15:00 - 16:00 What if…? And so What…? Pamela Barrett Topic: Marketing & Recruitment Audience: Providers ►Session description This seminar is about consequences. What happens if things go wrong…? And what will it mean for my programme, my institution/ organization? Things go wrong all the time and the patterns of global student mobility and international markets are in a constant state of change. We can’t always predict these changes or their consequences. Risk management is the art of managing the “What if….?” so that we can gain from shifts in demand and not lose everything when difficult events take place. Identifying and mitigating risk will help you be more effective, and will improve your international student recruitment and marketing. In this session we’ll analyse risks relevant to our industry and show you how to manage them. Based on close-up consulting experiences with many of the most active institutions and organizations in international education today, we will discuss the risk management practices which can deliver enhanced international student recruitment. We’ll identify those areas that can make a real difference and share the tools that can help you achieve your goals. ►Speaker Pamela Barrett Director, Barton Carlyle, United Kingdom

17:00 - 18:00 Beyond the Horizon: Trends Shaping the Future of International Education Mike Henniger Topic: Market Intelligence

Audience: All

Audience: All ►Session description Just when universities had slowly come to terms with the changing marketing landscape in order to recruit international students, there is seismic shift on the horizon in the works. Social media, in all its permutations, and much like all e-commerce is now heading down the ‘chatbot’ pathway. Artificial Intelligence is here to stay and become part of our engagement lifestyle, and the generation to come is quite at home with it. So how can universities harness this force to push themselves into consideration by international students? This session explores the ‘Artificial Intelligence’ perspective and where do we go from here in the ever changing and crowded international student recruitment space. ►Speaker Dr. Duleep Deosthale Co-Founder & Vice President, Admission Table, USA

►Session description This session will draw on an industry publication jointly produced by Barton Carlyle and ICEF Monitor for NAFSA 2016. The publication examines the major trends that will shape international education and international recruitment over the next five years, including the rising importance of risk management, the growing role of pathways and partnerships, the increasing complexity of the marketplace, and the wide-ranging impacts of technology. ►Speaker Mike Henniger Vice President, Sales & Marketing, ICEF, Germany Mike Henniger is the VP Marketing and Sales for ICEF and has previously held senior positions in the language, vocational and post secondary sectors.

Room: Bellevue 18:00 - 19:00 Anti-Marketing – A New Way Forward Adrian Liley Topic: Marketing & Recruitment Audience: Providers ►Session description “Great marketing is about being so remarkably different that current customers can’t help but talk about you. That if you provide a delightful experience, customers will not only come back but they’ll bring their friends. They become your strongest marketing asset. Stop focusing on trying to get new customers. Focus on the customers you have. They will bring you the customers you want.” (Peter Shankman – writer and entrepreneur). Anti-Marketing is a new way of looking at things. Whereas before, marketing teams concentrated on the four ‘P’s, the seven ‘E’s and ways to attract customers, anti-marketing is almost the total opposite. With the dawn of the digital age, the internet has come to dominate all marketing and sales activities and yet marketing practices have mostly remained the same. It is time to move on. The age of post-modernist marketing is here. This session will look at such aspects as how the markets have fragmented, how the customer has assumed multiple conflicting identities and how companies are struggling to keep up with the technology and use it in their environment. It will also look at the importance of taking care of your most valuable asset – your staff. Finally, we will look at various new methods of marketing which would have been unheard of a few years ago – in the other words, the core of antimarketing itself. ►Speaker Adrian Liley Director, SuperCourses, United Kingdom

Adrian Liley has worked in the language teaching industry for 38 years as a teacher and a marketing manager. He has spent time living in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and China working for language schools such as Embassy, Regent, British Study Centres and Language Studies International, the governments of Japan and Saudi Arabia, the British Council and International House. Whilst in China he set up his own company called Asiaquest which represented the needs of over 41 institutions worldwide in the Chinese market. He has written 6 novels on the industry and given many talks on the subject of marketing and anti-marketing in this industry. He is now Director of a new online student recruitment agency called SuperCourses (www.supercourses.co.uk) which uses all the tools of antimarketing to do business. Page 8 of 38

15:00 - 16:00 Navigating a Crowded Market: The Changing Models of Pathways Programmes Nelson Furtado Topic: Market Intelligence Audience: All ►Session description Pathways programmes have moved from a niche, nice-tohave to a widespread, must-have in international student recruitment. Pathways providers thus need to evolve their programmes and business models to stand out in a crowded marketplace. The continued upswing of investment in pathways providers is fuelling the development of global pipeline models and aggressive pitches to potential partner institutions. At the same time, students are being recruited earlier and earlier in their academic tracks – more pathways programmes are targeted to international students who have not completed upper secondary education. The outcomes of pathways programmes are beginning to diverge as well. Some programmes are increasingly integrated with degree programmes at partner universities/colleges, while others seek to offer students the most post-pathway options possible. This session will explore recent examples of some of these trends and highlight implications of the changing pathways landscape on international recruitment and student success. ►Speaker Nelson Furtado Lead Analyst, Illuminate Consulting Group, USA

Nelson Furtado is the lead analyst for ICG, with a specific focus on performance and trend analysis in international education. Prior to joining ICG, Mr. Furtado worked for the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). Mr. Furtado also worked for the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities on issues including academic credit transfer and access to higher education. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree from the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences at University College London, Mr. Furtado holds a B.A. with Honours in Communication Studies from Carleton University, with Minors in Law and Statistics.

The expert panel will explore and give colour to recent statistical research conducted by English UK and its insight partner, StudentMarketing.
