Positive Earth? by Mike McPhail Gulf Coast Austin-Healey Club Hill Country Triumph Club If your British car was built before 1968, it probably is wired for positive earth. That is not some kind of sixties hippie movement, but rather the practice of connecting the plus terminal of the car’s battery to the chassis as common ground. It was once thought by the English that there was a scientific advantage to using this arrangement in automotive DC electrical wiring. By the time automobile generators were replaced by alternators, carmakers all over the world were connecting the minus battery terminal to the car’s body making negative the ground for the electrical system. I am sure this was done just to make Joe Lucas look bad! Remember when warning labels were actually useful?

(Positive Ground continued) All this ground (a.k.a. earth) business goes back to the way the wiring in your house works. Even though it is alternating current, one side of the dynamo at the power station is actually connected to a metal rod buried in the dirt. That is why you can electrocute yourself by getting across a hot wire and a conductor that is touching the ground beneath your feet! The telephone company does the same thing, and you can check for the hot side of a telephone line by connecting your phone from a ground source to one side of the line and listening for dial tone. No, I don’t know why anyone would want to do this. The reason for bringing up all this fascinating stuff is that often times we would like to add a modern sound system, or other such electrical gadget to our favorite ride, and all that new stuff requires negative ground. On a really old car, just about all you have to do is swap the cables on the battery to change from positive to negative ground. Most electrical devices found on early British vehicles are not polarity sensitive. The gas gauge, fuel gauge, generator, voltage regulator, fuel pump, wiper motor, heater motor, turn signal flasher, lights and starter will all function normally regardless of the polarity. The coil will still work, but does in fact have the preferred polarity marked on the terminals. Newer models will be marked plus and minus, while older ones will have “SW” and “CB” instead. The “SW” refers to the ignition switch and “CB” is for the distributor contact breaker, i.e. points. With the original arrangement, the ignition switch would be supplying negative battery and the contact breaker would be connected to positive earth. (see Positive Ground next page)

The Journal of Loose Nuts and Broken Spokes GSBCC’s NEWSLETTER

August 2016

(Positive Ground continued) Therefore, when converting to negative ground, reverse the wires on the coil so that negative (the black and white wire from the distributor to the coil) is now on the “SW” or “”,and positive (white wire from the ignition switch) is now connected to “CB” or “+“. There is also an urban legend about the need to “polarize your generator” when converting to negative ground. I follow the repair manual instructions when I do the swap, but am somewhat skeptical as to the need for it! Electric tachometers were introduced on some vehicles before the change to negative earth, but can be modified to work that way. Just Google it! Of course, the amp meter will read backwards, but just reverse the wires and presto, change-o! Newer electric fuel pumps are also polarity sensitive, and will have to be replaced with the correct model. Modern solid state flasher units have to be negative ground also, and won’t work in a positive ground car. Those wonderful Pertronix Ignitor electronic ignition modules can be ordered either positive or negative, but the positive earth version is often more expensive and the wiring is not as straight forward. Some electric radiator fans that push or pull depending on polarity must be wired for negative ground, because running the “wrong” direction will ruin the bearings. These things suck so much juice, that you will probably need an alternator (always negative ground) to keep it from burning up the generator or running the battery down.

Monthly Meeting Minutes by Bill Unger, Secretary The regularly scheduled GSBCC monthly meeting was held on Aug. 9, 2016, at The Boathouse Waterway Bar & Grill (originally scheduled for Sticky Fingers but we got dissed by them). President Rod Smith and Vice President Greg Hoch were unable to attend. Twenty one members (four additional came later after finishing their meals at Sticky Fingers) and guests Norman Yeo and grandson were present (Norman later signed up as our newest member). Secretary Bill Unger called the meeting to order at 6:40 pm. Secretary’s Review of Last Meeting’s Minutes: Bill Unger reviewed the minutes from the July meeting printed in the GSBCC monthly newsletter. There being no corrections, the minutes stand as recorded. President’s Report: As read by Secretary Bill Unger, President Rod Smith encourages all GSBCC members to pre-register their autos in our club’s signature event Britfest 2016 scheduled for Oct. 1. A registration form is attached to the monthly newsletter as well as available on the club’s internet website. As of Aug. 8, 15 pre-registrations have been received. You might be surprised that just by showing up, you may be rewarded a First Place trophy in your class! We may need to make phone calls to GSBCC members to get them to register. And we may need to contact other clubs and see what participation might be. Treasurer’s Report: Jim Smith reports a checking balance of $3854 with about $300 in new deposits to be made. Jim calculates that about $1500 will be spent on Britfest trophies and about $700 on T-shirts. (see Meeting Minutes next page)

(Meeting Minutes continued) Jim conducted a playing card draw to award $20 gift certificates, one each to Billy Morris and Pat Batson. Britfest: Event Chairman Rod Smith made our presentation to the Myrtle Beach Special Events Committee and got approval. Next step is for it to be presented to the full Council. As in the past, once the committee approves, it is pretty much a rubber stamp. They are asking for some IRS verification of 501(c)(3) status which Rod. Jim Smith has scanned and emailed it to the committee. Rod Smith reports that Rich Kaplan of Canine Angels Service Dogs has confirmed that he will be at Britfest with some of his dogs. Rod Smith reports that there may be a Wine Festival the same day as Britfest. It was on the minutes Rod saw from the City of Myrtle Beach's prior meeting. If it is approved, it will be at Valor Park in the Market Commons. Stancy Bender reports that there are now 17 commitments for raffle baskets. She would like at least three more commitments to make a total of 20. Rod & Myrna have a raffle gift ready - another set of British boxes! Please bring your baskets to the September meeting for Stancy to finish the wrapping. Social Media Editor’s Report: Felicia Sachs reports that we need pictures of everyone's car who is not already shown on our website’s Gallery. Please email her a clear JPEG or other photo to [email protected]. Also, as a result of this evenings meeting location fiasco, Felicia will establish a Twitter account so that last minute changes can be broadcast immediately. Events Chairman’s Report: Bob Puttbach was not present. However, Skip Robertson

reports that the Sep. 18 drive to Lake Waccamaw is still planned. (See Club Sponsored Events calendar in this newsletter for additional details.) Also, Felicia Sachs is organizing a met-up at La Belle Amie Vineyard on Aug. 20 for their Summer Breeze Music Festival (http://labelleamie.com/august-20/). Plan on being there at 10:00 am to park in a specially designated parking are for British cars.
