Red Dot Award: Product Design 2014

Welcome to the Red Dot Award!

Everyone likes to be a winner, but the motto “taking part is everything” also rings true – both at the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics and in the Red Dot Award: Product Design. All of the products and projects entered in the competition will receive a very specific service that only Red Dot can offer: using the objects directly, their design quality will be judged by a completely independent jury comprising more than 30 renowned members from all over the world. At the end of the day, the importance of a competition is defined only by its credibility. Clear criteria for granting awards, jury members with integrity as well as excellent framework conditions for product presentation are the characteristics of the Red Dot. With the great reliability that these factors ensure, our award has been uncovering design excellence in all conceivable product areas for a period of almost 60 years now. If you emerge from the established selection procedure as one of the champions, you will be the recipient of efficient measures that communicate you as a deserving winner and your products as a benchmark. Our service package for the winners of the award is growing constantly. Far beyond the

scope of presentation in the yearbook, at the Red Dot Gala and in the Red Dot Design Museums, in 2014 it will also include new channels, for example using smartphones and social media to inform design fans about your success. In addition, we will use a new online portal to bundle knowledge on the design achievements of our era: Red Dot 21 is the most comprehensive Red Dot medium for brands, innovations and their creators. When you take part in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2014, you will receive one year’s free presentation of the products you have entered. This is already a big win in terms of communication. Don‘t miss out on your chance to take part in the Red Dot Award! I wish you the very best of luck. Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. Peter Zec Initiator and CEO of the Red Dot Award

The Red Dot jury

Fair and independent The more than 30-man jury is the heart of the Red Dot Award: Product Design, because the well-known experts from all over the world guarantee with their know-how for the high quality standard of the competition and the significance of the Red Dot seal. The composition changes from year to year, whereby the jury members always pledge to a “Code of Honour” and are excluded from taking part in the competition. In addition, to avoid conflicts of interest, the jurors may generally not be employees of the manufacturing industry. In a several days lasting process, the international luminaries test, discuss and evaluate each single submission of the many thousands live and on-site – a logistic feat, as there is no preselection. The procedure follows a canon of adjudication criteria, which is constantly adapted to the latest findings in formal, technical, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. These criteria provide a guiding framework, which is filled in individually by each juror: due to their different backgrounds, the jurors consciously also assess the special intercultural aspects of design.
