An expedition for ice lovers The Ice Lover Expeditions has been great successes so far. You will be able to capture great photos during this trip and we will schedule longer stops than normal cruises when going ashore in order to provide you with enough time to get these excellent images. We use two zodiac boats to get closer to the wildlife on the ice or when exploring and searching for photo opportunities in front of the glaciers. This expedition is for photographers who want to travel in smaller groups and capture wildlife in white landscapes!

Svalbard Svalbard is situated at about 80 degrees north, so we schedule the expedition in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions. Our captain is an expert navigator in arctic conditions and serves as our main advisor when planning the expedition in a manner that allows us to maximise the photo opportunities and enjoyment for you on this trip. Of course we will also include excursions ashore amongst walrus colonies (or walruses on the ice), cliff birds and other places that are seething with life during this time of year.

Your boat - the M/S Malmø The M/S Malmø is spacious and well suited for photography. Most participants will be lodged in shared twin or triple cabins, but we also have one single cabin. M/S Malmø is a traditional 37 metres long ship. She was built in 1943 in Sweden for the Swedish Maritime administration as an ice-strengthened, pilot ship. She was on duty for the Administration until 1983, when she was sold and later chartered out as a school ship. Many young sailors have received their maritime education on the M/S Malmø throughout the years. In 2013 she was carefully rebuilt to a passenger ship with space for 12 passengers. In spite of her old fashion charm, the M/S Malmø is equipped with the latest navigation and security equipment. She is thoroughly maintained and in good condition. All bed linens and towels are provided. Meals will be served at times that are based on the daily activities and with a varied, tasty menu, you won’t be go hungry on this trip. Two very spacious zodiacs will be used to get us closer to the photo subjects and for going ashore.

What to wear? During the time you’ll be visiting Svalbard, the temperature will be around 2 to 5°C. Due to the wind chill factor, and when travelling to the northern and eastern parts of the archipelago, you may experience temperatures a few degrees below zero. There is normally very little rain (snow) in Svalbard, which is considered a semi-desert. When going ashore by Zodiacs, make sure to wear a waterproof jacket and trousers, and knee-high rubber boots. The key is to dress in three or more layers, which allows perspiration, insulates you from the cold and protects you against the wind. The layering method also allows you to easily adjust your clothing when the weather and temperatures change. The inner layer ➝ Clothing next to your skin must move perspiration from your body to keep you dry and warm. This layer should be quite tight to your body. Good materials for the first layer are wool or synthetic materials. Cotton should never be worn close to the body, and preferably not at all. The middle layer (or layers) ➝ This layer provides insulation and retains body heat without restricting movement. Suitable materials for this layer are polar fleece or wool. This way you control your body temperature, and on a cold day we recommend two or more middle layers. It is better to wear several thin layers than one thick layer. On cold days you may need extra insulation. The outer layer ➝ The main function of this layer is to offer protection against the wind and water, but also to let out excess body heat. We recommend breathable materials such as Gore-Tex. Impregnated cotton materials are not recommended. The top ➝ 80% of your body heat is lost through your head. Your head is like the body’s funnel, and you should always wear a hat. The same principle applies here – preferable materials are synthetic fibre or wool, and windproof too. Hands ➝ These parts of your body are extra sensitive. It is important to keep hands and feet dry and warm. The same layering method applies here. Use inner gloves made of synthetic fibre, silk or wool covered with a wind and waterproof mitten. Mittens are much warmer than gloves! Please remember to bring an extra pair of mittens. Feet ➝ For your feet you should wear inner socks of synthetic fibre and cover with layers of wool or synthetic socks. A pair of solid knee-high rubber boots are the secret weapon when going ashore on the Zodiacs. It is also wise to bring wool insoles.

ABOUT THE EXPEDITION Information about Svalbard and the expedition ➔ Climate During the time you’ll be visiting Svalbard, the mean temperature will be 2 to 5°C. Due to the wind chill factor, and when travelling to the northern and eastern parts of the archipelago, you may experience temperatures a few degrees below zero. There is normally very little rain (snow) in Svalbard, which is considered a semi-desert. When going ashore by zodiac, make sure to wear waterproof jacket and trousers, as well as knee-high rubber boots. ➔ Electrical sockets The electrical supply aboard the ship is 220 volts using European (not US or UK) two-prong plugs. We recommend that you bring an international adapter if needed. ➔ Currency The currency in Longyearbyen is the Norwegian Kroner (NOK). Currency on board M/S Origo is the Norwegian Kroner (NOK), EURO or US Dollars (USD). Credit cards (VISA, MasterCard and AmEx) will be accepted on the ship and in most stores on the island. No traveller’s checks or other checks are valid. ➔ Tips Tipping is discretionary, although a rough guideline is $15 US Dollars per passenger per day. This is divided by the crew on the boat. ➔ Bar Service The bar carries a selection of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. Your bar bill will be payable at the end of the expedition. ➔ Camera Whatever camera you use, be sure to check that it is working properly before you leave home, and perform sensor cleaning (by yourself or an expert). We recommend to bring two cameras so you have one back-up if something happens with your primary camera. It’s also handy with one camera with a telephoto lens and another with a wideangle lens. The most important thing with your camera is that it has good lowlight capabilities (High-ISO). At least ISO 1600 will in many situations be your desired ISO setting. ➔ Batteries and storage Bring back-up batteries for your cameras, flashes etc. You can recharge your batteries on board. In cold climates the batteries do not last as long as. The general rule is to bring more memory cards than you expect to need. We recommend at least 150 GB in CF or SD card. ➔ Lenses
We recommend a 400+ mm telephoto lens for photographing polar bears and other wildlife. A 70-200mm is very useful for landscape photography. A wide angle (20mm or wider) is nice to use on close animals with great surroundings, and for landscape images. ➔ Laptop
It’s always good to have a laptop with 1 to 2 big back-up disks to store and edit your images. This is also how you can share your photos with others during the expedition. ➔ Flash
Use of flash might be useful when photographing birds in flight, but with polar bears we don’t use a flash. ➔ Weatherproof equipment
Your equipment should be weatherproof, or you should bring rain cover for your equipment. A dry bag is strongly recommended when traveling with camera gear in the zodiacs. Rain is not the worst, but it’s sea water spray in the zodiacs. Small sand particles on some beaches might also cause problems.
