How the World Works: Global Perspectives Phi Theta Kappa Missouri Region Honors Institute 2016

July 22-24, 2016 Westminster College Fulton, Missouri

Missouri...Where it All Began! Welcome! Phi Theta Kappa traces its beginnings to a Society that originated with six charter members under the name of Kappa Phi Omicron at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1910. At a meeting of the presidents of the Missouri junior colleges for women in 1918, it was decided to organize a new honorary society, chapters of which would have a common character, stand, and similarity of organization. The eight charter colleges of Phi Theta Kappa were Hardin, Stephens, Christian, Lindenwood, Cottey, Howard Payne, William Woods, and Central. The alpha chapter was established at Hardin College, but was later moved to Stephens College when Hardin College became a baccalaureate granting institution. The Epsilon Chapter of Cottey College is the only remaining active charter chapter. By 1926, Phi Theta Kappa expanded beyond the borders of Missouri and into coeducational institutions. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges. Membership is organized into four Divisions. Each division contains various Regions. And within each Region are various numbers of chapters found in each state of the United States, Canada, Germany, Peru, U.S. Territories, British Virgin Islands, Republic of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, United Arab Emirates, and the Marshall Islands. Missouri Region is divided into three Districts, Phi, Theta, and Kappa, and is proud to be the home of 27 chapters.

Meet the Missouri Regional Officers Vice President of Communication Tye Hale My name is Tye Hale. I am 20 years old and a 2014 graduate from Mountain Grove High School. I am currently enrolled in Ozarks Technical Community College working on my Associates of Arts degree and am a member of the Alpha Psi Tau chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. After graduating from OTC, I plan on transferring to a four-year university to pursue a Masters in Psychology. My favorite foods are pizza, steamed broccoli, cashew chicken, and homemade pasta. A few of my hobbies include swimming, lifting weights, and playing guitar. I am happy to be the Vice President of Communication and look forward to serving the Missouri Region to the best of my abilities. Vice President of Phi District Justuss Golden I am currently attending Blue River Community College in Independence, MO. In the fall of 2015 I was inducted into my local chapter, Alpha Pi Sigma. In spring of 2016, I had the honor of being elected Vice President of Phi District of the Missouri Region. I will be graduating in the spring of 2017 and plan to transfer to UMKC to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in preparation for law school. I place high value on an honest day’s work and take pride in my work ethic. I look forward to serving the members of the Missouri Region with my fellow regional officers. Vice President of Theta District Nora Browne I am currently attending Ozarks Technical College (OTC) in Springfield, Missouri. I joined Phi Theta Kappa in the Spring of 2015 and have been very active in the organization ever since. I am currently serving as President of our chapter, Alpha Psi Tau. I plan to graduate from OTC in the Spring of 2017 and transfer to Missouri State University. There, I plan to pursue a degree in special education. I have been working for the past five years as a teacher’s aide in a school for autism. This experience has influenced my dream to become a special education teacher in a middle school. I am very excited to serve the Missouri Region in the coming year. If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me. I want to help in any way I can. Vice President of Kappa District Rashell McDermott I attend Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri, where I am president of the Xi Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. I plan to get my nursing degree at Jeffco, then transfer to a University to major in Biology, while getting my BSN in nursing. I have been homeschooled most of my life and recently graduated from high school. After college, I plan to be a marine biologist or forensic scientist, and use my Nursing degree to do volunteer medical work in developing countries. In addition to Phi Theta Kappa, I am involved in multiple campus organizations and am a student senator. In my spare time, I enjoy acting in plays, spending time with my family, singing, playing piano and viola, and cosplaying.

Maggie Harris and Tom Wells Ghost Tour Guides Missouri State Penitentiary

Maggie Harris and her ex-husband bought a haunted house in 2008. Crazy things started happening as soon as they were in the home. Maggie would go to work and tell her co-workers new stories from the night before. Eventually, one of her co-workers said, "I know some people that have formed a paranormal group in Jefferson City. Here's a name and number." The paranormal group came and investigated the home. One of the team members was working with the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau to begin ghost tours at Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP). Maggie eagerly accepted the invitation to be part of the tours. While compiling the ghost tours, the Convention and Visitors Bureau directed the group to meet with Tom Wells, an officer that had worked at the Penitentiary, and two inmates. Tom and one of the inmates shared the same story: It was about 3 p.m. at MSP in the Clothing Factory. 3 p.m. was count time. All the inmates know to stay put during count time. An inmate with long, blonde hair and a white t-shirt walked right past Tom and an inmate worker, then walked right out of the building. Tom ran outside and didn't see the inmate anywhere. He ran down to each end of the building to ask each officer positioned in the guard tower if they had seen anyone trying to escape. They each answered no. There was a van parked in front of the building. Tom began looking under the van, opened the doors, but still couldn't find the person he had so clearly seen just a few seconds earlier. The inmate Tom had been talking to came outside and said, "Wells, you ain't gonna find that guy." Tom said, "What guy?" The inmate responded, "Long, blonde hair, white t-shirt. We don't have anybody in here that looks like that!" Tom reported the incident to his superiors.

This story has been told on a Ghost Hunters episode filmed at MSP, on Ghost Adventures, and most recently on Ghost Asylum. The Ghost Tours at MSP are now in their 6th season. During the 2015 tour season alone, over 26,000 people visited MSP.

Missouri State Penitentiary

Ever wondered what happens inside the walls of a 175+ year old prison in the dead of the night? Rumors have run rampant about the strange and unusual occurrences that occurred at the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) over the years. Apparitional sightings, unexplainable sounds, ghastly stories; you’ll find them all at the decommissioned prison. In recent years, well over 100 organized paranormal investigations have taken place. Participants use scientific equipment to document and substantiate their experiences. Time after time stories emerge of inexplicable sightings at the prison once dubbed the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” by Time magazine due to the number of murders and assaults that took place there. Word has gotten out about the after-dark paranormal activity at the Missouri State Penitentiary. In 2011, the SyFy network’s hit television show Ghost Hunters came to explore the historic site. MSP was then featured in an hour-long episode titled “The Bloodiest 47 Acres.” Not long afterwards, the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures held one of their notorious lockdowns inside the walls of the decommissioned prison. In late 2012, a production studio from Los Angeles spent a week filming its paranormal suspense-thriller “Apparitional.” As word continues to spread about the allegedly haunted prison, more and more people come to explore the eerie site. Visitors can choose between a variety of paranormal options: Ghost Tours, Ghost Hunts, Ghost Hunt Classes, Public and Private Overnight Investigations are all offered at the Missouri State Penitentiary. Brainstorming Tips I love storms. Bolts of lightning striking, breaking off, branching out, lighting the sky with brilliance…yet I like brainstorms even better! Those moments when a simple idea becomes a torrent of creativity where ideas are whipping around the room with no barriers or obstacles, those are the moments I crave. As Phi Theta Kappans, we are always seeking new ideas and experiences and finding ways to implement projects that truly create Honors in Action. However, little emphasis is given to the initial idea-generating process. Brainstorming is just that…a moment of creative freedom and self-expression where every member of the process feels connected and no one holds back; a time where “no” and “that is crazy” or “let’s be realistic” have no place. Imagine if someone dissed that whole “fly to the moon” idea or someone said “impossible” to carrying a phone/computer/video game/socialnetworking tool in our hand every day! So I challenge you to consider brainstorming in your chapter. How are ideas generated? Does everyone have a say? Are you open to all possibilities? Do you smile and laugh? Do you imagine the possibilities? A true brainstorming session is just that…a freewheeling expression of ideas that make you smile and say “why not!” So how about a few mechanics and how to’s for a successful brainstorming session? 1. Appoint a “facilitator” (notice I didn’t say leader) to keep the session going, help organize the thoughts, and ensure that the group stays on task and on time. 2. Appoint a dedicated “scribe” or secretary to make sure none of your amazing ideas are lost. 3. Determine a focus for your brainstorming session. What will your topic be? 4. Sit in a circle so everyone feels connected and a part of the idea-generating process. 5. Put something unique and interesting in the middle of the table. Some people need a place to focus their gaze and an interesting object to spark that creative vibe. 6. Make sure that everyone has paper and pens to jot down ideas. 7. Flipcharts or those super large sticky notes to put on the walls give you a place to record ideas so others have jumping off places and all ideas are remembered. 8. Make sure everyone is comfortable and that you are seated close together to foster a sense of community. 9. Now the big one…NO NEGATIVITY or PESSIMISM! All ideas are good and accepted…no matter how farfetched they may seem at the time! Hear them, record them, praise them…shout “brilliant” and keep moving! 10.And the final requirement: have fun, laugh, giggle, dream, and THINK BIG! Now that you have generated a list of incredible ideas, sit back and review what you have accomplished. See the big picture of your chapter’s combined creativity and begin to see the patterns of interest and possibilities. The best ideas and greatest inventions come from freedom of expression and unbridled creativity! Take your chapter to new heights and let lightning strike!

Dr. Kurt Jefferson Assistant Dean for Global Initiatives & Director, Churchill Institute for Global Engagement, Westminster College

Dr. Jefferson arrived at Westminster in 1993. Since 2010, he has led Churchill Institute for Global Engagement at Westminster. He also chairs the Transnational Studies and International Studies major programs. He continues to teach courses on European politics (west, central, post-Soviet, and European Union), Middle Eastern politics, and transnational studies, in addition to his administrative duties. His most recent book, Celtic Politics: Politics in Scotland, Ireland, and Wales (2011) focused on the rise of small nations in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Europe. He was named one of the “Top 10 Legends of the Faculty” at Westminster in 2009 by the Westminster Alumni Association. He earned a doctorate in political science from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has traveled widely and represented Westminster in places as diverse as Britain, China, France, Germany, Jordan, Mongolia, and Quebec, Canada.

A Brief History of Westminster College Westminster College was founded by Rev. William W. Robertson and the local Presbyterians in 1851 as Fulton College and assumed the present name in 1853. On September 10, 1909, old Westminster Hall was destroyed by fire - only the Columns remained. Since then, the Columns have been restored and serve as a symbolic rite of passage for new and graduating students. On March 5, 1946, Winston Churchill put Fulton on the map when he delivered his world-famous Iron Curtain Speech on Westminster College's campus after accepting Harry S. Truman's invitation. Many other world leaders have lectured at Westminster over the past several decades.

On May 7, 1969, Westminster College dedicated one of its most recognizable landmarks - the Church of St. Mary, the Virgin Aldermanbury. The Church was moved here from London and has quite a history. The undercroft of the Church is now home to the National Churchill Museum. Westminster College was traditionally an all-male institution until 1979, when the first coeducational class was admitted in a dramatic move that propelled the College into the future. In the last 15 years, Westminster has grown significantly in enrollment and diversity. Westminster is ranked 8th in the nation for percentage of international students, and creation of the Churchill Institute for Global Engagement has furthered global education with new academic programs and global initiatives. National Churchill Museum "From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the continent..."

In 1946 it was at Westminster College that Winston Churchill delivered one of the most significant speeches of his long and illustrious career. That address, formally entitled, The Sinews of Peace, but best known for that evocative phrase, "An Iron Curtain has descended across the Continent", effectively marked the beginning of the Cold War and linked, forever, Fulton and Westminster College with Winston Churchill.

In the 1960’s Westminster College set out to mark what would be the 20th anniversary of Churchill's visit. After due consideration to traditional modes of commemoration, Westminster College settled on the rather more ambitious notion of moving a Christopher Wren designed Church from London. This Church, St. Mary the Virgin Aldermanbury, had stood in London since 1677 when it replaced an earlier structure that had sat on the same site since the 12th century. This magnificent building, badly damaged during the London Blitz, was moved stone by stone to Westminster's campus and rebuilt to Wren's original specifications. Beneath this Church is the National Churchill Museum itself which, through the imaginative and innovative use of technology, brings to life the story of Winston Churchill and the world he knew. Recently rebuilt from the ground up, the new displays and the permanent exhibition, together with a host of associated historical and cultural activities that support it, was recognized by the United States Congress as America's permanent tribute to this great man and formally designated as America's National Churchill Museum.
