Image Splash Ad The Splash Ad is a full, page-width unit displayed prominently across our digital magazines and within Homepage articles. We recommend utilizing visually rich, bold imagery with minimal copy so that it looks cohesive with Yahoo’s design aesthetic. The intention of the ad format is to appear native to the pages on which it appears. Creative should ideally have very little or no copy burned into the image, and no buttons - all of these elements detract from the native experience, and may be illegible or covered when scaled for smaller screens/tablet. Source creative should be 1440x600px (200KB), however, page width determines actual rendered ad dimensions. The actual rendered ad dimensions vary based on the users browser width and screen resolution. Ad scales to page width while maintaining a 12:5 aspect ratio. Except in the case of the Homepage Content Viewer where the ad displays at 980x408. Image Splash creative can run either with or without an HTML text overlay. The text ovleray mimics the article tiles on the magazine to provide a more native appearance. The text overlay also allows for an optional CTA. Image Splash Ad Options mage Splash allows for the option of using HTML overlay copy or not. Typically, one method will favor the assets available. If the creative is copy heavy it is best to use the HTML overlay. The HTML overlay has the added benefit of enhancing the native experience since the ad will appear to look more like the other tiles on the magazine page. Image Splash that does not use the HTML overlay will likely need some copy burned into the image. This should be kept to a minimum. The ad will scale down to nearly half the size on tablet so it is best to keep font sizes large and test final creative at half the size. A large amount of copy also causes the ad to look less native and more banner-like.

Image Splash ad with no Text Overlay

This Stride Rite ad is a great example of an Image Splash with no copy. Comprised of a lifestyle image, product shot, a logo, and tagline. There’s clearly no need for html overlay copy. The ad’s intent is clear. The Old Navy ad is a good example of an Image Splash with text overlay. A large bold image and logo keep the ad looking native. The user’s eye is still drawn to the messaging to see what the story is. They’ve learned to look in this area for content from their time spent on Magazines.

Image Splash Ad Safe Zones Title Safe Area It is recommended that all relevant content (logos especially) be designed within this area of the image to maximize user viewability.

1440x195

Image Splash ad with Text Overlay

Action Safe Area For Image Splash with text overlay, the 3 lines of HTML copy and a semi-transparent gradient beneath the copy in this area overlay a portion of the creative. Text within the image will be partially obstructed by these elements. Please ensure that there are no logos or other relevant content within the image in this area. The area marked is larger than the elements in it due to the responsive nature of the ad - the text remains the same size while the rest of the ad scales smaller (see next slide). For Image Splash with no text overlay, logos and other relevant content should not sit within the marked 260x44 area as it is occupied by the Sponsored Link. The area marked is larger than the Sponsored text due to the responsive nature of the ad - the Sponsored Link remains the same size while the image scales smaller.

Image Splash Ad Responsiveness The above image shows the relative size of text to image when the ad is scaled to 1440x600. The image below shows the same creative when scaled to the minimum dimensions for Desktop (960x400). As you can see the text and sponsored link remain the same size for optimal readability, while the image alone is scaled smaller. The text and sponsored link now cover a greater percentage of the image. Note: on tablet the image will scale to 768x320, however, the overlay elements will scale slightly smaller as well. Note: the splash ad displays at 980x408 within articles accessed via Homepage. Please test your final creative at 50% of it’s size to ensure that logos and any copy burned into the image are legible on smaller screens.
