Universal/Standard Precautions Universal/Standard Precautions are a set of infection control practices that healthcare personnel use to reduce transmission of microorganisms in healthcare settings.
Hand Hygiene Hand hygiene has been frequently cited as the single most important practice to help reduce the transmission of infectious agents in the healthcare setting. It is an essential element of Standard Precautions that includes both handwashing with plain or antiseptic-containing soap and water, and use of alcoholbased products (gels, rinses and foams) that do not require use of water.
Instant Hand Sanitizers In addition to traditional hand washing with soap and water, the CDC recommends the use of alcohol-based hand rubs by healthcare personnel because they address some of the obstacles that healthcare professionals face during patient care.

Personal Protective Equipment Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to a variety of barriers and respirators used alone or in combination to protect mucous membranes, airways, skin and clothing from contact with infectious agents.
Gloves Gloves reduce hand contamination 70-80 percent, preventing cross-contamination and protecting patients and healthcare personnel from infection. Gloves should be changed before and after each patient. It’s important to note that the use of gloves does not eliminate the need for hand hygiene. Both techniques should be used together to be most effective.

Universal/Standard Precautions Cont’d
Respirators The CDC currently recommends N95 or higher level respirators for personnel exposed to patients with suspected or confirmed tuberculosis as well as other diseases that could be transmitted through the airborne route, including SARS and smallpox. Respirators are also currently recommended to be worn during the performance of aerosolgenerating procedures (e.g. intubation, bronchoscopy and suctioning).

Surgical Site Infection Prevention Many factors contribute and increase patient risk in acquiring a post-surgical infection. Emerging challenges which contribute to surgical site infections include lack of standard protocols for post-discharge surveillance, resistant organisms which decrease the effectiveness of antimicrobial prophylaxis, improper skin/surgical site preparation, improper intraoperative temperature regulation, lack of blood glucose monitoring and pre-existing microorganism colonization. Pre-Operative Studies have suggested that screening patients for S aureus by nasal swab cultures preoperatively, and decolonizing with mupirocin ointment to the nares 2x daily and chlorhexidine baths once daily for 5 days before surgery, reduces the risk of S aureus SSIs in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery.
