Introducing the most powerful, sophisticated and smallest Super Power 13 ever

Empowering people starts with people

For people with severe to profound hearing loss, life can be an uphill climb. Their reduced ability to receive auditory information makes interacting, communicating and participating very difficult. Empowering them to overcome the everyday challenges both they and their families face requires considerable insight, groundbreaking technology and a talent for innovative thinking.

Wide Dynamic Range Compression (WDRC) systems.

In Oticon Chili, new approaches in audiology help to optimise audibility and speech understanding. An exceptional amplification process provides excellent audibility and minimises the distortion so often experienced with

Oticon Chili offers more power and peace of mind than any other solution in the super power segment.

Withstanding the demands of everyday life In terms of cosmetics, comfort and reliability, Oticon Chili more than meets people’s expectations. It also offers new opportunities to communicate and be entertained via the ConnectLine family of audio accessories.

Sarah, Doreen, Eric, Ellen and Kenneth gave us a new perspective on how we can meet their very real challenges and give people the ability to hear more, understand more and do more.

Oticon Chili: So much more than Super Powered

Providing audibility and speech clarity at frequencies with greater hearing loss has always been a challenge. Techniques were developed to move important high frequency information to frequencies with a wider residual dynamic range, despite the danger of destroying the natural structure of the speech signal.

Thanks to recent technological advances we can now make information from the entire frequency spectrum audible and control acoustic feedback even further, to allow people to use their residual hearing in the most direct and natural manner.

Oticon Chili heralds the arrival of a new generation of instruments promising more than just super power: ·· Speech Guard ·· Spatial Noise Management ·· DSEsp rationale ·· ConnectLine ·· 24/7 reliability

Oticon Chili is designed to improve intelligibility more than any other super-power solution - not only by enhancing audibility but by managing speech and noise signals in a manner appropriate for heavier hearing losses. By preserving signal fidelity we offer access to cues that are vital for speech understanding - especially for those with reduced auditory resolution.

Audiology Sharing the everyday challenge

Misinterpreting conversation People with severe to profound hearing loss often rely on lip-reading to register that someone is addressing them, and to understand what is being said. Another natural consequence of this particular form of hearing loss is an inability to localise sounds. In Oticon Chili the Speech Guard, Spatial Noise Management and Split Directionality features combine to deliver clear and comfortable speech plus a better sense of where sounds are coming from - even in demanding situations.

“I often have to remind myself to face Ken when we’re making dinner together. It‘s a difficult habit to develop, but it’s absolutely necessary for us.” Ellen Pace Kenneth’s partner

Connectivity Picking up the phone

Oticon Chili vs the everyday challenge

“Normally if I’m expecting a phone call my wife will answer first and say ‘It’s for you’, and I will be switching and plugging and go to the phone and then I can use it.” Eric Mayer HA user for over 25 years

ConnectLine – for a bigger share of life ConnectLine offers new-found freedom to chat over the phone, watch TV with friends and family and listen to music by sending the signal wireless directly to the user’s instruments. The entire system can be controlled with just a single, easy to use unit called the Streamer.

Design Being me

Nothing to hide Super power users often struggle with cumbersome hearing devices that ‘wear them’ rather than the other way round. Oticon Chili allows people to be themselves by combining an attractive discreet design with high performance and reliability. Inconspicuous control features facilitate instant muting, volume adjustment and program selection – all in a highly compact casing.

“No matter how good I look, if my hearing aids are overly noticeable or ugly it deflates me.” Sarah Davis HA user for 23 years

Let your clients inspire you Success with super power solutions depends to a large extent on the dialogue between professional and user. Probably even more so in the super power category, where people’s needs are more complex and their sensitivity to the accuracy of the fitting is much higher. Spending time with users in a series of everyday situations has taught us that being a super-power user does not necessarily make you an expert. Upgrading to a new

instrument with a different kind of signal processing can pose a major challenge for people who are already struggling to overcome the hassles of modern life. Invaluable counselling tool To help you enter a constructive dialogue with clients and to help them glean maximum benefit from Oticon Chili - we recommended handing out the “My Chili” notebook. This notebook encourages people to reflect on and

describe the acoustic characteristics of the environments they encounter; situations they find particularly difficult, the types of interaction they experience; plus potential reactions from colleagues, friends and family.

insight gained into their needs and challenges can make fine tuning more efficient and counselling more successful.

The benefit of the notebook is that it increases people’s awareness of what to expect, just as diarising their experiences helps them take control of the acclimatisation process. The input can be beneficial for you too, as

“Let’s empower people by making sure we understand and meet their real needs.”

Concepts that make a difference Speech Guard People with severe to profound hearing loss have a very limited dynamic range. So, even if audibility is restored they can still have difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, as their ability to exploit the subtle speech cues is compromised. Physiological changes can cause a reduction in frequency selectivity, which makes understanding more dependent on the amplitude changes and timing embedded in the speech signal. This is why preserving the signal in its most natural state is so important. Moving on from WDRC People with severe to profound hearing loss make particular use of ‘the speech envelope’: e.g. phoneme-to-phoneme changes in level. Until recently the amplification strategy employed relied almost entirely on Wide Dynamic Range Compression (WDRC). WDRC may provide the desired audibility, but it notably changes the natural amplitude-envelope of speech greatly obscuring one of the only remaining sources of information available to the user. In Oticon Chili, Speech

Chili with Speech Guard produces a clean signal and preserves the vital temporal cues in the speech envelope Original clean signal Oticon Chili High performing competitor

DSEsp – truly utilising the user’s auditory capacity Guard technology ensures maximum audibility and word recognition without the distortion typically encountered in WDRC systems. Protecting the speech envelope It has been well documented that providing a clear and natural signal reduces listening effort and increases the listener’s ability to follow conversations. By avoiding unnecessary rapid gain changes, Speech Guard preserves the fundamental cues of speech. Gain change is used only to ensure audibilty of soft sounds and control very loud transient sounds. In stable environments gain adjustment is gradual; hence the resulting signal more closely matches the original. In short, Speech Guard encompasses the benefits of linear and non-linear amplification systems without the pitfalls of either.

Determining the appropriate amount of gain and compression for super-power users can be challenging. While too little will leave them struggling to hear, too much can easily overload the auditory system, which may affect speech understanding. Oticon’s proprietary Dynamic Speech Enhancement rationale (DSEsp) is designed to provide the desired insertion gain and MPO, plus optimum loudness levels for varying speech inputs across the relevant frequency range. In Oticon Chili, the improved bandwidth and the inclusion of Speech Guard take this approach to a whole new level. By preserving the speech cues and by utilising more of the user’s residual dynamic range, DSEsp makes the signal far more useful for the listener. Overall loudness trimmer Oticon Chili’s Overall Loudness Trimmer helps you finetune the overall loudness to the most beneficial level for all programs, rationales and identities without having to consider frequency-specific details.

RISE 2 RISE 2 is more than equipped to tackle super-power needs the natural way. The exceptional audio quality delivered by SpeechGuard and Connect[+] represents achievements enabled by the new processing platform.

Spatial Noise Management – a smarter way to manage speech and noise

Built to last – quality to rely on

People with severe to profound hearing loss can have great difficulty selecting and following a particular speaker - a problem that Spatial Noise Management helps rectify. This system automatically turns up speech on the side where it needs to be louder while attenuating competing noise on the opposite side.

Spatial Noise Management is automatically engaged in instances where dominant noise from one side is above the speech level. Its purpose is not just to provide the much needed audibility and comfort, but also to reduce listening effort in noisy situations.

Directionality – making speech audible and comfortable Noise reduction systems, by their very nature, reduce the gain in noisy surroundings – but this can include the low frequencies, which is the main contributor to loudness perception. Many users react negatively to this loss. Loss of loudness perception can also happen when switching from omni-directional to directional mode.

All device-dependent users have one universal demand: hearing instruments that are strong enough to withstand the physical challenges of everyday life. Reliability is much more than a practical issue; it is about ‘daring to do the things I like’.

Oticon Chili is engineered to honour these essential requirements. Every aspect of reliability has been rigorously tested and proven. The endurance specifications include tolerance to free fall, high pressure, extreme temperatures, vibrations, chemicals, damp, moisture and extensive use from wear and tear.

Oticon Chili is:

Fortunately this can be avoided by keeping the low frequencies in omni mode. The fusion of Speech Guard speech processing, Spatial Noise Management and Split Directionality keeps speech sounding clear and natural – and the combination has the potential to significantly improve speech understanding even in demanding listening situations.

• Shock absorbent. The unique shock-absorbing fixation of the receiver prevents it from breaking should the instrument be dropped or fall off the ear.

• Sealed permanently on the inside. This internal seal protects the electronic parts from water, moisture and dirt.

• Resistant to water. Moisture and dirt are repelled by a full body nano-coating and a battery door that repels any water and sweat that might be trickling down the instrument.

Such measures make Oticon Chili ideal not only for active users but for anyone demanding 24/7 reliability.

BTE Super Power 13 – the most discreet device available Seven skin and hair tone colours make Oticon Chili the most discreet BTE Super Power 13 on the market today.

In Chili, advanced signal processing promises clear sound from all sources. But the user may still have difficulty separating target speech from competing babble and noise.

Multiband Adaptive Directionality makes it far easier to stay focused on the person in front. Split Directionality improves intelligibility while maintaining low frequency audibility and environmental awareness.

Directionality and Spatial Noise Management helps the user stay focused and comfortable. Undesired noise at one side is reduced to improve awareness and speech audibility from the front or other side.

Users will love the slim design as it takes up very little space on top of the ear, where space is already limited. This allows more room for glasses if people need to wear them. Oticon Chili is also easy to operate. The control features allow instant muting, volume adjustment and program selection.

Effortless access to phones, TV and mobiles Oticon ConnectLine – redefining what users can and cannot do Oticon ConnectLine offers Oticon Chili users fresh opportunities to keep in touch, stay informed and be entertained. A severe hearing loss can make using a phone or watching TV hard work, but the wireless connectivity options that are an integral part of the Oticon Chili solution totally redefines what super-power users can and cannot do.

modern everyday communication needs in one easily operated solution.

ConnectLine prevents signal degradation by transmitting original audio signals from devices such as phones, mobile phones, TVs and PCs, wirelessly to the hearing instruments. Direct transmission right from the source bypasses acoustic noise sources and offers full access to clear, undistorted sound.

If the phone should ring during their favourite show, an alert signal will be sent to both ears so they can take the call without getting off the couch, just by pushing one button. When the call ends, the Streamer control unit automatically switches back to the TV sound.

A fast track to client satisfaction Super-power users can benefit more from ConnectLine than any other user group. They can take command of the whole system with a single control unit, the Oticon Streamer. This small, elegant companion integrates all

By sending the signal directly to the user’s instruments ConnectLine allows the user to watch TV at their own preferred loudness level while the rest of the family enjoys comfortable sound from the speakers.

No conflicts The Streamer control unit provides access to the sounds the user needs to hear at the mere touch of a button. This includes switching programs, listening to the TV, muting room noise, answering their home phone or taking calls on their cell phone.

The Streamer control unit lets the user hear what they need to hear in any situation – just by the push of a button. Change programme, listen to the TV, mute room noise, answer the landline phone and pick up a mobile call.
