…..CLUB MERCHANDISE…..

Hello to everyone from Bodmin Town and to our local supporters and friends. At the time of writing, there’s a threat of even more rain, probably calling for a pitch inspection – so, if you’re reading this, at the fifth attempt to play the tie, either the rain didn’t happen, or it did but made no difference!

Treat yourself or your nearest and dearest…. and help the club at the same time!

Bodmin Town come with a superb pedigree and an awesome reputation - top of the League, scoring goals and taking all the Cup competitions seriously. They are the highest-ranked club we could possibly play in any one season, so today’s the chance to see how we match up. Who would have thought that this season would bring four games against Premier Division teams? We’ve seen off Newquay and Tavistock in the League Cup, today it’s Bodmin in the Senior Cup, and a fourth game when the draw is made for the League Cup Quarter Finals. And if we win today there’ll be a fifth at revenge-seeking Newquay next Tuesday. In the less newsworthy but more important league programme, we beat Porthleven in our last match. It was the only game played in our Division, credit again to groundsman Mike Prisk. We had a large crowd (117), so many thanks also to everyone for a great turn-out. We now sit deceptively a long way out at the top. I say ‘deceptively’, because several clubs have games in hand. But they’ve got to win those games to start catching up – and some of them are against us and some against each other!

New-style club scarf, green/white, with club name & badge: £5 Club scarf, green/white, plain: £3 Scarf for your dog (as per photos): £3 Club mugs: £4 Window stickers with club badge, for your house or car: £1 Items to order:

People have described today’s match as the biggest in the club’s history. Knowing Quinny, he’ll just accept the challenge, tell the players to make the most of the opportunity, and play the usual way…..and your support will make a lot of difference, whichever way the game goes.

Coats, black, quilt-lined, with club badge & your initials: £65

Please do have a look at the ‘Fixtures’ page – it shows quite a few changes as a result of recent postponements.

Polo shirts, white, with club badge: £16

Also do read the page called ‘Talking Point: Promotion’, which explains the club’s thinking on the pros and cons of applying for promotion. Cheers, Tim

Today we extend a warm (or most probably wet and windy!) welcome to Trungle Parc to our distinguished visitors from Bodmin Town. We couldn’t have wished for a better draw in the Senior Cup and fully intend to make the most of the occasion. Bodmin will be disappointed to have been knocked out of the FA Vase recently on their own ground, but to be fair it was by higher-league opposition, and they still have three big prizes to aim for –the Premier Division title, the Senior Cup and the League Cup. If they manage all three they can consider themselves as good as the excellent 2012/13 team. But we intend to make them feel disappointed again today! Our 7-0 win against Porthleven may seem comfortable enough, but no game is easy and we all have to work really hard to earn the right to play the way we want and impose ourselves. The match gave us the opportunity to give four or five players the game time they need to slot into our playing pattern and maintain sharpness and readiness. It seems ages since this Bodmin game should first have been played, and even more frustrating that we’ve played only two games since Boxing Day. Whenever we had a postponement we went in for a gym session, so we haven’t been entirely idle. We’ve now got to make sure we continue the momentum we built up before this unintended “winter break”.

CHATTER WITH CHEESY

THE CORNWALL SENIOR CUP

The thoughts of Assistant Manager Mark Vercesi

sponsored by

Good afternoon! A warm welcome to all the players, officials, and supporters of Bodmin Town Football Club, and also everybody here supporting The Seagulls. I'm especially looking forward to seeing one of the best and loveliest club ladies around in Sheila Chapman. Sheila looked after me when I was a youngster (yes I was one once!) signing for Bodmin, and helped make my stay there very enjoyable. We are blessed here at Mousehole too, with what I consider as the best group of behind the scenes guys and girls that I have had the pleasure to be around. Keep up the good work, and Tim...keep delegating! I'm also looking forward to seeing my old St Blazey assistant manager, Terry Huddy - a great servant to the Cornish game, which included being a part of the County Youth and County Seniors coaching teams that I was privileged enough to play in. This is where more "old" jibes come into play: injuries take longer to clear up the older you are...I'm finding this out the hard way! However, physio and strengthening work has been going well and so I hope to be back playing today, if selected, and looking forward to testing my legs against some of the best midfielders around. Bodmin have been the benchmark for all Peninsula league clubs over the past decade, and so to test ourselves against the best is a massive day, not only for this current team, but for our whole club and its history. When the draw was made there were great roars and cheers on the team bus returning from Morwenstow. I’d decided not to go back on the bus after the terrifying drive up by Richard (!) but I was on the phone straight away to Quinny and could hear how excited the boys were! With postponements and Bodmin's good FA Vase run, we’ve been waiting for this game for a long time: let's hope we don't disappoint! Have a great day! Cheesy

TODAY’S OTHER FIXTURES INVOLVING SWP LEAGUE DIVISION 1 WEST TEAMS LEAGUE FIXTURES (all 3:00 kick off) Dobwalls v Porthleven

THE PORTHLEVEN GAME Mousehole 7-0 Porthleven: Saturday 30th January: SWP League, Division 1 West With all other West Division games called off on Friday or Saturday morning, it says a lot about the care, maintenance and condition of the Trungle Parc pitch that referee Mark Hosking took just a couple of minutes at 10 o’clock to declare the Porthleven match ‘ON’ that afternoon. A dry, bright, breezy, cool afternoon - well, flippin’ cold (or words to that effect) according to many of those huddlin’-an’-shiverin’ in the ground.

Penryn Athletic v Liskeard Athletic Penzance v Wendron United Plymstock v United St Dennis Sticker v Plymouth Argyle

Porthleven, their training tops bearing the signature of a famous TV chef and restaurateur (other eateries are available), fielded a youthful side including a lad who’s officially 16, but looked even younger. Mousehole, top of the league, would potentially go 11 points clear, with no rivals playing. We’d already beaten them twice 5-2 away in the League and Charity Cup, but would the sticky pitch upset our playing style this time? Yes - but only for three minutes.

Vospers Oak Villa v Illogan RBL Wadebridge v Town Millbrook

CORNWALL SENIOR CUP QUARTER FINAL (2:00 pm) Bude Town v Helston Athletic

Lewis Caspell with the first, another destructive left foot drive. Later, a Steve Burt burst, too sharp and quick for their big defender: penalty! Bradley Wills, low, 2-0. So far, scant reward for the first half control, until close to half-time when Burtie again breached his midfield curfew and stroked in a left-footer – his third goal this season, and all with the foot he’s only supposed to stand on. In the second half, relentless pressure both on and off the ball, and four second half goals. Lewis scored a smart 20-yard lob (yes, with that foot). Bradley went on to another hat-trick to overtake the still-injured Mark Vercesi at the top of the SWP-1W ‘Golden Boot’ table. And Wade Brown came on after his own couple of months out injured, to score a goal looking suspiciously like the one he last scored in the League Cup victory against Newquay in October. Porthleven’s local paper started their report: “Port were outgunned by an outstanding Mousehole team who strengthened their Division 1 West title claims with another devastating attacking display at Trungle Parc on Saturday” (acknowledgements to The Packet). Enough said!

NOTES ABOUT BODMIN TOWN Founded in 1889, the club moved to Priory Park in 1948. Joining the South Western League in 1953, they left for the East Cornwall Premier League in 1962, returned to the South Western League in 1969, and continued until 2007, then becoming founding members of the South West Peninsula League. Bodmin have enjoyed increasing success on the playing side since 1990. They were South Western League Champions in 1990/91, 1993/94 and 2005/06, and runners-up four times. Although finishing bottom in 2000/01 and again two years later, they were champions once and runners-up twice in the last four pre-Peninsula League seasons. In seven out of the eight full seasons in the SWP League, the club have been either champions (4 times) or runners-up (3 times). In 2011/12 they lost only 2 league games, scoring 145 against 34, winning the title by 19 points, and had similar success in the following season scoring 127 against 28. After the latter treble-winning season, several players left to join higher-league clubs and a period of rebuilding saw the club finish 7th. Last year they finished runners-up to St Austell.

First year, including board: £60 per board Second year: £50 per board

In each season in which the club has been eligible, Bodmin have declined to apply for promotion to the Western League Premier Division (Step 5). A ‘Topical Talking Point’ article about ‘Promotion’ appears elsewhere in this programme.

Bodmin have had some notable success in national Cup competitions. Entering the FA Cup every year since 2004/05, they reached the 3rd qualifying round in 2011/12 and the 2nd QR this season. In the FA Vase they have got to the 4th round five times since 1997/98, and the 5th round in 2012/13. Three weeks ago, they lost 3-1 at home in the 4th round to higher-league Ipswich Wanderers of the Eastern Counties Premier Division (Step 5), in front of 282 spectators.
