IBM in Poland – A Short Overview 2

Welcome to IBM Poland 2011 marked the IBM Corporation’s 100th anniversary. Through our first century as an enterprise, our company has been a leader in science, in business and in society. In all these arenas, our work has been marked, above all, by continually moving to the future with the word “Think!” as our main message. For the last 100 years IBM has been actively involved in building a friendlier and smarter planet. In the 1950s we developed the mainframe architecture which is still considered the most reliable architecture in the market. In 1969 IBM computers helped NASA land the first man on the Moon. In 1980s we developed the RISC architecture for corporate servers and a year later we introduced personal computers which soon became an industry standard. IBM developed and introduced to the market many solutions that have become part of our everyday reality. To name just a few, there are: cursor, hard disc, bar code and a popular automatic spell-checker. Among IBM employees there are Nobel Prize winners. We belong to a community of over 400 ,000 people spread all over the world, working in over 170 countries and in many different time zones. IBM in Poland is delivering technologies, products and services to customers and partners in all industries. We are proud to be working with our many clients and partners to tackle some of the most complex and challenging problems – from helping banks to run thousands of financial transactions per second to helping government organizations increase the efficiency of public systems using data analytics tools. We are also working with Polish metropolises to help them become Smarter Cities. Although today we do not know what the world will look like in 100 years, at IBM we are focused on helping develop solutions will continue to contribute shaping this future – here in Poland and around the world.

Supporting the national agenda: building a Smarter Poland

Building 21st century skills through education and industry partnerships

IBM established its first Polish office in Warsaw in 1935. However, we have been serving customers in Poland since the 1920s when we delivered tabulating machines to the Locomotive Construction Factory - long before our competitors came to the region.

The IBM Academic Initiative is a global program that facilitates the collaboration between IBM and educators to teach students the information technology skills they need to be competitive and keep pace with changes in the workplace. In Poland more than 30 academics and universities are participating in cooperation based on this initiative.

Today, IBM is supporting the Polish national agenda by delivering smart technologies and a full range of consulting services to all of the main industries in Poland.

Smarter Planet: In 2008 IBM began a global conversation about how our planet can become smarter. Since that time we have proven that this is far more than a concept. Just one example involves IBM working with the Polish Border Guard to help secure the external border of the European Union (EU) and enhance the security of the EU's internal borders by quickly and automatically checking the identity and visa status of people and vehicles on the territory of Poland.

Smarter City – Katowice: In 2010, IBM ran an IBM Executive Service Corps (ESC) project with the City Hall of Katowice. A team of IBM’s top managers worked with the City and the Silesia Metropolis to identify key areas for development and to outline areas where technology can help to transform the city’s systems and processes. Katowice was the second city in the world to take part in the ESC initiative.

Smart Energy: Together with one of its business parters, IBM has developed Poland’s first smart metering software at IBM’s Software Laboratory in Krakow. The solution enables intelligent electricity use in more than 15 million households in Poland. This was the first such software in Central and Eastern Europe and heralds a new era of intelligent technologies that can have a major impact on the way citizens interact with electricity providers. In addition, Supercomputer Nautilus at Warsaw University has been twice recognized by the prestigious Green 500 ranking as the most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world.

Smarter Banking: ZUNO, the European Internet bank provides exceptional customer service while keeping its cost low, in part due to IBM software and hardware, all outsourced to and run by IBM Global Services. IBM’s systems also support Poland’s bank, Pekao SA, to better serve their customers.

Smarter Service: Play mobile provider is using IBM systems to support the sales and distribution business, as well as customer services. The retail network Społem Wroclaw is using IBM’s Smart Retail solutions to gain a competitive advantage, improving in-store traffic flow, speeding checkout and increasing customer service.

In 2010, we opened the first Cloud Competence Center in Wroclaw University of Technology. In the same year, 500 students took part in a virtual apprenticeship for Wroclaw University of Technology with more than 50 IBM employees as coaches and mentors during summer months.

IBM Mentor Place is a key component of IBM's overall commitment to public education and raising student achievement. IBM Poland has implemented two Mentor Place projects: one for girls from orphanages and the second for high schools pupils. More than 40 IBM employees have mentored pupils via the Mentor Place portal.

IBM Poland tries to ensure that its programs has maximum positive impact and benefit in the communmities most in need – such as those affected by the recent flooding in Poland.

IBM KidSmart Early Learning Program integrates new interactive teaching and learning activities using the latest technology into the pre-kindergarten curricula. IBM's KidSmart program helps children learn and explore concepts in math, science and language. Based on this program and in cooperation with IBM, the Polish Ministry of Education prepared national pre-kindergarten curricula. Between 2009 to 2010, IBM donated more than 260 KidSmart educational units (worth US$540,000) to preschools in Poland and provided training for more than 600 teachers (worth US$160,000). In 2011 IBM Poland will donate more than 100 additional KidSmart units. Evaluation of IBM KidSmart Early Learning program in Poland showed that both the comfort levels of using IT amongst teachers and children has increased significantly, with 99 percent becoming either comfortable or very comfortable in with working with computers.

Reading Companion is IBM's web-based literacy program that uses novel speech recognition technology to help adults and children gain and increase literacy skills. In 2010, IBM donated access to Reading Companion to more than 20 organizations and schools in Poland.

Uplifting communities through transfer of skills and expertise Over the 100 years of IBM’s existence, we have developed and refined a thoughtful and comprehensive approach to corporate citizenship that aligns with IBM’s values. One of the key areas that we have been doing this in Poland is in extending information and communication technologies into learning and teaching curricula for children. In Poland, IBM has been working closely with the Ministry of Education to implement programs such as KidSmart Early Learning, and TryScience.

The unique IBM Corporate Service Corps program deploys teams of selected high potential employees to emerging regions to work with government, nonprofit and non-governmental organizations on critical local projects. Teams of IBM ‘employee volunteers’ from Poland have contributed to the success of the projects in Nigeria, Brazil, the Philippines and Vietnam to address key issues such as education, water management and disaster readiness.
