PARENT INFORMATION EVENING WEDNESDAY 22 MAY, 19:00 - 20:00 Next week parents will have an opportunity to learn more about the IMYC, which is a new programme we are bringing into the school. It follows on from the IPC which we use up to Year 6. This event will be of particular interest to parents of students in Year 6, Year 7, and Year8, but all parents are welcome to attend. Students in Year 6, Year 7, and Year 8 may also join us, since they may find it helpful to know more about what lies in store for them next year. There will also be information about other changes to the Middle School, such as the creation of a 1-to-1 laptop environment. If you are interested in attending, it will really help us if you click here to let us know you are coming in advance.

SHARK CLASS IPC – FAIRGROUNDS! The Sharks Class has recently been following an IPC unit of work on a theme that focuses on ‘Fairgrounds’. We all know that fairground rides are designed to thrill our senses, through fear, excitement and the unexpected. How are these rides powered in a way which enables them to speed up and slow down at just the right moments, whilst staying on a track that twists upside down? These mysteries were revealed as we learned more about the science behind energy, forces, sound and light.

For the Exit Point of our unit, we visited Meworld in Busan. We all had a fantastic time and enjoyed riding the rollercoaster, the flumes, and the Viking boat among many other rides. Fortunately the park was very quiet and we were able to go on all the rides as many times as we wanted.

Our Five Senses

The Penguin class has been learning all about their five senses. We have sensory stations set up in our classroom to explore each sense. We have learned that sometimes we only use one or two of our senses at once and other times we use all of them! Take a look inside our classroom…

We cut out pictures from magazines and pasted them under the sense we thought we would use the most.

We listened to sound clips on the computer and made a guess of what it was.

This is our taste test station. Was it sour, sweet, salty or bitter? We took a guess what it was.

This is the touch station. Can we guess what it is just by feeling it?

This is the smell station. We took a guess what it was just by smelling it. Some were a little tricky!

We tried to build a Lego house by sight. We tried to copy the one in the picture.

Author of the Week! Continuing for a second week with the books of Steven Cosgrove, this time we will be reading a tale that ties together two issues that the students of OIS are clearly passionate about – one of these is a willingness and readiness to embrace people’s differences and accept them for who they are, and the other one is a clear reluctance to accept that finding litter on the ground orin the sea has to be an inevitable fact of life. Cosgrove has woven these two issues together very nicely in his tale of “Cap’n Smudge”, a simple story with a clear message that I’m sure will stay in the minds of OIS students for a long time to come.

I love you, mom!
