Why is Software So Expensive?

After all … all it is, is a CD with information burned onto it!… and how much does a blank writable CD cost? Obviously creating and developing software is time consuming and requires brains and effort, but still … does some it have to cost quite so much as it does? Take, for example a very popular program, Adobe CS4 Web Premium. This piece of software currently retails at $2170 (US)! For further comparison, here is a list of the top 10 best selling consumer software products (Source: Amazon) : 1. Microsoft Office: Home & Student 2. Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium Upgrade) 3. Quickbooks Pro 2009 4. Norton Internet Security 2009 5. Norton 360.3 6. Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 7. Norton Antivirus 2009 8. Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 Standard 9. “How to Get Free Software Forever”

The point is clear! Buying quality software on a tight budget in these troubled economic times are no laughing matter. Imagine a student, already living frugally, who needs one or more of these programs for course work and research. Surely there must be a case here for claiming that the honest consumer is getting a raw deal! However, is there any realistic alternative to paying the high prices being asked for by software manufacturers? When it comes to decent software for your PC, MAC or mobile phone, is there such a thing as “free lunch”? In this report, I intend to show that the answer is definitely …. YES! What is more, I will show you step by step how to get your hands on quality software and information products for FREE, completely legally and with minimal effort on your part. Your time investment, reading this publication could literally save you hundreds of dollars in future software costs. INTERESTED? … then read on!

Why “Peer to Peer” File Sharing is Not an Option!

Of coarse, many of you may be thinking …”why should I pay ANYTHING for software when I can download what I need for free from the multitude of “peer to peer” file sharing networks? Although this may appear to be an attractive option from an economic standpoint, it is an alternative that is fraught with danger. Obviously downloading copyrighted software on “peer to peer” networks is ILLEGAL! For years many consumers viewed downloading famous branded software products as a risk worth taking … but the situation is changing fast.

Page 5

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

A recent posting on the FBI website, under the heading “Investigative Programs and Cyber Investigations” issued these stark warnings to the casual illegal downloader: “The FBI has undertaken a new initiative regarding the use of Peer to Peer systems on the internet. While the FBI supports and encourages the development of new technology, it also must take action regarding its misuse for illicit and in some cases criminal purposes. It is a violation of federal law to distribute copyrighted music, movies, software, games and other works without authorization. There are important national economic consequences associated with such theft. The FBI has asked industry associations and companies that are particularly concerned with intellectual property rights to report to the FBI for possible criminal investigation and prosecution anyone that they have reason to believe is violating federal copyright laws”. The article goes on to list various punitive steps the FBI intends taking in the future. Clearly, “peer to peer” file sharing is a none starter from a legal perspective. However there are other serious dangers. “Peer to Peer” networks have become a favourite haunt for hackers and cyber criminals. Because these systems potentially expose your computer and files to millions of other users on a network, they also expose your computer to cyber threats such as “worms” and viruses. In fact many worms and viruses are specially written to be spread by “Peer to Peer” networks. Also, if “Peer to Peer” software is not properly configured you can unknowingly open up the contents of your entire hard drive for others to see. Private confidential information could be seen and downloaded. NOT AN ATTRACTIVE OPTION!

Free Software Forever!

Clearly, in our pursuit of budget, affordable software, we do not want to expose ourselves to potential criminal investigation or cyber disaster at the hands of malicious hackers! So how can you get your hands on lovely FREE software forever, safely and legally? If there’s one thing we love about the internet, its all the excellent stuff we can enjoy for free. When it comes to decent software for your PC, MAC or mobile phone, the web proves that money isn’t everything. Of course, you can pay for expensive PC fixing tools, security protection and other software if you really want to, but there are plenty of fantastic, comparable alternatives for free … you just need to know where to look. The rest of this book will show you some of the best online sources for a wide range of powerful and entirely legal free software. Programs range from older versions of commercially available products and sophisticated open source applications to mobile ring tones and complete games. You’ll never have to fork out for software again!

Download Directories

The cost conscious software consumer, should always view “Download Directories” as an “Aladdin’s cave” of quality digital delights! Whether you looking for a particular program or just browsing to see what’s on offer, these free software sites should always be your first port of call. Here are my Top Five favorite “Download Directory” sites:

1. Download.com www.download.com Used by millions of web users daily to find the best programs currently available at the lowest possible cost. Many developers opt to post their programs directly to the site, rather than going to the effort and expense of hosting the files themselves. It offers everything from freeware to trial software and files are all fully checked before they’re added to the site, so you don’t have to worry about Spyware, Trojans or other cyber nasties infecting your PC. Downloads are fast and reliable too.

Page 8

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” Major programs are reviewed by the editors and users can rate and comment on them too, which gives you an idea of how good something is before you download it. The website includes all the details you need about each file, including its license (free, free to try, purchase etc), size and the publishers website. Don’t miss the blog : http://news.cnet.com/cheapskate/?tag=nl.e796 … loads of great bargains here!

2. SnapFiles www.snapfiles.com

Originally called “WebAttack,” SnapFiles has been providing freeware and shareware downloads since 1997. The site offers weekly highlights and software showcases (themed recommendations) and its easy to browse the latest software and updates, view featured releases and editor picks, or just explore the available categories. Page 9

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

You can use the tabbed interface to switch between shareware and freeware programs and there are useful features and tips to help you manage your PC and keep it secure. Programs are hosted on SnapFiles and are rated and reviewed by the sites editors and other users. There’s usually a brief description of the software, a screenshot or two and full product details, including the publisher, size and suggested alternatives.

3. Nonags www.nonags.com

This site only offers fully functional software with no limitations (on time or features) that’s free of in-built ads nagging you to upgrade to paid-for “pro editions” (hence the name). These include Avast 4 Home, CDBurner XP and Quick Media Converter.

Page 10

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

The sites layout has a distinctly Nineties feel. Its very basic with the options on the left and the latest freeware (across all categories) displayed down the middle. You can browse the collection by category or use the search box to track down a particular program. Some of the features, such as the top user – rated and most-viewed lists, are only available to paid members – subscriptions cost $18 (about £12) for one year and $47.97 (£31.50) for a lifetime. Members can download programs directly from Nonags, while non-members are restricted to downloading them from the original authors site.

4. FileHippo.com www.filehippo.com

Like Nonags, this site looks a bit stale by modern standards but it has lots of terrific free content. You can view the latest and most popular downloads, and browse through the various categories on offer directly from the homepage. Click the “View More” link in any of the sections to see a full list of the software they contain. As well as providing downloads of the latest version of a program, FileHippo.com offers links to previous releases, including different build milestones. For Google Chrome, for example, there are already nine variants of the 2.0 beta available. FileHippo.com also offers a handy, optional update checker that scans your hard disk for installed freeware and provides direct links to any newer versions available on the site. Page 11

5. MajorGeeks.com http://majorgeeks.com

MajorGeeks.com is a great download site, packed with useful tools to help you get the most out of your computer. It hosts a mix of freeware and shareware, as well as the latest definitions for programs like Norton Anti Virus and AdAware. The site is similar in layout to NoNags – the latest releases are displayed in the centre of the screen with files sorted into categories on the left hand side. MajorGeeks.com focuses on programs for tweaking, enhancing and securing your system. There are all-in-one suites, benchmarking programs, BIOS utilities, driver tools and Registry cleaners available … and that’s just for starters! The site also has a decent selection of programs for Macs.

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

Limited Offers This is where the fun really starts! Software developers and publishers sometimes give away full programs … but you need to be quick to avoid disappointment. Grab a bargain from these sites:

1. Giveaway of the Day www.giveawayoftheday.com

This useful site does exactly what its name suggests. It gives away one piece of licensed software for free, every day. Each program is only available for 24 hours and once its gone, its gone … although popular choices do occasionally reappear. Most of the titles on offer aren’t exactly household names – DHTML Menu 9.2, LeaderTask 6.4 and Flash Decompiler Trillex for example … but the site offers an interesting mix of applications with the occasional “must have” such as the commercial versions of Glary Utilities or Wise Registry Cleaner.

Page 13 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

2. MoneySavingExpert.com http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com

Although its not a download site, the MoneySavingExpert.com forums regularly include links to software giveaways and competitions, as well as to thousands of other money saving offers. You can browse the various boards (“Freebies is a good place to start) or search them all.

Past examples of free software giveaways include Aconis Backup 10, Speedball 2 and Paragon Drive Backup.

There are always plenty of links to recommended freeware too.

Open Source Resources “Open Source” by definition “describes a broad general type of software that makes source code available to the general public with relaxed or non-existent copyright restrictions. It is an explicit “feature” of open source that it may put no restrictions on the use or distribution by any organization or user”. (Definition from “Wikipedia”) In plain English, anyone can look at or make improvements to Open Source software, so it’s generally very stable … and best of all … its FREE! Here are my recommendations of some of the best Open Source sites:

1. SourceForge.net http://sourceforge.net

Page 15

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” SourceForge.net is the best known Open Source resource and is home to more than 230,000 free software projects. It provides developers with storage, as well as handy tools for sharing and managing their creations. Click the “find software” link on the main screen and you can browse the list of the most popular programs, either from the past seven days or of all time. There are plenty of big names hosted on the site including Azureus Vuze, emule, 7-Zip and Audacity. Click a program title to view the latest news, details and activity … or download the most recent release. A lot of projects are designed for multiple platforms, so you’ll need to make sure you select the right version for your operating system. As well as browsing the list, the site lets you search for programs and filter the results in a number of ways, depending on your preference.

2. Osalt.com www.osalt,com

Page 16

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” The aim of this site is to help you find Open Source alternatives to commercial programs. The software directory contains a list of popular products such as Adobe Photoshop, Corel Draw and Symantec Norton AntiVirus. It also covers free proprietary software including Internet Explorer and Windows Live Messenger. Click the name of a program and Osalt.com will tell you a little about it, list the operating systems its available for and provide a link to the developers site. Underneath all this will be suggestions for similar Open Source tools. Select Norton AntiVirus, for example and Osalt.com will recommend ClamWin, Clam AntiVirus and Winpooch. Internet Explorers suggested replacements include Firefox and Chrome.

3. Open Source Mac www.opensourcemac.org

Page 17 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” This is a simple list of Open Source software for Mac OS X, laid out over two pages. Scroll through the collection and click a files download link to be taken to the publishers site. The software isn’t hosted on Open Source Mac itself and the link won’t take you directly to the download – you’ll need to browse for that yourself. The site is particularly useful for new Mac owners keen to find out what free programs are available. The list is broken down into categories and includes software such as Firefox, MacLibre (a pack of open source software), RSSOwl and Q Emulator (which lets you run Windows programs at full speed).

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

Classic Games Some hugely popular games from yesteryear have now been released as freeware. Revisit old favourites or discover treasures that you missed the first time around.

1.Game-Remakes.com www.game-remakes.com

Given its name, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this site features remade versions of popular titles from the past. That’s generally not the case, however. The majority of the games here are actually originals with a retro feel to them. There are arcade games, puzzlers, card and RPGs available to download. Most of the titles on offer at Game-Remakes.com are actually demo versions – fully playable, but limited in some way (each game has a link you can use to buy the full version). That said, there are lots of games to choose from, including ones for Macs and many of them are available to play online. Favorites include Airport Mania: First Flight (a game many iPhone / iPod Touch users will be familiar with), Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst and Worms 2.

Page 19

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

3. Abandonia www.abandonia.com

“Abandonware” sites such as Abondonia feature old games that are no longer sold or supported or whose ownership is in doubt. Abandonia only hosts games that have been genuinely abandoned or forgotten about and will immediately remove anything from the site should the (proven) copyright holder request it. You can search for titles or browse the various categories.

4. Wikipedia http://tinyurl.com/wikigames

Page 20

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

Now you might be surprised and wondering why I’m including everyone’s favorite user-created encyclopedia in an article about free games? Well, Wikipedia has a section devoted to commercial video games that have been released as freeware (link above). The list also includes games that were made available temporarily but have since been withdrawn. This being Wikipedia, each name in the list links to its entry on the site rather than directly to a download location. So if you want to try one of the games, you’ll need to go to its page first and then follow an external link.

5. Remain in Play www.remaininplay.com

Page 21

© Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” Remain in play is another site that features a list of commercial games that have been released for free. The site provides useful information, such as when the games first went on sale, along with the titles genre and language. The programs aren’t hosted on the web site itself, but the links do take you directly to the download page on the relevant developer / publisher’s site. You can sort the list of games by name, data type, genre and operating system (OS), search for the title you want or try one of the top ten suggestions.

Portable Software There are a growing number of applications designed to run directly off a USB flash drive so you can take them wherever you go. Stock up on free portable software here!

1. PortableApps.com http://portableapps.com

This great site is packed with portable versions of all the best programs including Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org and the GIMP. You can download the various applications separately or opt for a suite (light or standard) which contains a selection of the best software, together with a built in menu and a back up tool. Page 23 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

If you’d prefer to create your own suite, you can just download the platform menu and back up app and add the programs yourself. The Portable Apps site also contains a collection of test releases to try (alpha and beta versions of apps), although they’re not intended for everyday use.

2. The Portable Freeware Collection www.portablefreeware.com

While not as polished as PortableApps, this site offers a large collection of conveniently packaged programs including Firefox, OpenOffice.org, CCleaner and QTorrent. It’s laid out like a blog with the latest releases posted on a regular basis and a feed you can subscribe to if you wish. You can search for software (enter your own terms or select one of the popular searches) or browse the full collection. It’s a good site, although it does occasionally suffer from capacity problems.

3. Coolgorilla.com www.coolgorilla.com

This site has a decent collection of self – developed applications and games for the Apple iPhone/ iPod Touch and other mobiles. The iPhone apps include talking phrasebooks (French, German, Japanese and more) and a London Travel Guide, all available through iTunes but moderately priced rather than free. The talking phrasebooks for the iPod are free but everything else, including the games comes with a price tag. There’s no charge for the sites mobile phone content, though, which includes phrasebooks, games and other apps. You can either download the content to your computer and transfer it to your phone or access Coolgorilla’s cool mobile site www.coolgorilla.mob from your handset.

Old Versions If the latest version of a program is causing you problems, or is simply not as good (in your opinion) as a past release, find out what the previous generation had to offer.

1. OldVersion.com www.oldversion.com

Sites really don’t come much simpler than this! Old version.com currently offers more than 2,800 versions of 190 popular applications including MSN and Yahoo Messenger, Windows Media Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Winamp. You can search for a particular application or pick the one you want from the categories list. Select iTunes under Multimedia, for example, to display download links to 26 previous versions of Apple’s popular music software, starting with iTunes 4.2 (4.1 is listed but the link goes to a 404 error page) right the way up to iTunes 8.0.0.35. Old version.com conveniently lists the file sizes of the various versions which can be interesting in itself. For example, early releases of iTunes weighed in at a svelte 19.1 MB while the latest edition on the site is a much heftier 74 MB!

2. FreeSerifSoftware www.freeserifsoftware.com

No prizes for guessing what’s on offer on this particular site! FreeSerifSoftware does exactly what it says by letting you download free versions of older Serif programs. There are five applications currently available on the site – PhotoPlus SE, PagePlus SE, WebPlus SE, Drawplus 4 and 3D Plus 2. Click the download button underneath a program to be given the chance to buy the latest version for $15 (US) … just ignore this if you want to stick with the free edition. The software requires a key to work so you’ll need to register on the site using a valid email address.

Freeware Blogs Recommendations from reliable sources are an excellent way to find software that you might otherwise miss. Here are some of my favourite sources of freeware tips.

1. Lifehacker www.lifehacker.com

This brilliant blog is updated several times a day with tech tips sourced from all over the web, many of which recommend free programs. The software covered ranges from fun stuff such as Desktop themes and browser addons to productivity tools and office suites, with an emphasis on the latest and most innovative applications.

Page 30 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” The site also benefits from its loyal, knowledgeable community which leaves dozens of comments on each post. You can rest assured that if a particular program doesn’t meet the standards of Lifehacker users, then everyone will know about it! For the sheer variety and freshness of its content, this is an invaluable bookmark for free software seekers.

2. Freewaregenius www.freewaregenius.com

Page 31 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever” “Some day all software will be free” proclaims the optimistic tagline of this blog, though such a development might put it out of business! Freeware genius offers a daily dose of fantastic freebies and is as eclectic as it is trustworthy in its recommendations. Last time I visited, it had just reviewed the excellent music player “Songbird”, the registry cleaner “PowerTools Lite”, a PDF converter, a system performance monitor and many other great programs. You can subscribe to the blogs RSS feed (which has more than 14,000 readers) and check out the list of the 20 top rated free programs.

3. Best Freeware Blog http://bestfreewareblog.com

This blog specializes in free programs that you wouldn’t necessarily hear about elsewhere. This doesn’t mean its recommendations are rubbish but they are often new or too quirky to have caught the attention of the mainstream software sites. Certainly worth checking out once in a while.

Page 32 © Steve Searle – All Rights Reserved

“How to Get Free Software Forever”

A Word of Caution

All the sites I’ve featured in this report are trustworthy and you shouldn’t have any problems with the content you download from them. However other free software resources you may stumble across on the web may not be as conscientious. Content filtering browser plug-ins such as McAfee Site Advisor and AVG Linkscanner (above) will flag up dodgy sites and search results to prevent you from accidentally downloading anything potentially hazardous. However, beware that neither tool is 100% accurate and will sometimes mark a site as “red” (dangerous) for containing a link to a dubious download that has since been removed. To be on the safe side, always make sure your anti-virus software is fully up to date and scan every file you download before opening or installing it. Just right click the download and select the scan option you want from the context menu.
