String Workshop and Evening Concert Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas ~ Sarah Brenzo/Danny Flynn Kick off your week with Celtic energy! Back by popular demand - Master Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser, an in-demand performer and tutor throughout the U.S and Scotland, and Natalie Haas, a vibrant young cellist, recording artist, and teacher, will return to Southern Maryland for one day: Monday, February 18, 2008.

The Celtic Society of Southern Maryland is sponsoring this event in cooperation with St. Mary’s Ryken High School Student Organization Furthering Interests in the Arts (SOFIA) to bring Mr. Fraser and Ms. Haas to the area to offer our local students of the string family an exciting new approach to playing through their workshops and an evening concert, which is open to the public. His film credits include solo performances on the soundtracks of films including ‘‘The Last of the Mohicans” and ‘‘Titanic.” Natalie Haas plays regularly with Alasdair Fraser and is a recent graduate of the Juilliard School. Highland, Heath & Holler with Martin Hayes & Friends ----- the Prequel ----~ B.J. Altschul My first in-depth exposure to both traditional Irish music and set dancing came about 10 years ago during an Earthwatch study led by the late Scott Reiss, recorder performer extraordinaire with Hesperus, and his wife, Tina Chancey, an early music expert and co-founder of Hesperus. After growing up loving folk music in general and with a couple of semesters of Scottish country dancing under my belt, how could I resist signing on for a project titled “Celtic Music at the Crossroads”?

of tales on Martin, his bowing style and his practicing. By then we were forming our own ideas of his unique and innovative approach to both the music and the instrument. From Vincent we learned that Martin uses traditional tunes as a starting point and then adds many layers of interpretation. Although some purists might question how true to the original tradition the tune still is, it’s certainly true to the original spirit.

Tax-deductible pub crawl? Absolutely!! Somebody had to do it. And part of our team’s schedule fell during Willie Week (the Willie Clancy Summer Music School). This portended a difficult assignment. Little did I know that some of the musicians we would meet were the contemporary giants of Irish heritage, among them Martin Hayes. For those who have somehow escaped knowing who this wildhaired, soft-spoken fiddling genius is, Martin hails originally from County Clare and is now a resident of Seattle. He’s won the all-Ireland fiddle championship a half-dozen times and has all manner of other awards and accomplishments to his name. At one of the ceilis, P.J. Hayes, Martin’s dad, who was still living then, was leading the Tulla Ceili Band. Later, we heard Martin in concert and at the end of Willie Week traveled on to Limerick, where we got a taste of traditional music in an urban rather than a small-town festival setting. A special treat was a full-length concert by Martin with guitarist Dennis Cahill, at historic St. Mary’s Cathedral. Dennis told our group that the two of them played together so many years he could just sense what Martin was going to do next, and that was one of the keys to their performing so completely in sync with one another. At our final destination, the tiny town of Feakle, we enjoyed a private discussion with fiddler Vincent Griffin, one of Martin’s teachers. We heard a couple

Now, every time Martin and Dennis tour in the DC area, I make it a point to get to their concerts. Their recent performance at Strathmore with Alasdair Fraser on fiddle, Natalie Haas on cello, and Bruce Molsky on fiddle and banjo did not disappoint. Martin has that magical gift of taking a traditional tune and stretching it, exploring every nuance, and experimenting with all the musical styles you can think of – classical, jazz, world and then some – to make you feel like you’re hearing colors in the tunes you had no idea were there. What really thrilled me was the blending of performance styles of three fine fiddlers enhanced by the other string instruments. Once a student of Alasdair’s at his fiddle school in California, Natalie on cello certainly added a rich texture I wasn’t used to and would definitely enjoy hearing more. It was hard to sit in our seats and not dance in the aisle. It was equally hard not to be transported to a distant time or place during a slow air. While I don’t know the names of all the tunes on that night’s play list – one even sounded like an Irish equivalent of Orange Blossom Special – it was a concert to be remembered in this 10th anniversary year of my first trip to Ireland.

DANCE NOTES

EXCELLENT IRISH FIDDLE DOCUMENTARY

~ Edie O’Donnell

There's a great documentary on the preservation of the Donegal fiddle style on the Irish TV TG4 website. The program commemorates 25 years of work in collecting and teaching the style and tunes, both of which were in danger of dying out in the early 1980's. The documentary can be accessed by going to www.tg4.tv and clicking on the "Faisnei/s Cartlann" archive. The program is called "Cairdeas na bhFidile/iri" and it aired on 12/28/07 (or 28/12/07 Irish style). You'll hear some great music including a trip to Norway to compare fiddle styles and hear from Maurice Bradley who many will remember from last Summer's Folklife Festival and our own Dave Abe and Dave's son Tommy, who were interviewed for the show. It runs for an hour, including some interesting commercials.

On Sunday, January 27th, the GWCC monthly ceili was held at Cherry Hill Park, with nearly 70 enthusiastic dancers in attendance. The workshop dance was the Kilfenora Plain Set, taught by Don Kaliher. This dance is easy to learn and enjoyable for both beginner and advanced dancers. The band was the wonderful Bogwanderers…Jesse, Danny, Joe, Tabby and John, giving us their very best, as usual, and keeping all the dancers on their toes. The first set of dances included the Clare Mazurka Set, the Four Hand Reel, and the North Kerry Set. The pot luck tables once again showed off the culinary talents of our dancers. The second set of dances started with the Rakes of Mallow (a ceili dance for “swingers”). It was followed by the Cashel Set, and the Kilfenora, our workshop set. During the second break, Scott Pitner won the 50/50 prize. We ended the evening with November’s workshop dance, the Sliabh Fraoch Set, followed by a waltz, and concluded with the Clare Lancers Set. Please Note: the workshop previously mentioned here with Patrick O’Dea on February 28th has been cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. Patrick will be making another pass through these parts in the summer, and we hope to have an event with him at that time. Performances:

Reels and Ravioli?? Lancers and Lasagna??

Housing Needed for Visiting Irish families

~ Hugh Conway

~ Vicki Ryan-Barr

On Sunday afternoon, January 20th, the Tuesday Night Ceili Club and friends held a mini ceili at Esposito’s Italian Restaurant in Fairfax City, Virginia. Over 25 folks were there to dance off the pasta calories with some polkas and reels. A temporary floor, large enough for two sets, was installed, but some half sets had to navigate the restaurant’s tile floor. In keeping with the Tuesday Night Ceili Club custom, dancers rotated in and out of the sets, and even did figures twice, to give everyone a chance to dance the set. We danced for two solid hours, then stacked the floor and adjourned to our well deserved dinners. The club scored a double hitter - our favorite music and dance, and great food for all! Esposito’s is a great restaurant and we look forward to dancing there again. To be sure you don’t miss out on the next pasta party…just check [email protected] or www.ceilidance.com for the latest information.

As the Northern Virginia CCE Host-Finding Committee chair, I am seeking host families / households for the 26 Irish musicians, dancers and moms who will be graciously paying us a visit from 22 thru 31 October 2008. John Stack, who is the director, asked on behalf of the group, if they could possibly have 2 or 3 people stay together in one house. Many have never traveled such distance before and they would want to have their families stay together where possible. The host family would be responsible for making sure the guests arrive at their events and it is important that someone be in the home during the day for the most part. Right now we are considering such events as a DC bus tour, a DC museum day, GWCC ceili, shopping at a mall, Glen Echo Inn, Baltimore, Kennedy Center, and a reception at the Irish Embassy. John Stack also asked that one evening be set aside for all families and hosts to have dinner on them. Hosts are invited to attend all events and it is anticipated carpooling will be coordinated. I have met John Stack, his wife, Dolly and two of the other moms. They are fun, enthusiastic, talented Irish. Many of the kids are All-Ireland champions. They would be a pleasure and a great experience to have as house guests.

SET DANCE FOR FEBRUARY CEILI

Kendra Swann and I are meeting with John and his group of young dancers on February 23, 2008, in Listowel, Co Kerry, to refine our plans for their visit.

This month’s set is the Limerick Tumblers and notes are included on pages 10 & 11 of this issue. This set may look a little crazy but it truly is a blast! The Limerick Tumblers will be taught at the GWCC February Ceili at Cherry Hill Conference Center, College Park., Maryland, on Sunday February 24th.

If you are able to host some of the visiting dancers and moms this coming October, please send me your name, email, telephone, address and how many you can host as soon as you can. Thanks so much for your support. I know this will be a great time! Vickie Ryan-Barr (703) 521-4340 3215 S. Seventh Street Arlington, VA 22202

John Carney, the low budget indie was made in association with RTE. Hansard used his friends and even his mother, Catherine, as extras. Not only is the contemporary musical enjoying critical success, being recognized at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, the soundtrack has been in the top 20 in Ireland and in the top 10 in the US and has been nominated for 2 Grammy awards.

BEV’S BEST BETS Film Review by Bev Ricks

Once Written & Directed by John Carney Produced by Martina Niland Fox Searchlight Pictures May 2007 85 Minutes Ordinary people performing ordinary tasks walk the streets of Once. Neither the protagonist nor the female lead has a name. They are listed in the credits as simply Guy (Glen Hansard) and Girl (Marketa Irglova). He works in his father’s Hoover repair shop. A Czech immigrant, she cleans houses and sells flowers on Grafton Street to support her mother and toddler daughter. What is “extra” ordinary is that they each find ways to do what they love in spite of obvious obstacles. Girl snatches a few minutes each day to practice her music at a musical instrument shop. She plays Mendelssohn on unsold pianos because she can’t afford one of her own. He writes his own music and plays it on Grafton Street in the evenings and, when times are slow, at the shop. When he decides to cut a professional sounding CD of his music, Girl negotiates a better rental price for the recording studio. Guy finds other street musicians to back him. She takes him to a thrift shop to buy a suit and then it’s off to the bank where her persistence lands him a loan to pay for the recording studio. Cliché as it may sound; Guy and Girl make beautiful music together. Guy’s compositions charm; even when played on his well worn guitar, his songs show promise. When the piano is added and Guy and Girl harmonize, it’s positively inspiring. Between songs, the chemistry building between them is almost palpable. But so are their emotional wounds. Untrained as actors, Hansard and Irglova have an uncanny ability to make the audience “feel their pain.” Professional musicians, Hansard and Irglova wrote the music they perform in the film, backed by a group called Interference. Beautifully filmed in and around Dublin, Once was picked by Budget Travel magazine as one of 2007’s Ten Most Travel Inspiring Movies, garnering praise for scenes of Grafton Street, the beach at Dollymount Strand, and the country roads of Killiney. The relatively short (1 hour and 25 minutes) March 2007 release is rated R, likely for language.

Bev’s Rating: 5 stars!!!
