There are sunbeds and sunshades around both the pool areas and changing rooms and toilets located near the pools. Rancho C is part of the renowned Miraflores complex which includes golf and other sports facilities as well as restaurants and supermarkets. Situated 12 kms east of Marbella/Puerto Banus and only 30 minutes drive from Malaga airport which is itself just over 21⁄2 hours flight from most UK airports. There are many other beaches, restaurants, bars, local markets and shops only a 5 minute drive away. Several well known golf courses are within easy reach together with the new racecourse which is a 10 minute drive away.

As well as the beaches, the apartment is an ideal base for visiting the more traditional parts of Andalucia including Ronda, Mijas and further afield Seville, Granada and Cordoba are approximately 2 hours drive away. Locally, taxis are available nearby to get to Marbella or Fuengirola in about 15 minutes. The apartment has an allocated underground car park space with lifts to all floors for ease of access. Both the car park and the gardens have the benefit of security gates and the Miraflores complex itself has 24 hour security patrols.

3

Directions from Malaga Airport Please note that to confuse matters the N340 has been redesignated the A7 and the motorway formerly known as the A7 is now the AP7. However, not all of the signs have been changed as yet!! So where we have said N340 you may need to look out for A7 as well.

To get to the apartment from the Airport (or Holiday Car Hire office at the Airport) proceed as follows:Leave Malaga Airport Terminal taking the road marked N340/E15 motorway which will be marked Malaga/Cadiz at the first roundabout. This roundabout is near to the San Miguel Brewery opposite the Car Hire depots including Holiday Car Hire. Shortly after this roundabout (500 metres) take the slip road on the right marked N340 Torremolinos/Cadiz (do not go straight on to Malaga). After some 3 kms there is another slip road on the right which you should take signed E15/A7/N340 Torremolinos/Benalmadena/Algeciras. Carry on this road and go past Benalmadena – you will see the cable cars at Benalmadena. Drive for another 5 minutes (about 16km from the airport) until the Motorway splits. Keep in the right hand lane heading towards Fuengirola/Algeciras on the N340 Costa. Follow this road passing Fuengirola on your way. You will have now traveled some 20km. After Fuengirola you will pass El Castillo (the Castle) on your left (25km) and you will go past El Faro (the lighthouse) on your right (26km). After a few minutes and having gone round two dangerous bends you will then pass the exit for La Cala de Mijas (30km). Now you need to concentrate!!

In quick succession you will see signs on the right hand side for Jardin Botanico, Unicasa, Torrenueva, Jazmin Miraflores and when you see the Miraflores sign turn off the main road into the service road (see Miraflores map). If you miss this turn do not panic(!) take the next immediate exit which is signed Riviera del Sol and you will find yourself one roundabout further down the service road. TIP: The exits on the N340(A7) have mile markers showing the distance from Cadiz. The Miraflores turnoff is KM 198. [Note: when returning from the Marbella direction the turning off is signposted “Riviera”] The map, on page 6, of Miraflores shows how you get to Rancho Miraflores C. Basically you will follow the service road which runs parallel to the N340 until you get to the last roundabout before entering Jazmin Miraflores which is currently under construction. Turn left up the hill following the signs for Rancho C and continue up the hill straightover several mini-roundabouts until the road goes over the brow of the hill and descends to a "T" junction where you turn right. 5

Playa / beach

Miraflores

As you approach Rancho C you will see a road on the right hand side called Calle Margarita. The entrance to the underground car park is just into this road on the left hand side (after the bins!). Use the remote control to enter the car park, (you do not need to close the doors as they close automatically), switch on your lights and turn immediately right into the car park which will be under Block 4. Look for space 26 on the right hand side and park. (Do not be confused, each block has car park spaces with the same numbers!). Use the lift to take your luggage to the 2nd Floor. Apartment 2H is on the right on leaving the lift.

Local beach

A word of advice regarding the N340. This road is a dual carriageway and the traffic moves quite quickly, the turn offs come at you quicker than at home especially if you are not used to the road. It sounds silly but you need to think which direction you want to go in when entering the road, not all junctions allow you to go east and west or change direction. You will need to look out for those junctions which allow a change of direction. This sounds complicated but you will soon get the hang of it!! 6

Local Amenities Beaches The closest beach is Torrenueva Beach which is between 5 and 10 minutes walk downhill from Rancho C. This is a nice beach but the facilities are a bit basic compared to the other local beaches but if you just want to walk down to a beach this is ideal. There are sunbeds, loungers and sun shades for hire and 2 beach bars serving food. To reach this beach from the main pool, walk down the steps in front of Block 3 and exit through the security gate. (If you do not have a key with you there is a button on the left hand side on the wall which you can press and that opens the gates). Please make sure that the gate is closed after you. A rough footpath ahead takes you across scrub and onto the road. Keep going downhill passing Racquets restaurant as well as other restaurants and a bar. Pass the supermarket and use the underpass to get under the road to the beach. There is a larger and more attractive beach at Cabopino. To reach this beach drive towards Marbella and after 2 or 3 exits you will see signs for Puerto Cabopino. At the top of the exit there is a roundabout and you will need to follow signs Puerto Cabopino but do not park in the harbour as this will cost you 5 Euros and there are hardly ever any spaces. As you come off the roundabout and start to descend you will see signs for Cabopino Beach Parking/Andys beach restaurant. Here you will find a nice spot under a tree (if you are lucky) and an old man will look after your car for a couple of Euros. You can then walk down to the beach and there are bars and restaurants

along the beach. If you want to get to the Harbour which we recommend (see Restaurants later) just walk along the beach and walk through the snack bar at the end and you will find yourself in the harbour. We think that the beach at La Cala is one of the nicest local beaches and is 5 minutes drive away and has the advantage of being close to the town. Take the N340(A7) towards Malaga and after only a few minutes you will see a slip road for a large BP garage on the right hand side. The turnoff after this signed Cala de Mijas takes you into town where you will see a very pleasant tree lined avenue (large supermarket on your left hand side – see later). Carry on through the town and being careful not to get back on the N340(A7) again, the road bends round towards the beach. You can normally park here. If there are no spaces here then the main square in the town usually has some spaces (near to the supermarket). The beach is well provided for with sunbeds etc. and a very friendly beach bar/restaurant called Arroyo which we have used and recommend but there are several others to choose from as well. This is only a guideline as there are beaches along the whole of the Costa del Sol (!) and we have not had a chance to try them all yet!! We would be really happy to know of any other beaches that you find that are worthy of a visit. There are obviously also attractive beaches in Fuengirola, Marbella and Puerto Banus but these can be busy and parking might be a problem. 7

Restaurants We have made sterling efforts to try all of the restaurants within 10 miles of Miraflores! These notes cover just a few of the restaurants that we like. Please let us know if there are any that you found worthy of a mention. Miraflores Restaurants Monica de Sardinia (Tel: 952 58 76 21) is an Italian restaurant and very good although fairly quiet and not cheap (this may be the reason!).

The best restaurant on Miraflores is in the Clubhouse (Tel: 95 293 01 02) (follow signs for Reception on the Miraflores Estate). You will need to book especially on the nights that entertainment is provided and on those nights they often provide an excellent buffet. In reception there is a noticeboard showing the entertainment that is provided 2 or 3 times a week. Normally this would be a Flamenco evening, singer/comedian etc. Venta de Golf (Tel: 952 934 450) is a Spanish run restaurant next to the supermarket on Miraflores (see map). We would advise arriving early as the restaurant is very popular and gets busy and the service gets slower! but it is very good and reasonably priced. Next door to Venta de Golf is a Pizza and Pasta restaurant which is very good. Miraflores Golf Club (Tel: 952 931 941) also has a very good restaurant looking out over the Golf Course and we have heard good reports. Restaurants that you pass on the way down to the local beach from the apartment include: Racquets (Tel: 952 49 21 51) which is really English pub style food but very good value and sometimes they have a quiz night there which is good fun.

Other Restaurants In La Cala de Mijas we would recommend the Restaurant Mijas Playa (Tel: 952 493 749) which is close to the beach walking past the Arroyo snack bar away from the centre of town. There is a nice garden terrace which is very pleasant when the sun goes down. Also in La Cala is El Porton which is in a road called Calle Torremolinos (952 492 096) and is also excellent. Cabopino has several restaurants around the Harbour but we would recommend Alberts which is English run and has excellent food and the interior of the restaurant has to be seen to be believed. We think this restaurant has a much better atmosphere in the evening. Guiseppi’s Restaurant is next door but one to Alberts in Cabopino and has very good Italian food. At the Cabopino roundabout there is an excellent Italian restaurant called Bruno’s.

8

Other Restaurants continued In Marbella there are hundreds of restaurants but the few that we have tried that we would recommend are in the Old Town around Orange Square. La Pesquera is one we have tried several times and is very good. Its not actually in Orange Square but is just around the corner in Plaza de la Victoria near one of the underground car parks. It is a lovely area to walk around especially in the evening so if you take a stroll you should find it (warning: there are several shoe shops in the back streets so gentlemen you can be taken shopping unawares!). Puerto Banus obviously has lots of restaurants and bars around the Marina which are all very lively after dark. This is a great area to walk around and people watch. Most of the restaurants and bars are centred around the Marina. One of our favourites is Azul Marino (Tel: 952 811 044) which is really a fish restaurant although they do have other things. The fish is superb and it is a great place to sit and watch the world go by with a glass of something cool!

Picasso Pizzeria and Creperia restaurant is also excellent. Near to Azul Marino. There are so many. Please let us know if you feel you can recommend any others. For a really special evening out we would highly recommend Restaurant Valparaiso (Tel: 952 485 996) which is in a lovely setting on the road from Fuengirola to the hilltop town of Mijas. It is on the left hand side of the road about half way up to Mijas. Booking is essential and certainly worth a visit.

Supermarkets On the Miraflores complex there is a good supermarket which can supply most basic things that you will need for a holiday, near to the Venta de Golf restaurant (see map). This is open from 9am to 9pm. There is another larger supermarket by the entrance to Riviera del Sol in Avenida del Sol (see map) which is open 24/7.

If you want a wider range of food try the one in the square in La Cala or bigger still there is an Alcampo supermarket in La Canada shopping mall which is near Marbella. (For directions see Shopping). 9

Shopping/Markets Shops are plentiful both in Marbella and Malaga. The big departmental store is called El Corte Ingles in Puerto Banus and is a great place to walk around and pass a few hours. It has its own multi storey car park. Take the N340(A7) to Marbella and turn off at Puerto Banus. You will see the store from the road and the parking is underground. There is a large shopping mall called La Canada which has many English and Spanish shops and a food court. There is a huge supermarket which has a vast variety of local food. For the seriously sad (or bored) there are DIY stores and a garden centre. To get there follow the N340(A7) towards Marbella, go past Santa Clara and Costa del Sol Hospital and Torre Real. You will then see exit 182 km marked Ojen/Marbella/Parque Comercial. Take this slip road and you will see La Canada on the right hand side. Puerto Banus has many exclusive and expensive shops such as Versace and Georgio Armani although there are some less expensive ones around the back streets rather than around the Marina. If shopping is your pleasure then you will not be disappointed.

There is a huge market (also selling antiques) in Puerto Banus on a Saturday morning. This becomes extremely busy and the traffic is horrific. We found it is better to park in the El Corte Ingles car park and then walk across the road and up the hill to the bullring rather than try to park up at the market. This market is terraced so make sure you have comfortable walking shoes and take water with you (although there are lots of places to have coffee and eat and drink). On a Wednesday and Friday there is a market at Urbanisation Calpyso which is just along the N340(A7) from Miraflores going towards Marbella. Takes 2 minutes in the car, look for the red Cepsa petrol station at the next turnoff from Miraflores going towards Marbella (this is where Sunshine Property Care - SPC have their offices). This is a smaller market but interesting and busy. On a Saturday there is a market in La Cala which is the same market as at Calypso. In fact it would probably be easier to park there rather than at Calypso but your choice. There is a huge market in Fuengirola on a Tuesday and a market in Torremolinos on a Thursday.

Car Hire Holiday Car Hire Malaga Airport - Tel: 95 224 26 85 We have used this company several times and have always found them quite good. They will pick you up at the Airport take you to the depot and you drop your car back to the depot on your departure and they take you into the Airport. They also have branches in Calahonda (Tel: 95 293 24 43) and La Cala (Tel: 95 259 90 99) so if anything goes wrong with the car you can call in there.

Another car hire firm we have heard about via the Carjet website ([email protected]) is Record Rentacar who operate from Malaga Airport. On arrival leave the baggage hall by the sloping ramp down into the rentacar floor underneath the baggage belts. Look for the Record Rentacar desk. Please let us know if you use any other car hire firm and you feel that you would like to recommend them.

Golf Local Golf courses are:Miraflores Golf Course Tel: 952 93 19 60 Mijas Golf on the Coin Road, Mijas Costa – Tel: 952 47 68 43 www.mijasgolf.org La Cala Golf Resort, La Cala – No details at present Cabopino Golf – Tel: 952 85 02 82 Santa Maria, Marbella Tel: 952 83 10 36 Green Life Golf, Elviria Hills Tel: 952 839 142 Santa Clara Golf Course Tel: 952 850 111 The above Golf Courses are all within 5 minutes drive from the Apartment.

We know nothing about Golf but:Miraflores has a golf course and a golf school with Golf Academy and Driving Range (Tel: 952 932 876) – 2 minutes drive from the Apartment. We understand that the best local golf courses are Mijas Golf and La Cala Golf. You will need to book in advance especially in March when the golf courses become busy. In the apartment is a copy of Costa de Sol Golf News for June/July 2003 which shows all of the 34 golf courses on the Costa del Sol from Malaga to Gibraltar.

Places to Visit Marbella Old Town

Ronda

Take the N340(A7) towards Marbella and turn off at junction 184 signed Marbella Centro. This is the main road that runs through the centre of Marbella, the N340(A7) actually bypasses Marbella and takes you to Puerto Banus. If this happens then when you reach Puerto Banus turn around and take the Marbella road from there. When you reach the centre of town you will see a large tree lined square on your left hand side. Most of the town centre car parks are in roads on the right hand side near this square. Park in any of them (they are quite reasonably priced) even though the Spanish seem to think most cars can fit in a space half the size of the car! Follow signs to the Old Town or ask a native and you will see maps on the walls showing directions to Orange Square (Plaza de los Naranjos) and stroll at your leisure.

Beautiful old city – one of Spain’s oldest - with a spectacular setting and fantastic views from the legendary bridge over the ravine. This makes a good day trip from the coast. To get there drive on the N340 past Marbella and when you get to San Pedro there will be signs to Ronda. The road is a winding road with great views all the way. Not recommended for vertigo sufferers!

Istan A shorter run into the mountains from Marbella. When you reach the town of Istan you can walk to a viewpoint that looks back over the valley and the lakes. All the way up the hill you have views back over the coast.

Malaga Great for shopping! Very picturesque city with harbour, gardens, tree lined avenues and castle overlooking the city. Word of warning do not use the horse drawn carriages – very, very expensive and the price they quote you at the beginning of your journey is just an estimate! If you want to go up to the castle to see the view (well worth it) then take a cab – apparently only 7 Euros!! You can also take the City tour bus which covers all the sites.

Mijas Lovely whitewashed hilltop town set high above Fuengirola. To get there take the N340(A7) towards Malaga and the turnoff to Mijas will be marked as you are driving past Fuengirola. This is a great place to sit and admire the views all around you. In the evening when the tourists go home it has an entirely different character and is a lovely place to go for an evening meal.

12

Places to Visit continued Ojen

Selwo Safari Park

Another whitewashed hilltop town within easy distance from Marbella. We have not used it but there is a Country Club with swimming pool and gardens and restaurant near to the village. Take the Coin road from Marbella signed Ojen. Only a short distance from Ojen is another pretty village called Monda. There is a Country Club here just outside of Monda near to the Castillo that we have tried called Marbella Gun and Country Club which is British run. It has a pool and gardens and spectacular views over the Sierra de las Nieves mountains. It has a good restaurant although we only went there for Sunday lunch.

This is a very authentic African safari park which does involve some walking so take comfortable shoes and plenty of water. Part of the safari is by jeeps through the wild animal enclosures which are interesting. This is located near to San Pedro. There are brochures for these and other places in the apartment. If you do visit other places please leave a leaflet in the apartment for others to use or let us know if there are any other places that you have enjoyed.

Sport and Other Activities Sports Facilities – Tennis, bowls, water sports and other sports can be arranged at the Miraflores Reception. Horse Racing - There is a race course near La Cala. Follow signs from the end of La Cala main street or from Fuengirola. Racing takes place on Saturday or Sunday evenings but very late to avoid the heat of the day normally 10.30pm onwards finishing after 3am!! There are restaurants on the course where you can get a meal before the racing starts. Posters in the streets will tell you when the meetings are.

Football – Malaga has a team in the Spanish Premiership and if you want to see Mr Beckham play for Real Madrid let us know as we have a contact who can get tickets and arrange transport for some games. Matches usually take place on Sunday evenings. Bullfights - For the seriously bloodthirsty there are bullfights at Puerto Banus and Mijas most Sunday evenings. These are advertised on street billboards.

13

Instructions for Equipment in Apartment There are instruction booklets in the bottom drawer in the kitchen for all the appliances although not all are in English. Washing Machine

Dishwasher

The washing machine is very straightforward. Load machine. Pull out drawer on left hand side of machine. Put powder in left hand compartment. Softener (if used) in middle compartment. Close door. Make sure the knob is turned to STOP (lower right hand side). Turn knob clockwise until 60o, 50o or 40o is reached (at top). (We find that most things can be done at 50o or 40o). Press button on left hand side of machine marked to switch on. (Ignore other two buttons). Takes approximately 30-45 minutes. When finished press same button to turn off. Open door.

Again very basic and simple. Open door. Dishwasher tablet goes in the right hand container. Rinse aid in the left hand one. Close them up. Load the machine. Close Door. Use the programme that will probably already be on but it is the middle symbol of the three symbols to the right of the STOP mark. (do not use any of the others as not sure what they will do!!. Press start button on the left hand side of the machine marked Takes approx 45mins. Open door and unload Hob and Oven both are simple and basic and self explanatory. The ceramic hob will continue to glow to show they are still hot after having been turned off. Hot water system This comes on automatically when the electricity is on. There is a green light underneath which lights up when the water is heating.

15

Instructions for Equipment in Apartment continued Fuse Box The fuse box is located just inside the front door on the wall on the right hand side. Spanish electricity supplies can be unpredictable. If for any reason the fuse trips then just open the fuse box and reset the switch so that they are all in the upper position. In the unlikely event of a power cut there are 2 torches in the kitchen drawer and 1 in the wardrobe in the guest bedroom. Good idea to check where they are in daylight!!

General Please ensure that the patio doors (both onto the balcony and in the main bedroom) are closed and locked when you leave the apartment at any time. Be careful not to shut the patio doors when you are out on the balcony as you may be there for some time as you cannot open them from outside! Please double lock the front doors and lower the shutters when you go out at any time. For your security and peace of mind we would suggest that you double lock the front door when you are in the apartment also. It is probably best then to leave the keys in the door in case of an emergency. Please ensure that you have your keys before closing the front door as otherwise you will be locked out! Please note that the electric sockets are not as robust as those at home so please take care when removing plugs from the wall sockets and hold the wall socket at the same time as removing the plug.

Air-Conditioning The remote control in the lounge controls the sensor on the lounge wall. The left hand button at the top switches the air-conditioning on or off and the button next to it sets the temperature. Please do not run the air-conditioning with any of the windows or doors open and switch this off when you go out. Television – Works as normal from a remote control. Sometimes the service is interrupted briefly because of problems with the communal satellite dish especially during stormy weather. Some viewer discretion is required especially on the foreign channels as even during the day the content can be inappropriate if you have children around.

16

Rules of the House and the Complex We have tried to make as few rules as possible. Please remember that this is a residential area and some people live and work here all the time so please have respect for their peace and quiet after 11pm. Rules of the Apartment:No smoking in the apartment at any time. If you need to smoke please use the walkway or the balcony with the door closed and please dispose of your cigarette ends thoughtfully and safely. Please try if possible to remove high heel shoes before entering the apartment so as not to cause damage to the marble floors. Also it tends to be very noisy for the neighbours! Please do not run the air-conditioning system with any doors or windows open.

Take care on the marble floors especially if your feet are wet. Please take all rubbish daily to the communal bins located next to the car park entrance. Please advise us of any breakages or if any of the equipment, lighting etc. does not work. Please do not lose the keys. We will have to charge for replacement keys, the garage sensor key alone costs 30 Euros.

Community Rules:-

Strictly no pets allowed either in the apartments or around the complex. We know there are a couple of dogs around but we believe these are kept on a lead and are not allowed around the pool area. Also there is a parrot or mynah bird around in Block 5 which sometimes has a conversation to itself and wolf whistles!! There is no skinny dipping allowed!!! There is a lifeguard on the top pool who is around from 11am to 7pm (June to September only) we believe 7 days per week. You are responsible for your own safety and supervision of your children at all times.

Please note the swimming pool safety rules which are located around the pool. They are there for your safety and information. Please take time to read them. Sunbeds cannot be reserved. They are provided on a first come, first served basis and cannot be removed from the pool areas. Please do not hang washing or towels over the balcony railing – use the clothes dryer provided in the apartment.
