W H AT M A K E S FA M I LY L E G A C Y U N I Q U E When speaking with friends and family on why they should sponsor a child through Family Legacy, use these talking points to explain the quality of the ministry and specifically, our Child Sponsorship Program. STEWARDSHIP Ninety four percent of every dollar received goes directly to ministry programs, while two to three percent is used for administrative costs, and the rest is used for fundraising.

ACCOUNTABILITY America’s leading independent charity evaluators Charity Navigator and GuideStar have both given their highest ratings to Family Legacy in the areas of finance and accountability. Every financial review by independent auditors have revealed NO suggestions for process or accountability improvements.

EDUCATION Many organizations are involved in educating children in Africa, but most do so in partnership with local community schools – which may or may not deliver the quality education the kids need. In contrast, Family Legacy owns and operates its own private, Christian academies in 17 communities throughout Lusaka, Zambia. The hallmarks of these schools are:

• Extended time in school compared to other local schools •L ow student-to-teacher ratios, which average 25-30 students per class • Quality school facilities growing each year • S pecialized curriculum designed to boost children’s understanding of core subject areas, especially math, phonics, and reading comprehension •A dvanced teacher training from visiting American instructors as well as educational organizations such as Capturing Kids’ Hearts and Tutor Kids Network • Free, nutritious lunches which improve students’ ability to learn and boost their immune systems, while protecting them from the malnutrition and stunting that is so common among children in Zambia • Spiritual development which engages not only the minds but also the hearts of our students through our DiscipleOne program, a specialized discipleship curriculum developed in partnership with David C. Cook Publishers specifically for children in a Third World environment

FOCUS Family Legacy is committed to working in Zambia only. By doing so, we are maximizing the strategic impact we can have on its children and the transformation that will take place in that nation.

SCOPE Though our focus is narrow, our vision is far-reaching. Through our NEXT 50 Movement, we are looking ahead to the next half-century of Zambia (to its centennial anniversary in 2064) and how we can bring about systematic, lasting change by raising up its next generation of leaders. We are confident that the future presidents, officials and community leaders will be among the students who graduate from our schools in the decades to come.

answers

F R E Q U E N T LY A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S Q: W hat does a sponsorship provide? A: A sponsorship through Family Legacy provides a full scholarship for an orphan child to attend one of our private, Christian academies. At our schools, our qualified teaching staff and low teacher-tostudent ratio provide an education that is above and beyond what these children would normally be able to receive. In addition, sponsored children receive a daily, hot lunch and regular Biblical instruction from our Bible teachers and social workers.

Q: Is there a preferred donation method for sponsorship? A: Yes! Bank drafts are the best way to donate for your sponsorship since the processing fees for the ministry are a fraction of the cost of credit card fees. Plus, bank accounts change less frequently than credit cards, requiring less follow up – and that means our staff can focus more time on what we love doing most: caring for the orphans.

Q: When will a sponsorship end? A: A sponsorship will end if the sponsor chooses to end the sponsorship or when a child finishes his or her education. Our goal is for every one of our students to graduate high school (12th grade). After graduation, there are opportunities for further study in a trades, college, or university program through our Excel Beyond Scholarship Program. We want our children to go as far as their sponsors are willing to take them!

Q: W hat happens to my child if I stop sponsoring him or her? A: If you find yourself in a situation where you are unable to continue your sponsorship, we ask you to help us find a new sponsor among your friends, family, and acquaintances. We will be happy to assist you in this process and work with you to identify a new sponsor.

Q: Can a sponsor write to their child?

Q: W hat reasons might Family Legacy have for discharging a student from the sponsorship program?

A: Yes! To write a letter to a sponsored child, simply login to your Family Legacy account at familylegacy.com/sponsorlogin.

A: A lthough we strive to keep each and every child in our program, there are a handful of policies that must be adhered to if

From there, select “My Sponsorships” and click the link to send a message to your child. It will be greatly enjoyed!

Q: Can a sponsor send gifts to their child? A: While a sponsor cannot send a gift via mail or through a Family Legacy staff member, we welcome and encourage sponsors to hand deliver a gift to their sponsored child via a child sponsorship trip connected to one of our mission trip opportunities. Due to the hands-on approach of our ministry, we provide opportunities for sponsors to personally visit their children on a sponsorship trip, spend time with them and give a gift in person. A sponsorship trip is the only time a child can receive a gift.

Q: Where does my money go?

the child and caretaker wish to remain recipients of our services: caretaker and child refusal, moving out of service area, consistently low attendance, and pregnancy or marriage.

Q: Will my sponsorship rate increase as my child gets older? A: Yes – the amount of hours in school, classroom resources and types of classes alter as your child progresses in his or her education. Think of what is available to children in the United States. We strive to offer the same caliber of resources to your child in Zambia. Extra tutoring lessons, science and computer labs, additional text books and well-qualified teachers are unheard of in Zambia. But for your child in our sponsorship program, they are of the norm as he or she moves up in school.

A: Your donations support the overall operations of our Child Sponsorship Program. While your donations do not go directly to your child (in accordance with IRS guidelines), they do allow your child to participate and receive all the benefits of the program (education, food and discipleship) that are provided to every child in the program. 6

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

Pray

Wear It

Pray for your kids and for the people He has ordained to sponsor them. Pray for open doors to share their stories and the ability to clearly communicate their need. Pray for boldness to share when the opportunity arises!

Wear a Camp Life bangle or t-shirt to prompt conversation. It is amazing how God will use something as simple as that to start up a conversation with someone about your kids in Zambia.

Backpacks Contact each person who donated money for a backpack and share the photo and story of “their child” who received that specific backpack they paid for. Let them know what a blessing it will be to that child and how they can further bless him or her through sponsorship.

Business Cards Print cards with the link to your ambassador page and a picture of your kids. You can have 100 business cards printed and shipped to you for less than $15 at www. vistaprint.com. They are small and easy to fit in your purse or wallet to give out when you begin to discuss Camp Life and your children.

One-On-One Set up one-on-one meetings (lunch, coffee, etc.) with friends and family to share about your trip and the kids in your group. Share about the need for sponsorship – and don’t be afraid to ask! Remember, you are giving them the opportunity to gain greater significance.

Backgrounds

Church

Set your screen on your laptop, phone, or iPad to a photo of you with your kids at Camp Life. Let it spark a conversation with whoever sees it.

Share about your trip and transformational experience at Camp Life in your small group, Sunday school class, etc. Talk about how your life was changed by your trip and how THEY now have the opportunity to change the life of a child through sponsorship.

Small Brochures Utilize the small brochures we have provided. Flip to the back page and fill out your information before you give each brochure away.

Print off a photo of a child from your Camp Life group and insert it in the pocket.

Parties Host a dinner or dessert party in your home and share about the need for sponsorship.

Social Media and Email Use social media outlets like Facebook or Instagram to post stories and pictures of your children. Send out an “I’m home from Zambia” email and include the video of your week at Camp Life and the link to your kids on our website.

THE DO’S OF SPONSORSHIP

Do pray. Prayer is a vital part of the process and cannot be underestimated or overlooked.

Do set up as many face-to-face appointments as possible. Set up meetings in a one-on-one or small group format. Generic asks (in front of a large audience or on social networks) can be somewhat effective, but oftentimes the “personal touch” of a direct invitation can have the greatest impact.

Do cast a wide net. Don’t leave anybody out and deny them the opportunity to sponsor one of your kids. You may be surprised at who agrees to sponsor – they just need the invitation from you!

Do make it personal. Don’t just talk about your kids in general. Mention one or two names specifically, share their stories (in as much detail as possible), show photos, and talk about the difference that sponsorship can make in their lives. Mention the marked difference you personally saw with the sponsored kids in your group in comparison to the children who were not yet sponsored.

Do mention the distinctive qualities of our sponsorship program and ministry. View “What Makes Family Legacy Unique” for specific details.

Do examine your spheres of influence. You have a unique set of relationships that no one else does. Is there an organization you belong to? A club or social circle? Think and pray about your relationships and how to leverage them to engage as many people as possible to sponsor your kids.

Do check out your toolbox. What resources do you have at your disposal to use to get your kids sponsored? A Facebook or Instagram account? A business or other platform that you can use to share your kids’ stories? Consider the unique tools that you have to get your kids sponsored.

Do be creative! One family of Camp Life ambassadors puts on an annual talent show to promote sponsorships for their kids – with overwhelming success! How can you use YOUR God-given talents and abilities to get your kids sponsored?

Do check out our sponsorship FAQs for more information. The answers to many sponsorship-related questions are found on the FAQs page. Review it BEFORE you launch your sponsorship campaign so that you will know the answers ahead of time!

guidance

THE DON’TS OF SPONSORSHIP

Don’t get discouraged. When people you are “sure” will want to sponsor kids decline to do so, do not get discouraged! Remember, God’s selection and timing of the right people to sponsor is perfect. Your job is to remain faithful to sharing and spreading the word!

Don’t assume. Do not assume that someone will “definitely” sponsor a child (see above) or that someone would NOT want to sponsor. You never know until you ask.

Don’t procrastinate. The deadline for sponsorships is Oct. 3rd, so don’t want until the last week of September to start looking for sponsors. Begin the process NOW and allow yourself time to meet, talk, and follow up with as many people as possible.

Don’t make unrealistic promises to potential sponsors. Do not say, “Your child will write you a letter every week” or “Your child will get free health care because of your sponsorship”. Be sure to refer to the FAQs page to find out exactly what is being offered to your child through a sponsorship at the Legacy Academy.

Don’t underestimate the importance of your role in these children’s lives. Remember, you are the only one advocating for them. Take advantage of the opportunity you have to make a lasting impact on their lives by getting them sponsored.

Don’t hesitate to contact Family Legacy. If you have any questions, challenges, struggles, etc. you may contact us at any time. We want to help you through this process by giving you all of the tools, encouragement, and prayer you need to find sponsors for all of your children.

Don’t forget that He is with you every step of the way. “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). God is transforming your life and the lives of your kids. Be bold, trust Him, act in faith and watch what He will do!

Don’t be shy! You are the only one advocating for the children in your group. Remember that people you know need to be connected to God’s heart through the life of an orphan child. Don’t withhold that blessing in their lives because of shyness or fear of rejection. Your courageous act can change the life of a child forever.

SLIDE #3 Talking Points:

SLIDE #6 Talking Points:

• Family Legacy’s mission to transform the nation of Zambia is carried out through three main ministries: Camp Life, which I attended this summer; the Legacy Academy Child Sponsorship Program, which is why I am meeting with you today; and the Tree of Life Children’s Village, where some of the most vulnerable orphans in Zambia live full-time with Family Legacy.

• There are actually four types of orphans, as well as vulnerable children.

SLIDE #4 Talking Points:

SLIDE #7 Talking Points:

• Family Legacy works only in Zambia and specifically in the capital city of Lusaka. • Family Legacy’s President and CEO Greer Kendall was born in Zambia to missionary parents and lived there until he was 6 years old. • He later returned and was exposed to the orphan crisis. The Lord led him to begin Family Legacy.

• This summer I went to Zambia with Family Legacy to participate in Camp Life.

SLIDE #5 Talking Points:

SLIDE #8 Talking Points:

• In this country of 15 million people, over one million of its children are orphans. • As you can see from the population pyramids, it is a nation of children.

• Children come to Camp Life from slums in the capital city of Lusaka, Zambia. • The kids in my group were from a slum community called: ___________________. • The children ride buses to the Legacy Center, Family Legacy’s conference center on the outskirts of the city.

17

18

SLIDE #9 Talking Points:

SLIDE #12-15 Talking Points:

• Explain how it felt to meet your kids for the first time. • What were your thoughts when you saw them for the first time as they got off the bus?

• Play your video from your week at Camp Life! • Insert your personal photos into the presentation and explain what is going on in each photo.

SLIDE #10 Talking Points:

SLIDE #16 Talking Points:

• The theme this year at Camp Life was HOPE. • The verse we discussed throughout the week was Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” • I met with each child individually many times throughout the week to learn more about their lives and what their dreams are.

• I am here with you today because I want to get each and every child in my group sponsored through the Legacy Academy Child Sponsorship Program. • It is different from other sponsorship programs because it provides a FULL scholarship to attend a private, Christian school. • Children in this program also receive a hot, nutritious lunch every school day and Christian discipleship.

SLIDE #11 Talking Points:

SLIDE #17 Talking Points:

• Each day all of the American counselors, like me, and their group of 10 kids met for a time of singing, dancing, skits and prayer time as a group. • We then gathered in our small groups to discuss the lesson. • Explain how you saw children transformed.

• When you sponsor a child in my group, they will attend a Legacy Academy, one of Family Legacy’s privately owned and operated schools.

19

20

SLIDE #18 Talking Points:

SLIDE #21 Talking Points:

• Your sponsorship of a child in my group is providing the best education possible! • Think of it this way, it is like taking a child who would ordinarily attend a terrible school and enrolling them in the best school in our city.

• Most of the kids in my group only eat one time a day and typically a food called nshima, which is similar to cornmeal. • They are fed every day at school and can receive additional food blessings to bring home if they have high attendance.

SLIDE #19 Talking Points:

SLIDE #22 Talking Points:

• Point to where your children will attend school.

• Did you have a child in your group who was already in school? Explain the difference between him or her and a child in your group who was not sponsored.

SLIDE #20 Talking Points:

SLIDE #23-30 Talking Points:

• The children in my group are often abused at home, unwanted and in need of Christ. • At school they have specific Bible class that teaches them the Word of God.

• Use your notes from Blessing Times. Fill in the information for each child. • Download the photos of each child from your ambassador login page and insert into each page.

21

SLIDE #31 Talking Points: • Show your friends and family how to sponsor your kids! • Go to web.familylegacy.com/ give and walk them through the process.

SLIDE #32 Talking Points: • Thank your audience once again for coming and listening. • Close in prayer.
