sportsliter control solutions THE SPORTSLITER SOLUTIONS ADVANTAGE Hubbell Lighting’s SportsLiter Solutions is known worldwide for providing better lighting because we utilize world class products and a design practice established by the sports lighting authority, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). Designing lighting to the recommended practice of the IESNA, publication RP-6 is an important aspect to deliver controlled appropriate levels of illumination that provide players, spectators, and neighboring communities the lighting excellence they demand.

LIGHTING CONTROL BENEFITS While it’s true that all Hubbell SportsLiter products produce the highest quality sports field lighting, that’s just the beginning of a sports lighting design. SLS has also developed an extensive collection of eco-friendly lighting controls; systems for any sports lighting project big or small. The possibilities are vast, but all share similar goals – control flexibility, reducing energy usage and helping curtail owner and taxpayer’s concerns about lights operating when fields are not in use. Hubbell’s commitment to innovation leads to energy savings and eco-friendly technologies. Since the beginning, reducing energy consumption and providing superior illuminated sports environments has been a top priority for Hubbell SLS. Controlling light properly helps to save energy by using light when and where it is needed most. With SLS control options, you’ll find everything you need to make your lighting control project a success from the recognized expert in lighting control – without a one size fits all approach.

THE IMPORTANCE OF UTILIZING CONTROLS Market trends suggest that the demand for energy resources will rise dramatically over the next 20 years: • Global demand for all energy sources is forecast to grow by 57% over the next 20 years • U.S. demand for all types of energy is expected to increase by 31% within 20 years • By 2030, 56% of the world’s energy use will be in Asia • Electricity demand in the U.S. will grow by at least 40% by 2032 • New power generation equal to nearly 300 (1,000MW) power plants will be needed to meet electricity demand by 2030 • Currently, 50% of U.S. electrical generation relies on coal, a fossil fuel; while 85% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions result from energy-consuming activities supported by fossil fuels • Increased operating costs will occur due to higher electrical costs Given this challenging landscape, what steps do sports facility owners need to take today to survive a potentially disruptive energy future? At the present time, the best way to manage the long term costs of your sports lighting system, while maintaining adequate playability of sport and spectator enjoyment is to manage light levels and their times of use.

energy saving control solutions A SportsLiter control strategy depends on the needs of your project, from safe key switches to automatic operation of the field lighting. Control strategy decisions involve what fixtures will be powered at any given time to save energy - always providing the ability to manually override in the event of games that go into overtime. Additionally, managing sports field lighting when sports facilities are open and closed will result in lower electrical costs as well as satisfying neighboring communities concerns that lights will not be inadvertently left on.

Web Based Control Systems Hubbell Building Automation’s wiHUBB® Access Point is a user friendly, web-based device for commissioning and monitoring devices within the wiHUBB wireless mesh network. The intuitive and easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI) provides building owners and facility managers with the ability to schedule and control individual wiHUBB-enabled fixtures. The wiHUBB Access Point communicates securely over wired TCP/IP connections using HTTPS/SSL and 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) when transmitting over the 900MHz radio frequency to other devices within the wiHUBB wireless self-healing mesh network. HOW IT WORKS SLS – control systemS Hubbell Lighting is committed to providing best-in-class products and solutions that offer superior performance, with world-class service and support. Whether it’s the seamless integration of Sports Lightng, or integration with third-party products and systems such as irrigation control, Hubbell solutions present the reliability and convenient control required for today’s sports facilities.

Energy Savings Example It’s pretty simple. You save energy by turning off SportsLiters when no one’s using them. Or, you turn off some of the SportsLiters during practice. Relying on people to switch them off and on is hit or miss at best. That’s where SportsLiter Solutions Control Systems bridge the gap. The potential for energy savings makes the use of automated lighting controls a smart choice in sports lighting. Lighting controls can be used to automatically turn SportsLiters on and off as needed, preventing energy waste. In this example SLS controls were used to control the light levels on soccer fields from practice 20 footcandle levels to full competition light levels of 30 foot-candles. This scenario saves over 45% in energy costs.
