EUROPEAN UNION PRIZE FOR CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE MIES VAN DER ROHE AWARD 2015 The Mies van der Rohe Award is Europe’s most prestigious architectural accolade. The prize crowns high-caliber architecture of cultural significance and commends outstanding projects destined to promote modern urban development. Since its inception in 1988 the prize-money of € 60,000 has been awarded to such famous names as David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid, Peter Zumthor or Rem Koolhaas. To promote young talent and architects at the outset of their careers the Emerging Architect Award was called into life, promoting ambitious, up-and-coming architecture. The principal objectives of the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award are to recognise and commend excellence in the field of architecture and to draw attention to the important contribution of European professionals in the development of new ideas and technologies. The Prize as well as the Emerging Architect Award are awarded biennially to works completed within the previous two years, produced in countries covered by the Culture programme of the European Union. In this way, the Prize offers both individuals and public institutions an opportunity to reach a clearer understanding of the cultural role of architecture in the construction of our cities. Furthermore, the Prize sets out to foster architecture in two signifcant ways: by stimulating greater circulation of professional architects throughout the entire European Union and by supporting young architects as they set off on their careers. Candidates for the Prize are put forward by a broad group of independent experts from all over Europe, associations that form part of the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) and other European national architects’ associations, as well as the Advisory Committee members. Five finalists were selected from the 420 projects nominated at 279 locations in Europe in 2015 — the eminent international jury, chaired by Cino Zucchi, was ultimately most convinced by the Philharmonic Hall Szczecin, Poland, by the architects Fabrizio Barozzi and Alberto Veiga. The coveted Emerging Architect Award was awarded to ARQUITECTURA-G for the Casa Luz project in Cilleros, Spain. The other finalists are: Ravensburg Art Museum, Ravensburg DE, arch.: Lederer Ragnarsdóttir Oei / Danish Maritime Museum, Helsingør DK, arch.: BIG — Bjarke Ingels Group / Antinori Winery, Bargino IT, arch.: Archea Associati / Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, London UK, arch.: O’Donnell + Tuomey The design of the exhibition has changed for the first time since the instigation of the Mies van der Rohe Award to include many new features, such as models, videos and original drawings.

WINNER PHILHARMONIC HALL SZCZECIN

Szczecin/ Polen, 2014 Barozzi / Veiga, Fabrizio Barozzi (IT) und Alberto Veiga (ES) The building houses a symphony hall for 1000 spectators, a hall for chamber music for 200 spectators, a multifunctional space for exhibitions and conferences, and a wide foyer. In its materiality, the building is perceived as a light element: the glass facade, illuminated from inside, allows different perceptions. The exterior austerity and the simple composition of the interior circulation spaces contrast with the expressiveness of the main hall and the concert hall with its gold-leaf covering.

EMERGING ARCHITECT WINNER: LUZ HOUSE

Cilleros/Spain, 2013 ARQUITECTURA-G, Jonathan Arnabat, Jordi Ayala-Bril, Aitor Fuentes, Igor Urdampilleta Luz, the owner, wanted a house with lots of natural light and related to the outdoors and the yard. In its original condition the central area of the house lacked natural light and ventilation. These factors, together with a extremely low budget, led to a strategy of simplifying and purifying the design of the project; cleaning and emptying the interior of the existing house, leavingthe stone façades and rammed-earth party walls while arranging the new house around an interior courtyard. This time, our approach comes from the use of the local know-how and reliability of natural materials adapted to the economical and geographical context. FINALISTS 2015

HISTORY OF THE PRIZE

The idea for a prize for European architecture was proposed to the European Parliament by MP Xavier Rubert de Ventós. On April 28, 1987 an agreement was signed between European Commissioner Carlo Ripa di Meana and Barcelona Mayor Pasqual Maragall to launch the ‘Mies van der Rohe Award of the European Communities’, and the first edition was carried out in 1988. In 2000 the Fundació Mies van der Rohe submitted the model of the Mies van der Rohe Award in response to the call for proposals by the European Commission for the ‘European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture’. In this new phase, the Emerging Architect Special Mention, which recognises gifted young professionals, was added. Upon acceptance, the Mies van der Rohe Award became the official architecture prize of the EU and since then, eight editions have been carried out (in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015). The Prize consists of a cash prize of 60,000€, while the Special Mention is endowed with 20,000€. Along with the cash prizes, the winners are also awarded a sculpture designed by the Catalan artist Xavier Corberó inspired by the columns of the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, symbol of the Prize and one of the 20th century’s major architectural works. The basic objectives and organisational procedures that were established in 1987 have remained the same. From the beginning, the Prize has been a collective project that benefits from the collaboration of the Steering and Advisory Committees, the ACE member architects’ associations and the other national architects’ associations, the independent experts, jury members and the architects whose works are proposed every two years. Also, the Prize emphasises what European architecture has to offer to the rest of the world. The works proposed are not limited by scale or programme. The selection of the Jury for each edition has included private houses, public housing, museums and cultural installations, sports facilities and large-scale urban and infrastructure projects with the common denominator being the contribution that these works make to the construction of the city. FUNDACIÓ MIES VAN DER ROHE, BARCELONA

The Fundació Mies van der Rohe was set up in 1983 by the Barcelona City Hall with the initial purpose of reconstructing the German Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (18861969) for the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. Besides conserving and disseminating knowledge about the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion, the Fundació today also fosters debate on and awareness of themes related to contemporary architecture and urban planning, as well as encouraging studies on the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and on the Modern Movement. In accordance with these objectives, the Fundació organises awards, congresses, conferences, exhibitions, workshops and installations.
