Referee Importance By: Steve Jablow

“Hello, My name is Steve Jablow, I was asked by Kickers Soccer Club to write a few paragraphs about the role that referees play in the games that your kids play. First of all, I want to introduce myself to you. I am a full time referee and assignor. The first part is pretty self-explanatory, but the second part probably isn't. As an assignor, I am responsible for ensuring that each game that is played is staffed by referees. There are around 6000 referees certified in Illinois this year. I am a State Referee which means I am at a level where there are only 30 of us at my level. Above my level are National Candidates and National Referees, followed by FIFA Referees. We have 9 National Candidates and 1 FIFA in Illinois As an Assignor I work with 2 other individuals and between us, we assign over 2500 USSF League games, ( these are the ones that your kids play in when they play for the Kickers ). We also assign various tournaments in the area, Indoor games, Jr. High and High School games. This is in addition to some Adult Amateur games. As a Referee, I work all of these types of games. I specialize in youth soccer. Those to me are the most enjoyable and challenging. If it is played by someone who is U23 or younger, I ref it. When a person decides to become a referee, they must complete some initial requirements. This includes 16 hours of class time and they must pass a written test. We also must on a yearly basis, pass a nationwide background check. This year, the IYSA has made it mandatory for a one time concussion awareness module. Each year thereafter, the referee must take 8 hours of classroom clinic, again pass a harder test and do the background check. At my level, in addition to the classroom time and background check, I also must pass on field assessments and a fitness test. So, now we get to the actual game of soccer. Kickers wanted me to write about the role we play in the game. It's a simple answer, but it always seems that it's extremely complicated. For some reason, parents, players, and sometimes coaches think we are out to get them, or that we have no idea what we are doing out there. I just wrote about what we need to do to become a ref and what we need to do to continue reffing each year. In Illinois, we lose 50% of new referees each year, and the overwhelming reason is parent behavior. If your kids play at a lower level or at a younger age, who do you think is going to be their referees? Probably the newer ones. When the young referees start their career, they are learning how to be a referee, just like your kids are learning to be soccer players. If you leave them alone and actually encourage them like you do for the players, guess what will happen? They become better refs because they stick to it, and as your kids get older and start to play at higher levels, these young refs start to build up their confidence and abilities to ref these more challenging games. But if you constantly beat them up verbally, they quit and the cycle starts over again and again and there are no good young refs working these younger games. In the coming months, I would like to talk about some of the issues that we as referees face on a regular basis from the fans that we encounter at games. Also, I would love to answer any questions that you as Kickers families might have. Such as the Laws of the Game, why we call certain things, and also why we don't call certain things.

Thanks for your time! “
