Indoor & Outdoor Furniture EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

INDOOR & OUTDOOR FURNITURE Supplier capability in the Philippines, Vietnam & Indonesia

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Southeast Asia is one of the key production hubs of wooden furniture, with experienced manufacturers spread across Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines. In fact, these countries are among the major furniture makers in the world, with Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand among the top 10 exporters to the US. Pieces made in Southeast Asia are known for their intricate handwoven and handcarved patterns, and innovative designs that reflect the region’s diverse culture. Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines share several material and design characteristics, but are also known for their individual strengths. The Philippines is recognized as one of the frontrunners in terms of furniture design, while Vietnam has gained a reputation for the quality craftsmanship and service of its suppliers. Indonesia makers are known for their garden and wooden furniture. Aside from the design and material innovations, the reasonable prices, the abundant supply of raw materials and the low minimum order requirements have helped Southeast Asia’s furniture industry to experience substantial growth in recent years. In 2007, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines shipped $1.96 billion worth of wooden furniture, an increase of 33 percent over the previous year. The following are some of the key trends we see in the region’s indoor and outdoor furniture industry: • Exports in the line are anticipated to increase marginally in early to mid 2009, with the economic downturn expected to reduce demand for furniture. Some suppliers, however, are still optimistic of achieving sales revenue growth. The global housing slowdown has also prompted many companies to focus on the domestic market, including the hospitality and tourism industry. • Suppliers will target new export

markets as they cut down their reliance on US sales. Emerging economies in Europe and Asia will be the focus of many companies. • Many suppliers will keep product prices the same as raw material costs drop due to weakening international demand. • A number of companies will continue to address the growing demand for sustainable forest use by sourcing wood from FSC-certified or government and commercial plantations. Makers are also experimenting with new materials to differentiate themselves from competitors. For example, shells, cornhusks, leaves, vines and coconut husks are combined with metal, resin and wood. • The influx of foreign investment will continue as companies transfer some or all of their production to Southeast Asia. These makers are capitalizing on the abundant supply of raw materials and the lower labor cost in the region. This report covers all types of indoor and outdoor wooden furniture produced in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, including chairs, tables, cabinets, beds, consoles and furniture sets. The Industry Overview discusses key issues affecting exporters and elaborates on the composition of the industry, highlighting key characteristics of different types of suppliers. The Products & Prices section in this report details the features and price ranges of furniture offered by suppliers in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. It discusses the latest trends in style, materials and finish. Indonesia’s furniture makers are based in Bali, Yogyakarta and Java, while Vietnam companies can be found in Ho Chi Minh, and in the provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai. In the Philippines, suppliers are concentrated in Cebu, Pampanga and Metro Manila.

OBJECTIVE & METHODOLOGY This Philippines, Vietnam & Indonesia Sourcing Report is a consolidation of three reports published separately in 2008. It is part of a series designed to provide buyers with information on new products from export manufacturers in supply markets that specialize in handcrafted merchandise. The Developing Country Sourcing Report series is part of Global Sources’ corporate social responsibility initiatives. It is offered in conjunction with the Kearny Alliance, whose mission is Aid Through Trade. The objective is to help create jobs in developing Asia through export promotion. To produce this report, larger, midsized and emerging manufacturers were surveyed. The selection of suppliers is designed to reflect the composition of the industry in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines in terms of geographic location, materials used and products offered. For in-depth profiles, our researchers visited the facilities of each company and interviewed senior executives who discussed their recent performance and provided forecasts for the next 12 months. All other companies in this report were either visited or contacted by phone. In each case, companies were required to answer specific questions designed to verify their manufacturing and export credentials. Suppliers also participated in a survey designed to provide insight into their country’s respective industries. www.ChinaSourcingReports.com 3

Indoor & Outdoor Furniture INDUSTRY OVERVIEW

INDUSTRY OVERVIEW Southeast Asia is one of the major sourcing centers for furniture. Some of the key export countries in the region are Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. In 2007, the first three countries shipped $1.96 billion worth of wooden furniture, an increase of 33 percent over the previous year. Furniture made in Southeast Asia has gained a reputation for having good craftsmanship and intricate designs. The region’s long tradition of weaving and woodcarving has enabled suppliers to offer unique furniture in traditional or contemporary styles. Aside from craftsmanship, other factors that have enabled Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines to be among the key exporters of wooden furniture are their low minimum order requirements, a large pool of highly skilled workers, acceptance of mixed orders, and abundant supply of raw materials. In addition, the growing demand for one-of-a-kind and reasonably priced furniture has given the sector a boost, enabling suppliers to capture orders from other major exporters Italy, Germany and Canada. Despite a strong push for overseas sales, however, present market conditions pose challenges for manufacturers to achieve substantial export growth in 2009. Challenges One of the main challenges furniture suppliers in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are currently facing is the housing slowdown. As international developers postpone real estate projects and as foreclosures spread across the US, the number of consumers buying new furniture drops. The downturn has also affected the hospitality sector, which has been a strong market for suppliers offering midrange and high-end models. In response, makers are targeting emerging economies in Europe and Asia such as Russia and India.

Suppliers are also looking towards other countries in Asia, including South Korea, Malaysia and Taiwan. The increasing demand for reduced levels of lead and other chemicals in furniture is another key issue suppliers are addressing. The state of California in the US, for instance, has implemented an import policy requiring formaldehyde-free furniture exports to the state. This new regulation limits formaldehyde emissions from composite wood panels, hardwood plywood, MDF and particleboard. In response, suppliers are now using more environmentfriendly adhesive and paint that are

more expensive. This in turn has prompted suppliers to increase product quotes. Another major concern for makers is the reduced availability of material. The growing demand for the preservation of natural forests has put the spotlight on end users of timber. This has prompted governments and states to monitor and limit the volume

Antiques as Accents Antiques as Accents is one of the major suppliers of mirrored furniture and furnishings in the Philippines. Since its establishment in 1991, the company has expanded its product range from wall decors and home accessories to include furniture such as accent tables and cabinets. All output is exported, majority of which is shipped to Europe. Models are also sent to Australia, Hong Kong, Lebanon, Dubai and the US. Nearly all designs are made in-house, with OEM orders representing only 5 percent of production. Prices range from $10 to $450, depending on the size and the design. A three-piece nesting table set is quoted at $144, while a 50.8x50.8x66cm side table is available for less than $80. Among the company’s best-sellers are cocktail and side tables, and Venetianinspired mirrors. Antiques as Accents uses mainly hardwood and MDF for its furniture base, and float glass sourced from

the local subsidiary of Japan-based Asahi Glass. Adhesive and paint are purchased locally or imported from suppliers overseas. Four in-house designers are responsible for releasing eight new collections each year. Sampling takes two to three weeks, depending on the quantity and the type of product. Antiques as Accents operates a 3,000sqm factory in Rizal that also houses its head office and showroom. The polishing and grinding workshops are fitted with a dust ventilation system. There are 53 full-time workers, including five QC specialists. The construction of furniture bases is subcontracted to suppliers based in Marikina and Cavite city. Antiques as Accents sends three to four QA employees to check on their work. All mirrored furniture passes through a minimum of six stages before packing and shipping. Glass is first cut into the desired shape and size,
