Introducing Connie Halliwell, Heath Village Artist-in-Residence This past spring, Heath Village was very pleased to feature Connie Halliwell as its Artist-in-Residence. Formerly of Netcong, Connie (along with her husband Tom) moved to Heath Village in October of 2015. Connie has been painting her entire life and is enormously talented. She attended Tufts University and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. Following college and while pursuing her art on the side, Connie taught 6th grade social studies (mostly) for 25 years in Long Valley. Her favorite medium is watercolors but she will also occasionally paint in acrylics. She has been active in several art organizations, especially the Art Association in Roxbury, where she served in many capacities, including president. Connie has participated in numerous art shows and feels fortunate to have won some awards for her work. Connie most often paints landscapes, but occasionally might try a coastal scene, a floral, a city-scape, a still life, or even something more abstract. She likes to capture patterns of light and shadow and often includes buildings or parts of them in her work. While they have been residents for less than a year, Connie and Tom have been associated with Heath Village since 1991, when Tom’s mother and later, Connie’s parents, became residents here. Connie led a watercolor workshop at Heath Village from 1999 through 2007. This is Connie’s third exhibit at Heath Village since 2003. Cape May, a Travelogue May 18-20, 2016 David and I, along with 26 Heath Village residents and friends left for our Cape May adventure promptly at 9:00 a.m. We stopped for lunch and a stroll around the historic town of Smithville before continuing on to Cape May. We arrived at the Grand Hotel by the Ocean late in the afternoon. After checking–in we had some time for relaxation before dinner. Dinner was delicious and was served in a private room of the hotel. Several members of the group enjoyed a walk along the promenade before turning in for the night. The following morning, after a buffet breakfast, we boarded the bus for the marina where we embarked on a 2 hour boat ride that took us out to view bottlenose dolphins and an unexpected encounter with a humpback whale. We circumnavigated Cape May and the sea was calm, which enhanced the overall enjoyment of the trip. We returned around noon, just in time for lunch and a visit to Cape May’s historic pedestrian walkway. Following lunch, we took trolley ride to view many of the beautiful Victorian homes. The ride was narrated by an excellent guide and included an opportunity to tour one of the homes: the Physick estate. We capped the day’s activities with a visit to Elaine’s Dinner Theater where we enjoyed a nice meal and a performance of “The Pink Panther Rides Again.” After discussion, it was agreed that the play was presented as a farce. The next morning we boarded the bus and departed the Grand Hotel. Before leaving, we had a pleasant visit to the Cape May Lighthouse and enjoyed an hour of free time. Back on the bus, and before returning to Heath Village, we made one more stop for lunch at a diner in East Brunswick – which accommodated us with good service and good humor. Overall, our adventure to Cape May was a great one. The trip was efficiently run and interestingly presented by the bus driver as well as both Cindy and Daisy. We were in good hands throughout the trip, which included something for everyone. And, we were blessed with beautiful weather. Craft Shop Grand Re-Opening and Toy Building with the Friendship Center It was an exciting and busy spring for the Heath Village wood workers. The fun began on March 24th when the craft shop held its Grand Re-Opening. It was a wonderful event and the craft shop looks terrific.

The wood workers are very happy with the improvements to the craft shop and have already logged in hours of building and tinkering. I wonder what toy they will build for the kids next year.

In addition to fresh paint and overall freshening up, the renovations include a new table saw and wood lathe. The maintenance staff, led mostly by the hard work of Gary Cox, also installed a new vacuum system to greatly reduce the dust. Much needed shelving was also added to help keep the place organized. Great new ceiling mounted extension cords were also installed improving access to the equipment and the all-around safety of the shop.

The improvements came just in time for the wood workers’ annual toy building program with the Friendship Center students. This year the men built spinning tops for each student. The kids had a great time coloring them and learning how to thread a shoelace through the top to make it spin around. After they decorated their toy, the wood workers demonstrated each power tool to the students and explained how they work.

Lunch on the Town: Churrascaria Paladar A unique dining experience was appreciated by those attending the Lunch on the Town at Churrascaria Paladar in the former Pump House Restaurant in Hackettstown. Churrascaria is a Brazilian steakhouse and Paladar is Portuguese for “a sense of taste.” Cuisine of both countries is served but the Rodizio is most notable. Luckily none of us were in a hurry as one by one five different skewers of meat arrived at our tables interspersed were dishes of rice and beans, greens, fried bananas, and homemade potato chips. Flan was served for dessert. This is Rodizio! Remarks heard around the tables included – “delicious, exciting, delightful, expertly served, a new experience.” All left happy to have participated in such a special lunch and eager to inform friends of this new and rare restaurant. coordinate most of the activities that involve bringing together the children and the residents.

Many of us see Pat Taylor’s always smiling face and wonder just where does she get the energy to do all the things she does at Heath Village. Well, on May 24, 2016, Pat’s hard work and volunteer spirit was formally recognized when she was inducted into the Hackettstown Area Senior Hall of Fame. She joins many current and former Heath Village residents who have also been recognized by the Senior Hall of Fame Committee for their community service to the Hackettstown Area.

In addition, she serves as the Residents’ Council Vice President, volunteers weekly at the Health Care Center, and assists Activities with several functions. She volunteers for the stage crew committee where she is responsible for the lighting and curtains for events hosted by the Women’s Association and the Friendship Center. Pat also volunteers to coordinate the Book Club, the twice-monthly Village Socials as well as the indoor Shuffle Board Club during the winter.

More specifically, Pat was recognized for her work in support of the Friendship Center where she has volunteered since her arrival at Heath Village in December 2004. While she recently stepped down, for many years she served on the Friendship Center Board, where she worked closely with the Center’s Executive Director Jennifer Jensen to make the Center a true intergenerational program. Today, Pat continues to

Oh My, I Am 105! My good friend and fellow Heath Village resident Howard Lindemann turned 105 on June 23, 2016. Howard epitomizes a life well lived. Married 52 years to Elinor, they moved to Heath Village in 1998 from Syosset, L.I. They were one of the first couples to live in the Orchard (apartment 274). Unfortunately, Howard lost Elinor in 2005 but he is very lucky to have an adoring family that includes his daughter and her husband, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two nieces, one nephew, and two grandnephews. When Howard and Elinor moved to Heath Village they were very active. He always told me that he was grateful that he could continue to do so many of the things he loved even after coming to Heath Village. Activities such as golf, skiing, fly fishing, gardening and hiking. He helped break ground for many of our current nature trails. Howard also loves the craft shop and was very involved with the wood working club. He helped build the train and several other pieces of Friendship Center playground equipment as well as the Heath House Library table and shelves. I was so happy that he was able to participate in the shop’s recent Grand Re-Opening. Howard also loves to ski. He has won ski racing medals and is in the 70+, 80+ and 90+ Ski Club. His last ski trip was to Gray Rocks in Canada with his granddaughter and her family at age 92. Wow! Howard lived at Mayflower for a number of years and is now a resident in the Health Care Center. He is one of the oldest residents ever to have lived at Heath Village. He is also the oldest living graduate of Lafayette College where he studied engineering and was in the 100th Graduation Class of 1932. He also received his MS Degree from Cornell. I love visiting with Howard and listening to his stories about his life’s adventures. He is a truly a remarkable individual and I consider myself incredibly lucky to have met Howard and to call him my friend. When recently asked for one word to describe his experience at Heath Village, Howard replied “ideal.” I couldn’t say it better myself. Happy Birthday Howard! Bloom Where You are Planted Arbor Day 2016 It was a brisk and windy Arbor Day this year but that didn’t stop Heath Village from celebrating this important holiday. Joined by our Friendship Center friends and members of the Administration, we planted a sugar maple (acer saccharum) near the large playground of the Friendship Center. April 29, 2016 marked the 144th anniversary of the first Arbor Day Observance; 42 of which have been celebrated at Heath Village. During the 42 years, over 50 trees have been planted in honor of Arbor Day. Each year, this special day represents an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to making sure that our retired residents, our young children, and, yes, even the 50+ special Arbor Day trees living throughout our 100+ acre campus continue to bloom where they are planted. The Friendship Fund Charitable Gift Annuity Making an annuity gift: You irrevocably transfer money or securities to our Friendship Fund. In exchange, we pay you (and another, or a survivor, if you like) a fixed amount annually for life. In effect, your transfer is doing two things -making a charitable gift and purchasing a fixed income for life. Income tax benefit: You get an income tax charitable deduction in the year you make your gift. If you let us know your date of birth and the amount of your contemplated gift, we can calculate your deduction. How annual payments are taxed: A large portion of each annuity payment received is tax-free. The taxfree amount is fixed at the outset and remains constant for the period of your life expectancy.** The rate of return is attractive and guaranteed for life - without investment worries or responsibility.
