Communications General Eaton’s Cutler Hammer IT. Motor Control Center (MCC) is designed to allow multiple protocol communications. These include, but are not limited to, DeviceNet and Cutler-Hammer’s PowerNet. DeviceNet is a control field network that allows users to control and monitor devices in the MCC. PowerNet is a power monitoring network which allows users to monitor meters, breakers and other power distribution equipment. The use of these networks significantly reduces field wiring and speeds up installation and commissioning of the motor control center.

IT. MCCs are available with DeviceNet Communications. DeviceNet is a device level open communication network linking DeviceNet-capable control products, such as IT. Starters, Adjustable Frequency Drives, operator interfaces, I/O blocks, IT. soft starters and iPCs. These products are prewired in the MCC with DeviceNet cable (see Figure 1). Available control and monitoring features of IT. Starters include: ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■

Intelligent Technologies Motor Control Centers Automation and Communication Communications — DeviceNet (Continued)

Need Photo QCPort DeviceNet Adapter

DeviceNet communications to starter and I/O blocks can be be more cost-effectively applied using QCPort connections. QCPort allows multiple devices to be connected to a single DeviceNet node, reducing the number of scanner cards that may be required in an application. A QCPort DeviceNet adapter is located in the power supply unit of a structure and connects a maximum of 63 starters that share a single DeviceNet node (see Figure 2). If motor status and control information, which includes running current and cause of trip, is needed, then one QCPort DNA is required for every 21 starters. If status and control information, which does not include running current and cause of trip, is needed, then one QCPort DNA is required for every 63 starters. An MCC with QCPort devices includes a communications bus located in the vertical bus area of the structure. Each QCPort unit has a communication stab that connects the unit with the communication bus when the unit is inserted. The DeviceNet specification is controlled by the Open Device Vendors Association (ODVA). The DeviceNet system can be controlled from: iPC (industrial personal computer) PC-based control software. ■ DeviceNet scanner cards designed for leading PLC and DCS systems. ■

Communications — PowerNet

The IT. MCC is available with the PowerNet communications devices to the following: the IQ family of metering devices, addressable relays and energy sentinels.

PLCs Programmable Logic Controllers can be mounted in the IT. MCCs in a wide variety of configurations. Popular mounting configurations include small PLCs unit mounted to replace relays, medium sized PLCs with I/O for control of an MCC lineup, and remote I/O modules mounted in an MCC and connected to the main CPU via coaxial cable. Due to the flexibility of PLCs and the wide variety of applications and configurations, the IT. MCC is designed to meet the mounting requirements of most applications.

Monitoring and Diagnostic Tools The IT. MCC has several tools that allow a user to monitor and troubleshoot the MCC and the connected loads. One of these tools is the Starter Monitoring Unit (SMU). This device allows the user to scroll through the starters in a control center and display: Status. Current. ■ FLA setting. ■ % FLA. ■ Cause of trip. ■

The SMU is an 8-inch (203.2 mm) flat screen and takes up 2X 12 inches (304.8 mm). In order to use an SMU, all the starters that are to be monitored need to be upgraded to QCPort. Also, structures with monitored starters need to have QCPort bus added to them. Another monitoring tool is MCC Manager. This tool is used in conjunction with an MCC that is already configured for communications. This tool can be run on a customer iPC/PC or run on an iPC mounted in the motor control center. MCC Manager provides a graphical interface that shows status of all units in an elevation view. It also provides a graphical display of each unit when selected. This will display: Status. Current. ■ Breaker status. ■ Cause of trip. ■

MCC Manager can also be used to configure your network and configure devices on the network.

Additional Services Startup Assistance To ensure complete customer satisfaction and to expedite equipment startup for MCCs, this service provides a factory-trained representative at the job-site during equipment energization. This service is provided on a fixed price basis. In addition to factory directed startup, the standard equipment warranty is extended for a period of 24 months. This service is especially beneficial when solid-state equipment is incorporated within the MCC due to the flexibility in adjusting solid-state equipment for each application.

Maintenance and Operational Training A full range of Training and Operational Training programs are available for all types of MCC mounted equipment. In addition, Preventative Maintenance programs are available to ensure years of trouble-free operation.

Seismic Qualification Seismic testing has been completed for FreedomE and AdvantageE MCCs. Freedom and Advantage MCCs are qualified for UBCT Seismic Zones 1 and 2, IBC and CBC without modification. For Seismic Zones 3 and 4, additional end plates are required. Note: Contact Cutler-Hammer for availability of seismically qualified MCC.

Retrofits Existing installations can many times benefit from some of the “new” technology equipment available in today’s MCCs. Cutler-Hammer offers a full range of retrofit capabilities to upgrade existing MCC lineups. Examples include: vacuum contactors, reduced voltage solid-state starters, solid-state metering and solid-state overload protection. Starter retrofit kits for selective competitor MCCs are also available. Consult factory for availability.

I/O modules are one node on the network. D77 I/O is QCPort enabled. D77 I/O used in a structure with a QCPort bus does not require a QCPort DeviceNet adapter. If D77 I/O is not in a structure with a QCPort bus, a QCPort DeviceNet adapter should be added. Up to six D77 I/O modules can be in one 6-inch (152.4 mm) unit. Add 6 inches (152.4 mm) for each additional six I/O modules.
