Annual Report 2015

Message from MMI’s Leadership Imagine-with all your mind Believe-with all your heart Achieve-with all your might Everything starts with a thought, a vision, a dream. At one time, MMI was a vision that someone Imagined with all of their mind. Here we are 42 years later still Believing with all our heart in that dream and Achieving with all our might. In the past year MMI has assisted more than a 1,000 individuals in improving skills and maximizing their independence. Back in 1973 when we opened our doors with a small number of people we could not have dreamed how much we would grow. Today we are one of the largest community rehabilitation providers in Michigan. Our mission of “Enriching Lives Through Employment, Training, and Community Access” continues to echo through the halls of MMI. MMI staff are committed to this mission and celebrate each and every success. Every staff member has a passion for serving and making positive differences in the lives of those receiving services. Over the past year much of MMI’s efforts have been directed at creating a greater degree of community integration for those receiving services. MMI continues to work with over 300 community partners that have contributed to this initiative. Through our Job Placement and Community Employment programs MMI has made jobs for people with severe disabilities a reality by providing the supports necessary to be successful. Individuals who chose to work in our Manufacturing operations have experienced an increase in time engaged in work as well as an increase in their hourly wage. In addition, MMI has provided the opportunity for all to participate in their local communities through our Community Connections program. MMI has been fortunate to be in a position to provide intensive supports for individuals with severe physical and cognitive disabilities. Our Sensory program addresses the physical needs of many of the individuals we work with while our Community Connections programs encourages them to be part of the community in which they live. At MMI we Imagine and Believe in a world where people with disabilities and barriers to employment are valuable contributors, and each and every day we work hard to tear down those barriers. We Imagine and Believe that services offered should be person centered in a way that maintains a person’s dignity and humanity, and respects their individual choice. We Imagine and Believe that our services create opportunity for our persons served to more fully participate in and contribute to their community. Together we are Achieving this. We are proud of MMI and our legacy. We are honored to be a part of the team that serves Central Michigan. Thank you for that privilege. We hope that you know that we will do everything within our power to make 2016 the best year ever for you and MMI. Sincerely,

Dan Eversole, Board Chair

Alan Schilling, President

Highlights from 2015  The Central Area Michigan Works! Consortium (CAMWC) program was divided between two

regions as a result of the Governor’s Prosperity Region Initiative. MMI has retained contracts with both areas.  MMI received a grant from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, which provided

participants in Clare the opportunity to visit the Leonardo da Vinci exhibit at the Midland Center for the Arts and create with clay at Space Studios of Midland.  Community Living Supports

the PATH and FAE&T programs and assisted 131 participants to obtain employment.  MMI promoted Self-Advocacy by assisting people in attending local disability pride events, MARO

Day at the Capitol, Walk and Roll for mental health awareness, meetings with Legislators, and registering to vote.  MMI has substantially increased our wire harness production with new contracts from several

Michigan companies and has expanded our capabilities in this area with the addition of two rubber injection molding presses.  After years of discussion and planning, MMI has placed many individuals on multiple shifts with

MMI’s Mission, Vision and Values Our Mission: Enriching Lives Through Employment, Training, and Community Access. Our Vision: Improve the quality of life for individuals receiving services and celebrate the uniqueness of each person.

Our Values:

We Believe…  All people will have the opportunity to participate and contribute to their community.  Services will be offered with a person centered emphasis, respecting choice.  Employment is a means of enabling people to reach their highest potential.  In providing businesses an opportunity to support the community through economically competitive contracts.  Business partnerships will be established utilizing ethical business practices in a quality work environment.  In treating each other with dignity and respect, valuing diversity, and committing to a safe environment.

IMAGINE, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE The intent of COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT is to support people in finding and keeping a job. In 2015, 70 individuals participated in MMI’s Job Development activities, and 202 people worked in Supported Employment, receiving assistance from MMI staff to secure and maintain their community jobs.  Working within a fluctuating economy, MMI is pleased that 23% of those in Job Development obtained employment.  Average starting wage for individuals in Job Development with independent placements was $9.04 per hour.  96% of MMI’s Supported Employment participants specified that they were working in the job of their choice, were satisfied with the number of hours they were working, and were over all happy with the services they were provided.

TRANSITIONAL EMPLOYMENT provides paid work and vocational training opportunities to increase skills that lead to employment in the community. This year, 259 individuals participated in Transitional Employment as their primary service. Participants who were enrolled in other services could also choose to participate in paid work opportunities as an element of their annual person-centered plan.  34% of the hours spent in Transitional Employment were applied to paid work opportunities.  3,428,798 production steps were completed with 99.94% quality. MMI Shipped 1,607,816 parts with 99.9% quality.

In COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, individuals take part in community activities that foster relationship opportunities and personal skill development. This year Community Connections assisted 215 people in accessing community integrated resources and learning new skills consistent with their interests and choice. In both Clare and Mt. Pleasant locations, the number of people receiving sensory services continues to rise. Participants in this program indicated 100% satisfaction with the services they received during the past year in the Community Connections program.

IMAGINE, BELIEVE, ACHIEVE COMMUNITY LIVING SUPPORTS (CLS) continued to grow over the past year, with a 5% increase throughout MMI’s service area. Community Living Supports services provide the foundation needed by individuals to be fully engaged in their surroundings. An individual’s involvement in his or her own community is determined by personal interest. This year MMI provided over 136,335 units of service in this program.

Case Management is offered through CAREER SERVICES. Employment guidance and job search support was provided to 316 participants in 2015; 65% obtained employment at an average starting wage of $9.06 per hour. In this program, we have continued to place emphasis on meeting the federal work participation regulations which require us to have at least 50% of our participants engaged in work-related activities for a minimum of 20 to 35 hours per week depending on their family situations. During the past year, MMI has been one of the top performers in the state achieving a rate of 79% which was well above the required average. MMI’s ART PROGRAMS continue to expand. Opportunities to explore one’s creative talents are instrumental in building self-esteem and self-confidence. Through the use of adaptive technology and creative strategies, MMI has been able to provide artistic opportunities for individuals.

Art is a universal language having the ability to unite all people by providing individuals with significant cognitive and physical disabilities a safe avenue to express themselves free from physical, social, and attitudinal barriers. Participating in artistic endeavors provides an opportunity for individuals to be seen for their abilities and not judged by their disabilities.
