Installing and Configuring Hummingbird Exceed What it is: Hummingbird Exceed is an x-server application that gives the user the ability to run graphical scientific/analytical applications on a Unix server and displayed the results on their local pc (e.g., rich graphs, charts that would not be possible under a telnet (text only) session in Unix.). The Unix “host” does all the work, and the PC becomes, in effect, the Unix controller – keyboard, mouse, display, from the user’s desktop. How to Install it:

The program resides on W:\public\install\exceed\v61.

Run the “MSETUP.EXE” program to install Hummingbird. Note that the serial number can be found in the same folder in the file “Serial.txt” When you double click on MSETUP.EXE, the following screen appears:

Note that this is a Multiplatform program; the setup program detects what operating system is installed on the PC and installs the appropriate components for that OS. Click on “Install Exceed”

Click on “Yes, I agree”

Click on “Next”

Select “No” and then click on “Next”

The home directory is filled in automatically, so just click on “Next”

The user directory is filled in automatically; just click on “Next”

The default components and fonts are filled in automatically; just click on “Next”

Type in the Serial Number: EXMPIU-082871 Leave the Site/Volume License Number blank Type in the Site Contact Name (usually, Columbia University).Then, click on “Next” A couple of screens pertaining to registering the product will display. You can register, or skip over registration and register at another time. Take your pick. The following screen appears after the registration screen:

Setup detects the language in use on the PC and fills in the “Keyboard File to be used” field automatically. You should not have to make any changes here unless it does not detect US keyboard (in which case you would scroll through the list of language files until you get to us.kbd). Click on “Next”

Type in a password* for Xconfig. It would appear you can type anything you want here, but for consistency’s sake, enter something that is agreed upon by the department. Then type it again. Click “Next”

The program can automatically put a shortcut to Exceed on the Desktop; the default setting is “Yes”. Click “Next”

(I skipped the X-server Tune up…don’t know what this does)

Note that this particular installation was performed on an NT machine. If it had been done on a Win9x PC, the appropriate OS information would be indicated on this screen Click on “OK”

The inevitable Reboot. Click “Yes”. After the PC reboots, there are some additional settings that must be configured before the program can be launched and tested. Configure:

First, change a couple of settings in the Xconfig controls. Click on Start -> Programs -> Exceed -> Xconfig

Enter your password* and click “OK” The following icons access additional settings:

Screen Definition should be set to Single Communication should be set to Passive

Next, configure the settings for Xstart:

Click on Start -> Programs -> Exceed -> Xstart

A screen with a number of options appears. (the following screenshot shows an already-configured Xstart screen)

Start Method: set this to REXEC (TCP/IP) Program Type: set this to Xwindow User: (type your username for your gracie account) Host: type in gracie.gsb.Columbia.edu Password: (type your password for your GRACIE account) Host Type: set this to UNIX

Command line: should be typed as follows:

/usr/openwin/bin/xterm –ls –display [IPADDRESS]:0.0& note: for Win9x: [IPADDRESS] you will get by running winipcfg. (start->run->winipcfg a window displays the IP address, as well as other information). Enter the IP address exactly as it appears and enter it in the command line, omitting the “[]” characters for NT/2000: [IPADDRESS] you will get by running

ipconfig. (start->run->command a dos window opens. Type “ipconfig” (without the quotes) and enter. The information displays in the DOS window. When you have finished recording the IP address info, type “exit” to close the DOS window (without the quotes) Enter the ip address exactly as it appears and enter it in the command line, omitting the “[]” characters also note:

in the sample command line above, enter single spaces between xterm and –ls and display and IPADDRESS and no spaces between the IPADDRESS:0.0&

example: /usr/openwin/bin/xterm –ls –display 128.59.172.127:0.0& (the IP address will vary from machine to machine)

Description: gracie.xw

Save your configuration file by choosing File -> Save from the Xstart menu bar options. You will be asked for a name for this file, for example “gracie.xs” Verify your connection settings by selecting RUN from the menu bar options on the Xstart screen. Optionally, to make things a bit easier for the user, you can create a shortcut on their desktop by drilling down through Explorer, then Program Files, then Exceed, then User. Double click on User, look in the right hand

pane and search for the file “gracie.xw” and then right-click to access the “send to desktop as a shortcut” option. *I just used my own password in this step
