How to get from Kansai International Airport to Koza Station The following set of instructions and photos will explain how to get yourself from the arrivals area at Kansai International Airport to Koza Station, the train station nearest the symposium venue. For specific train itineraries, please consult the previous document (“Detailed Instructions for Travel…”) posted on the symposium website. If you are traveling from the city of Osaka or Kyoto, you can take a Kuroshio Limited Express train to Koza directly from Kyoto Station or Shin-Osaka station. We recommend doing this if you are staying overnight in Japan before September 26, rather than going all the way back to Kansai Airport (about 1 hour extra travel time.) If you would like help planning this option, please consult the symposium organizers directly. 1. When you exit immigration and customs at Kansai Airport, you will be on the 1st floor. Follow the signs for “Railways”, taking one of the 4 escalators or 3 elevators to get to the 2nd floor.

Once on the 2nd floor, follow the signs to one of several walkways (the most direct ones are the central two) and walk across the road to Kansai-airport Station.

Two train companies use Kansai-airport Station: JR (blue/green) and Nankai (orange). Only JR can take you to Koza. DO NOT use Nankai.

JR  Ticket  Office

Unless you can read Japanese, it is not possible to buy the necessary ticket to Koza from the JR ticket machines. Go to the JR ticket office (there is a huge sign in English overhead).

JR ticket office staff may or may not speak English, but they can read place names and train types written in the Roman alphabet. Use the bilingual form provided on the webpage to purchase your JR ticket. You may receive multiple tickets for each leg of your journey—most likely, you will have one ticket for the full journey (“fare ticket”, the top ticket in the photo) and another ticket for your reserved seat on the Kuroshio Limited Express (“ltd. exp. (reserved)”, the second ticket). If you buy a return ticket at this stage (which we recommend), you will receive

additional tickets. If you need a receipt, ask for a ryōshūsho (領収書; the third “ticket” in the photo). You can write your name in on the line provided.

Now that you have your tickets, go through the blue (JR) ticket gates and take the elevator or stairs down to the platform. (DO NOT go through the orange Nankai gates.)

JR  gates

Two kinds of JR trains depart from Kansai-airport Station. You should take a silver-and-blue colored Rapid train (Kansai Airport Rapid Service; Kankū Kaisoku; 関空快速) bound for Ōsaka, “Ōsaka district”, Kyōbashi, or “Ōsaka Loop Line”. These may leave from either Track 3 or 4,

although they are more likely to leave from Track 3. Use the electronic signs to check which train to board.

DO NOT take a white-and-blue Haruka train (see photo). These are usually bound for Kyōto. They do not stop at Hineno.

Once you are inside the Kansai Airport Rapid Service train, it should look like this:

Take this train to Hineno Station. There is only one stop (Rinkū-town) before Hineno.

The train will arrive at Track 3 or 4, but the next train you need (Kishūji Rapid Service for Wakayama) will depart from the other platform (Tracks 1 or 2), so use the elevators or stairs at either end of the platform to go up and then down onto the next platform.

Use the electronic signs to confirm which track the next Kishūji Rapid Service (Kishūji Kaisoku; 紀州路快速) train is departing from, and from which boarding positions (marked on the pavement with numbers). In the photo, this one is departing from boarding positions 5 through 8.

The Kishūji Rapid Service train will arrive at Hineno joined to a Kansai Airport Rapid Service train but the two trains will separate at the platform; the front half will go ahead first for Kansai-

airport, and about two minutes later the back half (Kishūji Rapid) will depart for Wakayama. For this reason, to board the Kishūji Rapid Service, go to the north (upstream) end of the platform, to the boarding positions indicated on the electronic signs.

(DO NOT take a Kuroshio Limited Express from Hineno. The Kuroshio trains that stop at Hineno do not go as far as Koza.) Once inside the Kishūji Rapid Service train, it will look like this. When we took the train, there was a recorded announcement in English when the train was departing from Hineno, confirming that the train was bound for Wakayama.

The train ride takes about 30 minutes, going through farmland and the mountains, and makes a total of 9 stops; it terminates at Wakayama Station, where you should get off and change trains. The stop before Wakayama is Kii-Nakanoshima. You will probably arrive at Wakayama Station on Tracks 1 or 2.

Use the stairs (either up or down) at either end of the platform to go to Track 4, where the Limited Express Kuroshio train (Tokkyū “Kuroshio”; 特急「くろしお」) will arrive. Follow the signs.

If you have a reserved Kuroshio seat, you will have a seat number assigned. There are also 3 different classes of Kuroshio trains (A, B, and C). Use signs on the pavement and hanging from above to find the train car your seat is in (indicated by an Arabic numeral), so you can board your train. The only English on the signs says “Ltd. Express”.

If you have time, you can buy beverages, snacks, and light meals (sushi or noodles) on the platform. (Beverages and snacks, including alcohol, are also available on the Kuroshio train.) The Kuroshio trains vary in coloration, but they usually have some turquoise and will be marked “limited express” and “for Shingū”.

Once you are on the Kuroshio Limited Express, it should look like this:

The train journey at this point takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. After about half an hour, you will see the Pacific Ocean on the right side of the train.

The train goes through small villages and forest. The last stop before Koza is Kushimoto. DO NOT get off at Kushimoto!

Koza Station looks like this. Get off here, walk to the end of the platform, and go through the station building to the parking lot outside, where a bus will be waiting to pick you up.

If you get lost: Outside of Kansai-airport station, it’s extremely unlikely that JR staff, police officers, or other people will speak any English. However, all JR staff can read place names and proper nouns in the Roman alphabet, so if you write things like “KOZA”, “KUROSHIO”, etc. they will understand. Additionally, signage throughout the JR system is in both English and Japanese. Public telephones are not necessarily common, but JR staff at the fare gates will have access to phones and you can call one of us (David Hembry: 090-9618-0960; Issei Ohshima: 090-89086826; Atsushi Kawakita: 090-9712-4917). On the morning of the 26th, David will be taking the train from Kansai Airport to Koza; Atsushi will be driving from Kyoto to Koza; and Issei will be in Koza setting up the symposium. Kuroshio limited express trains to Koza are about one every 2 hours. (There are other Kuroshio trains that make their final stop at Shirahama, about 1 hour ahead of Koza.) JR staff, even if they are unable to explain to you in English what they are doing, will probably go ahead and change your seat reservation for free or a minimal fee to the next available Kuroshio train if you miss the one you were planning to take. This is by far the simplest option. If you take local trains (which

are less frequent than Kuroshio express trains), it is about 4 hours from Wakayama to Koza, and you will probably have to change trains twice (at Gobō and Shin-Tanabe). If your travel plans change, give us a call and let us know what time you are arriving; we can also speak directly with the JR staff in Japanese. Generally in Japan, it’s not possible to pay for things in any currency other than Japanese yen (e.g., U.S. dollars are not accepted). Credit cards are often not accepted either, although ticket windows at large JR stations (such as Kansai-airport and Wakayama stations) should accept credit cards. Koza Station does not accept credit cards.

Detailed Instructions for Travel from Kansai International Airport (Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture) to the Symposium Venue (Koza, Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture) The welcome dinner begins at 18:00 (6 pm) on September 26. The following is the latest possible train you may take from Kansai Airport in order to arrive at the symposium venue in time for dinner: 12:50 pm Depart Kansai-airport Station, Track 3 Train: Kansai Airport Rapid Service (Kankū-Kaisoku) bound for Tennōji, Ōsaka, and Kyōbashi 13:01 Arrive Hineno Station, Track 3 Change trains (20 minutes to make transfer) 13:21 Depart Hineno Station, Track 1 Train: Kishuji Rapid Service (Kishūji-Kaisoku) bound for Wakayama 13:51 Arrive Wakayama Station, Track 2 Change trains (10 minutes to make transfer) 14:01 Depart Wakayama Station, Track 4 Train: Kuroshio Limited Express (Tokkyū Kuroshio) No. 13 bound for Shingū 16:19 Arrive Koza Station Please be careful to check the destinations of trains you board, since the arrival and departure platforms (tracks) may differ from the ones indicated here. Shuttle buses timed for each train arrival will transport guests from Koza Station to Botan-sō. Things to Watch Out For -

If arriving on September 26 will not allow you to make the train listed above (e.g., if your flight lands at Kansai International Airport after 10:30 am on September 26), please choose a flight that arrives on September 25 and stay overnight in a hotel near Kansai Airport. (We can assist with necessary hotel reservations, so please contact us if you are planning to do this.)

-

Two different train companies (JR West and Nankai Railways) operate out of Kansaiairport Station. Only JR trains go to Koza and the symposium venue. DO NOT take Nankai. The two companies operate separate ticket gates and separate platforms, so please make sure you go through the JR ticket gates towards platform 3.

DO NOT take the Haruka Kansai Airport Express train for Tennōji and Kyōto. It will not stop at Hineno Station and you will not be able to make the necessary transfers. Be sure to take a Kansai Airport Rapid Express train for Tennōji.   - In order to get to the symposium venue near Koza Station, you will have to change trains twice (once at Hineno Station and once at Wakayama Station). Changing trains at Hineno Station: The train from Kansai-airport will arrive on Track 3, so use the elevator or stairs to go up and then back down again onto Track 1. The elevator is in the middle of the platform. Changing trains at Wakayama Station: The Kishuji Rapid Service train from Hineno will arrive on Track 2, so use the elevator or stairs to go up and then back down again onto Track 4 for the Limited Express Kuroshio train. The elevators are at either end of the platform. How to Purchase Tickets: A JR ticket office and JR ticket machines are located facing the JR ticket gates at Kansai-airport Station. You may purchase tickets from the machines (instructions are displayed in either English or Japanese), but it may be more simple to print out and show the following form to the employees in the JR ticket office. You may pay either by credit card or in cash (Japanese yen), and you may purchase either a one-way or round-trip ticket. Because the leg between Wakayama and Koza is a limited express train, you will be charged both for the base fare (“basic fare”) as well as an additional express ticket (“limited express ticket”); for this reason, you may receive 2 paper tickets for this leg of the journey. Kuroshio seats may be reserved for an additional ¥500 if any reservable seats are available. The total for a one-way journey from Kansai-airport to Koza, including a reserved Kuroshio seat, is ¥6,000. Because the return train from Koza to Kansai-airport is not likely to be crowded, we recommend that you purchase a round-trip ticket upon your arrival at Kansai-airport, with a reserved seat for the outgoing ride to Koza on the 26th, but a non-reserved seat for the return journey from Koza. This means you may take any train on the 29th without the need to purchase a return ticket with cash at Koza Station. (This is the fourth option on the last page of this document.) You can purchase a ticket for the return journey (from Koza to Kansai-airport), including both the base fare and express ticket, at Koza Station, but the ticket window there is only open between 7:05 and 16:50 (excluding breaks at 11:25-12:05 and 15:25-15:55), and it is not possible to reserve seats at the Koza ticket window either. It is also NOT possible to use a credit card at the Koza Station ticket window (we called and checked!). If you want to leave Kansai Airport earlier, you may take the following train on the 26th.

10:49 am Depart Kansai-airport Station, Track 3

Train: Kansai Airport Rapid Service (Kankū-Kaisoku) bound for Tennōji, Ōsaka, and Kyōbashi 11:00 am Arrive Hineno Station, Track 3 Change trains (9 minutes to make transfer) 11:09 am Depart Hineno Station, Track 1 Train: Kishuji Rapid Service (Kishūji-Kaisoku) bound for Wakayama 11:40 am Arrive Wakayama Station, Track 2 Change trains (20 minutes to make transfer) 12:00 pm Depart Wakayama Station, Track 4 Train: Kuroshio Limited Express (Tokkyū Kuroshio) No. 9 bound for Shingū 14:19 Arrive Koza Station

There are plenty of places to eat food in Kansai Airport outside of the security area (particularly on the 2nd and 3rd floors).
