TAXONOMY OVERVIEW This IDC study provides an overview of the IDC's mobile phone market definitions. The taxonomy provides technology definitions as well as a description of IDC's approach to segmenting and measuring the market.
DEFINITIONS
Mobile Phone Taxonomy Product Category Feature Phone To be classified as a feature phone in IDC's taxonomy, the device must run a proprietary or real-time operating system (RTOS). An RTOS that powers a feature phone is typically tightly controlled by the manufacturer of the mobile phone. Software developer kits, for example, unlike smartphone/high-level operating systems (OSs), aren't widely available for all developers. If the feature phone runs third-party software, it does so with the help of interfaces such as BREW or Java ME. Feature phones also typically have less processing and memory power than smartphones. IDC's feature phone category also includes basic or "send and end" phones, which are designed to perform phone calls, SMS, and nothing more.
Smartphone These devices contain a high-level operating system including but not limited to Android, BlackBerry OS, Firefox OS, iOS, Sailfish, Tizen, Windows Phone, Symbian (S60 or higher), or other HTML-based platforms. Third-party applications must be able to be natively installed, and they must be able to run

IDC also requires these devices to have a screen size of less than 7.0in. as well as out-of-the-box cellular voice telephony with an in-built mic/speaker, capable of connecting to a cellular network for voice communication through a service provider plan.
Product/Product Detail Phablets are a subcategory of smartphones with a screen size of 5.5in. up to, but excluding, 7.0in. Smartphones with a screen size of
