HP LaserJet Printers Supported in Citrix MetaFrame Environments abstract: Citrix has collaborated with HP to test select HP LaserJet printers and their associated HP printer drivers in a Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server environment. MetaFrame XP Presentation Server for Windows with Feature Release 3 was tested on both Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 systems. This test was run to determine how HP printers and their associated printer drivers performed using the standard printer and printerrelated features tests that Citrix uses to test its MetaFrame Presentation Server and ICA Client software. This document lists all of the LaserJet printers tested by HP in MetaFrame environments, explains the printer tests performed by Citrix, identifies which HP Printers and printer driver versions were used, and describes any issues that occurred while performing these tests.

LaserJet Printers and Supported Driver Versions The table below identifies the HP LaserJet printers and associated drivers that are supported in MetaFrame environments by HP. These printers and printer drivers were tested by HP. A description of the defect resolutions and known product limitations is included in this section.

Testing Performed by HP HP performs Windows NT Terminal Server/MetaFrame 1.8, Windows 2000 Terminal Server/MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, and Windows Server 2003/MetaFrame XP Presentation Server testing on all drivers and feels confident in the stability and functionality of the driver versions mentioned in this article. HP also screens all driver releases to ensure that the drivers are free of memory leaks and memory allocation issues. HP has selected six LaserJet printers for Citrix to test that serve as a representative test sample for all printers in the HP LaserJet printer family. Because the code bases of these six printers are common to all printers in the HP LaserJet printer family, the Citrix testing of these select printers translates to all other HP LaserJet printers. All HP LaserJet printers and their associated printer drivers listed in this document are considered by HP to be supported in MetaFrame environments.

Resolved Issues •

Recurring Blue Screen When Using Different Combinations of Drivers This issue occurs when an HP PCL driver (version 4.3.2.38 to 4.3.2.50) is installed on the server and an HP PCL driver not of the same version or Microsoft in-box driver is installed on the client. This incompatibility scenario causes the driver on the server to enter an infinite loop and results in a blue screen on the server. To resolve this situation, update the HP driver on the server to the version listed in the table above.



Blue Screen This issue occurs when an HP PCL driver (version 4.3.2.38 or earlier) reads beyond an array boundary.

This issue occurs on NT4.0 Terminal when the server runs out of memory as the driver is executing.

Unresolved Issues •

Client Driver Settings Lost During Auto-creation This is a limitation of MetaFrame. Driver settings, such as tray configuration, duplexer, printer memory, and quick sets are not read at auto-creation. Paper size and orientation are the only client settings that are read during auto-creation. The remaining settings are determined by the default settings of the driver installed on the server. If Feature Release 1/Service Pack 1 or later is installed on the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, go to the properties of the auto-created printer and configure the driver for features manually, then set the tray configuration, duplexer, and hard disk settings. The settings will be saved to the users’ profile when users log out. Printer settings will be restored the next time users log in. This feature is available in environments running MetaFrame XP with Feature Release 1 and Service Pack1 or later.

Resolved Microsoft Issues •

Blue Screens in NT Terminal Server When Printing to HP PCL Drivers and Logging Off Clients This is an NT defect; Microsoft has a hotfix, Q330305. Contact Microsoft for the hotfix.

Supported Printing Features •

All printing features of the driver are supported in Terminal Server/MetaFrame environments with the exception of bi-directional communication to client printers. Bi-directional communication to networked printers is unaffected.

Citrix-tested HP LaserJet printers Citrix tested the following HP LaserJet printers and their associated drivers with MetaFrame XP Presentation Server for Windows with Feature Release 3. Throughout the testing, no problems were encountered when running Citrix test cases with the HP Printers and drivers listed for each test case.

Testing Methodology for HP LaserJet Printers Printer setup – Printers were connected to both client and server systems, and as standalone network printers using HP JetDirect. Printers were connected to client and server systems using parallel cable. Note on hardware used – Varied client and server systems from numerous manufacturers were used throughout the testing process; the number of systems and configurations are outside the scope of this document. Note on Description – This is a base description of the feature and what it does. Note on Test Methodology – This is a basic summary of the testing that was performed on the feature. Actual testing is much more extensive and, therefore, beyond the scope of this document.

1. Network Print Servers Description Network print servers (not running MetaFrame) are servers with shared printers attached to them. Administrators import these network print servers into the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server farm to make the shared printers available to all users when they connect to the server farm.

Test Methodology HP LaserJet printers were attached to the print server using a parallel cable or installed by creating a TCP/IP port and connecting to the printer through JetDirect. These printers were configured for multiple users. Drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The network print server was imported into the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server farm, and the availability of shared printers was verified. Printers were then assigned users for auto-creation, allowing domain users logged on to the MetaFrame server farm to verify that the shared network printer was available in the client session, and that the client could print successfully. 2. Printer Management Properties Description With MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, printer management properties are properties associated with auto-created network and client printers. The properties are divided into two categories, drivers and printers. The driver settings determine whether client printers will be auto-created with native drivers, the Citrix Universal Driver, or both. The printer settings determine which options are used to control the client printer for auto-creation.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client system using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the client system and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The client system connected to the MetaFrame server farm. Each setting in MetaFrame printer management properties was checked to verify operability with the HP LaserJet printers and drivers and to ensure that the client could print successfully.

3. Auto-Creation Printers Description With MetaFrame, auto-created printers are defined as those printers attached locally to a server running MetaFrame XP Presentation Server or to a shared printer that was imported from a network print server. When a user logs on to a server farm, the printers that are configured for that user are created in the session automatically without requiring an installation of the printer drivers or printer on the client’s system.

Test Methodology HP LaserJet printers were attached to both MetaFrame XP Presentation Servers and to other servers using parallel cables, or were installed by creating TCP/IP ports and connecting to the printers using JetDirect. These printers were configured for multiple users. Drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The client system connected to the MetaFrame server farm, which verified that the shared HP printers were auto-created in the user’s session and that the client could print successfully to the shared farm printers.

4. DOS Client Printer Management Description MetaFrame XP Presentation Server allows client printers (printers that are locally connected to client devices) to be automatically created for DOS and WinCE Clients. Auto-creation makes these printers available for printing from remote applications that are run in MetaFrame sessions.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client system running DOS using a parallel cable. The printer driver was installed on the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The DOS client connected to the MetaFrame server farm and the creation of the DOS client printer was verified. The client was able to print successfully with HP LaserJet printers and drivers.

5. Client Printer Properties Description Client printer properties are the settings that control the configuration of printers installed on the client system. These settings are configured locally on the client’s desktop. Some of the more common settings are propagated to the autocreated client printer in the user’s session.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client device using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the client system and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. Setting changes were made to the HP LaserJet printer installed locally on the client system, and then the client system connected to the MetaFrame server farm. The settings were propagated and the client was able to print successfully.

6. Client Printer Performance Description High-latency connections can affect printing and printing performance. Client printing performance tests are run to simulate high latency connections and to verify whether jobs print successfully.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client system using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the client system and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. Third-party software was used to simulate a high-latency connection from the client to the MetaFrame server farm. The client connected to the MetaFrame server farm and the client printer was automatically created. The client device was able to print without any issues related to the high-latency connection.

7. Client Printing Description Client printing testing involves basic printing functions on local client printers that are auto-created when a MetaFrame session is launched. For example, when users connect to MetaFrame servers and their local client printers are autocreated in MetaFrame sessions, the client printing test case covers basic printing capabilities.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to a client system using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the client system and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The client system connected to the MetaFrame server farm and auto-creation of the client printer was verified. Various types of documents were printed from programs using multiple fonts and graphics. The client was able to print successfully using HP LaserJet printers and drivers.

8. Printer Driver Compatibility Description Some printer drivers can cause server problems when printing to client printers in the MetaFrame server farm. Printing to a client printer with a problematic driver can result in a fatal system error on the server. Because of this, you might need to prevent the auto-creation of client printers that use specific printer drivers. The printer driver compatibility feature allows you to designate or prohibit drivers for use with client printers.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client system using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the client system and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. In the Management Console for MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, the driver for the HP printer was configured to allow the auto-creation of the client printer using that particular HP driver. The client then connected to the MetaFrame server farm and the auto-creation of the client printer was verified. The client printer was able to print successfully. Subsequently, in the Management Console for MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, the driver for the HP printer was configured to disallow the auto-creation of the client printer using that particular HP driver. The client then connected to the MetaFrame server farm and the client printer was not auto-created. There were no issues with preventing the LaserJet printer from being auto-created.

9. Client Printer Driver Mapping Description When using MetaFrame with ICA Clients, you map printer drivers to identify printer drivers that have different names for the same printer on different Windows platforms. You need to use mapping if the printer drivers installed on MetaFrame XP Presentation Servers have names for client printers different from the drivers used on client systems running Windows 9x.

Test Methodology An HP LaserJet printer was attached to the client system using a parallel cable. The printer was installed on the Windows 9x client system, and drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site and installed on the MetaFrame XP Presentation Server. A printer driver with a different name than the HP driver installed on the server was installed on the client system. The client printer driver was mapped to the HP printer driver installed on the server. The client connected to the MetaFrame server farm and the auto-creation of the client printer was verified. Known Issues with Client Printer Driver Mapping and HP Printers & Drivers No issues were discovered when testing client printer driver mapping with MetaFrame XP Presentation Server using the HP LaserJet printer and driver listed above.

10. Printer Driver Replication

Description To install printer drivers on a MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, use the standard Windows printer installation methods. The Add Printer wizard requests printer information and copies the necessary driver files. You may need to run a Windows installation CD-ROM or media for the printer. When using the wizard to install drivers on a MetaFrame XP Presentation Server, the actual printer is not attached to the server. After you install drivers, use the driver replication feature in the Management Console for MetaFrame XP Presentation Server to copy the driver files and registry settings to other servers in the server farm. Use the replication feature to save time when you install printer drivers, and to ensure that all drivers are available on all servers where ICA Clients need them. Replicating printer drivers in the server farm ensures that the ICA Client users can print to the client and network printers in the farm.

Test Methodology HP LaserJet printers were attached to a MetaFrame XP Presentation Server using parallel cables or were installed by creating a TCP/IP port and connecting to the printer using JetDirect. The printers were configured for multiple domain users. Drivers for the printers were downloaded from the HP Driver Support Web site. The shared printers in the server farm were configured for auto-creation and the HP drivers for the shared MetaFrame XP Presentation Server printers were replicated to other servers in the farm. The client system connected to a MetaFrame XP Presentation Server that did not have HP LaserJet printers attached, but that did have HP drivers replicated to it. The auto-creation of the client printer was verified and the client printer was able to print successfully.

For client printers to be automatically created, the appropriate printer driver must be available on MetaFrame XP servers. The printer driver replication feature aids in printer driver management in MetaFrame XP server farm, however, maintaining drivers for many different printing devices can be challenging. MetaFrame XP Universal Printing is designed to avoid problems with driver maintenance and other client printing issues in diverse environments. A single generic printer driver is used on the server to prepare print jobs. This can be the universal driver for the PostScript (PS) language or the PCL5c or PCL4 variations of the Printer Control Language.
