Oral Surgery in Dublin and went on to complete a Master of Science in Oral Medicine at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He provides a complete range of services in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine and Implant Dentistry at the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin.

Dr. Albert Leung Dr. Albert Leung is a Principal Clinical Teaching Fellow and Programme Co-ordinator for the MSc in Restorative Dental Practice at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London. He is an external BDS Examiner for University College Cork and examines the ORE for the UK General Dental Council. He chairs the FGDS/MGDS Examinations Committee and is a Member of the Board of the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

Dr. Eddie Cotter Dr. Edward Cotter graduated from Dublin Dental School in 1988. He received his post graduate training in Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa. He then completed a Fellowship in Prosthodontics at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Iowa City. This was followed by a Fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas. He is in Practice limited to Prosthodontics, Maxillofacial Prosthetics and Dental Oncology.

Dr. Paul Quinlan Dr. Paul Quinlan graduated from the Dublin Dental School 1991. He completed an M.Sc. in periodontology at the Eastman Dental School, London, in 1993. In 1996 he was awarded a fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and he also received a Fulbright Scholarship for study in the USA. He completed the periodontal and prosthodontic training programs at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001. He returned to Ireland and commenced specialist practice limited to prosthodontics and periodontics at Fitzwilliam Square, Dublin. He is a diplomat of the American Boards of Periodontology and Prosthodontics. He is a fellow of the ITI. He has lectured in Ireland, the UK and Internationally. 5

Dr. Hal Duncan Dr. Hal Duncan qualified from University of Glasgow in 1993. After several practice and dental school appointments, he worked in several specialist endodontic practices in Ireland and England from 1998-2002. Dr Duncan received his postgraduate endodontic training in Guy’s Hospital London from 2002-2006. In 2008 Hal completed a collaborative research project on MTA in the University of Zurich and recently completed a fellowship in New York University on pulpal research. Since 2008 he has worked at Trinity College Dublin as a Consultant and in Endodontics. He is currently undertaking an external PhD with the University of Birmingham, England with Professor’s Tony Smith and Paul Cooper, in the area of pulpal damage, regeneration and repair. He edited the textbook ‘Pitt Fords Problems based learning in Endodontology’, has contributed to other leading endodontic textbooks and published several articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

Dr. PJ Byrne Dr. PJ Byrne graduated in Dentistry in 1982 from University College Cork. He completed a number of hospital appointments followed by a period in practice in Periodontology and Oral Surgery. In 1990 he completed his MSc at the Eastman Dental Institute London, in Periodontology. He was awarded the Sir Wilfred Fish Research Prize by the British Society of Periodontology in 1990. He held posts as Registrar in Oral Surgery in Dublin Dental Hospital and in the Department of Periodontology at the Eastman Dental Institute, London. In 1991, he was elected by examination, Fellowship in Dental Surgery, F.D.S. RCSEd and Fellowship of the Faculty of Dentistry, F.F.D. RCSI. He has been in referral practice in Dublin in Periodontology, Oral Surgery & Implant Dentistry, and lecturer in Periodontology at Dublin Dental School & Hospital, Trinity College since 1991. He is The Director of the Programme for Clinical Dental Photography (Postgraduate Core Course) since 1998. He was awarded a Fellowship, F.I.C.D. by the International College of Dentists in 2002 and in 2007elected a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Byrne was elected Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry RCSI in September 2007 until 2011

Dr. John Walsh Dr. John Walsh received his undergraduate dental degree from Trinity College in 1974 and was awarded the Sheldon Friel Prize. After a year in private practice in England he received the American Dental Society of Europe Scholarship award that enabled him to attend the Graduate Paedodontic Program at Indiana University School of Dentistry where he received his Masters Degree in 1977. He was awarded the Ralph E. McDonald Scholarship and the G. R. Baker prize. Subsequently he gained entry to the Graduate Orthodontic Program at the University Of Washington from where he obtained his Masters Degree in Orthodontics in 1986. On his return to Ireland he continued to participate as a part time lecturer in the Division of Child Dental Health at Dublin University Dental Hospital. In 1989 he became the first European to successfully complete the Board certification process of the American Board of Paediatric Dentistry. He was awarded an FFD (Ad Eundem) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1997. He is currently Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry, RCSI and continues in specialist practice in Orthodontics.

Dr. Ebrahim Al Awadhi Dr. Ebrahim Al Awadhi qualified from Dublin Dental School and Hospital in 1998. He then went to work for 2 years in the Eastern Health Board. He completed his MFD examination in Dublin in 2000. Later that year, he attended the Eastman Dental Institute where he completed his Masters in Orthodontics in 2002. A Membership of Orthodontics (MOrth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland followed. He worked for 2 years in the Regional Orthodontic Unit in St. James Hospital in Dublin before moving back to Dublin Dental Hospital where he obtained his PhD from Trinity College, Ireland. He has research interests in Temporary anchorage devices, orthodontically induced root resorption and Invisalign. He is a consultant lecturing in Orthodontics and currently is the Director of Teaching and Learning (Post Grad) in Trinity College, Ireland. He also maintains a part time private practice since 2004. 6

FACULTY OF DENTISTRY ASM 2014 OCTOBER 30th & 31st 2014 The Faculty of Dentistry RCSI is delighted to announce that its Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) 2014 will be held in Dublin on October 30th & 31st 2014. The title of this year’s ASM is “Clinical Controversies in Dental Practice”, and will include lectures on caries management (including “seal or save”?), orthodontics (including “six month smiles”), the role of fluoride, drug therapeutics and the dental practitioner, adhesion, radiology, endodontics and oral surgery. Confirmed overseas speakers include Amr Morsi (New York), StJohn Crean (Preston), Avijit Banerjee (London), Mark Hector (Dundee), Chris Deery (Sheffield) and Ross Hobson (Newcastle). We also have many accomplished national speakers including Hal Duncan (endodontics), Garry Fleming (adhesion) and Brian Bourke (orthodontics). On the Friday afternoon we will have a special Leo Sheridan Lecture session, titled “Current controversies in the surgical management of head and neck cancer” to be delivered by Brian Schmidt (New York) and David Vaughan (Aintree, Liverpool). The meeting will be of interest to dental practitioners (both general and specialist) in Ireland and overseas. We would also like to encourage all of our graduates (e.g. Members, Fellows) and our many friends who have attended our ASMs over the years to attend during this year’s meeting.
