Humphrey’s Bar is named after Humphrey of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Gloucester (1390 – 1447) Here is a brief account of this historical character. Humphrey became Duke of Gloucester and Chamberlain of England following his father’s death in 1414. He was son, brother and uncle of kings, being Henry IV’s youngest son, Henry V’s brother and uncle to the latter's son. Humphrey gained reputation as a successful commander during King Henry V’s battles in France. His popularity in London and his ability to keep the peace made him Chief Justice of South Wales. Humphrey retired from public life around 1441.
