During the Spring and Summer terms 2016, volunteers from Years 7 and 8 ran and maintained their own experiment in association with the European Space Agency and The Royal Horticultural Society. Brune Park’s rocket scientists planted, grew and nurtured around 200 seeds, 100 of which had been with Tim Peake during his time on the International Space Station. After months of hard work our surviving rocket seeds were ready to be analysed. The results came in too late for our rocket scientists to find out before Summer term ended. It can now be revealed that the BLUE packet of seeds were the ones that spent time in space!

Brune Park Community School

On Wednesday 5 October Brune Park held its annual Careers Fair. The event was attended by all Year 9, 10 and 11 students throughout the school day and was also open for parents to attend in the evening. Over 25 organisations attended including colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers, as well as local businesses, the Army, Navy and Hampshire Constabulary. The aim of the event is to raise awareness to students about the range of opportunities available to them after Brune Park. The guests that came into the school were thrilled with the responses from the students and praised the levels of interest and knowledge of our students.

Brune Park in Bloom A dedicated group of students, with the help of Mrs Edgar, the school’s gardener, have brought the Jigsaw Gardens up to winning standards. Having entered into the Gosport in Bloom Schools Awards, in July they were invited to the awards ceremony. Along with coming 4th in the Best Decorative Feature, Best Wildlife Garden and Best Edible Garden, they won the Bronze in Best Container Garden and Silver in Best Sensory Garden. A fantastic achievement! Well done!

Winning team with Ms Beechurst, Deputy Headteacher

Message from Executive Headteacher Julia Vincent I have thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Brune Park community. The school is exceptional in its sense of pride and community spirit. There is no doubt that special measures is a difficult time for schools, however at Brune Park I am continually impressed with the staff and students’ determination to work hard and improve. There are many changes which are taking place to embed school improvement systems. In order to drive this improvement I have appointed a number of Associate Assistant Headteachers, to support the Senior Leader Team. They are: Miss Harrowsmith, Miss O’Grady, Mrs Bramley, Mr Kupersamy and Mr Searley. May I thank all parents who are continuing to support the school on its journey of improvement. I wish you a lovely half term.

The Battle of Hastings has come to Brune Park!

Jessica Webb as Harold

Year 7 students have been working hard in History lessons to learn about the Norman Conquest. They have taken to the school field to re-enact the famous battle of 1066, the Battle of Hastings. In preparation for their battles the Year 7s created their own Norman or Saxon shields and weapons; then marched onto the field of battle. The students all performed brilliantly, with some taking on key historical roles like William, Bishop Odo and poor Harold Godwinson - the Saxon king who ends up with an arrow in his eye!

The Merlin Helicopter Rescue Mission A team of Year 9 students, with an interest in Engineering, were invited to take part in a competition to design and build a helicopter rescue platform. They were given a scenario that a Merlin MK2 helicopter had crashed in a remote part of the desert; their task was to design, build and test a system to rescue the aircraft.

BookBuzz 2016

The team worked well together, developing their engineering, communication, problem solving and innovation skills. Brune Park students came 2nd in their group heat with a very successful design and build. The event was organised by EBP South, courtesy of Lockheed Martin.

Brune Park’s Athletics Club with Portsmouth Athletics Club Chairman, Phil Budd.

Athletics In September Felicity Gille, Year 10, was invited to Portsmouth Athletics Club to receive an award for hard work, positive attitude and effort shown when training and competing for the club. There were only two athletes recognised for this award so congratulations to Felicity. The award was presented by Paralympic athlete and bronze medallist, Olivia Breen. Felicity is one of several Brune Park students to join Portsmouth Athletics Club. If you would like any information about Athletics, or Portsmouth Athletics Club specifically, please see Mr Thurgood or visit the club’s website. The Brune Park Athletics Club also runs all year round on Wednesday afternoons, 2.30pm – 3.30pm. Brune Park has recently become only the third secondary school in the area to be awarded funding by ‘Pompey in the Community’ enabling us to access coaching and equipment. Phil Budd, the Chairman and well established Athletics Coach at the City of Portsmouth Athletics Club, will attend the already well-established Brune Park club to provide technical support for our students to help them to become even better athletes.

Richard Conlon Drama Workshop Year 11 GCSE Drama students took part in a fantastic workshop run by Richard Conlon, a playright and adapter of ‘Face’, which is the set text for the students’ Unit 3 written exam in May 2017. The day long workshop was a wonderful experience for the students and they truly were a credit to the school. Richard Conlon commented that the students were ‘a credit to the Drama Department. They were really focused and ready to get involved. I wish them good luck for their GCSE in Drama’. At the start of the Autumn term all Year 7 students were given the chance to select a free book from 12 titles offered through the BookBuzz scheme. The books arrived in school early in October and lived up to the name, creating a lovely buzz in the Library when they were distributed. Enjoy your books Year 7 – you have made great choices!

The Oscars - Year 11 Leavers 2016

The Oscars ceremony was a wonderful evening celebrating the success of Expressive Arts. The evening was opened by Deano Pickering, Senior Projects Officer at Art University Bournemouth. He spoke very passionately about the opportunities that become available after studying a Creative Arts subject. This year the Outstanding Contribution to the Expressive Arts was jointly awarded to Jessica Hamer and Faith Draper.

Glass in Society - The Use of Composite (GRP) in the Maritime Sector Having spent a day at The Maritime Technology Centre, Southampton City Council learning how to laminate GRP on hulls and deck panels, students designed and built their own speedboats. Two boats were selected for racing; Rib-it and Bullet. On race day, held at QinetiQ in Gosport, the speedboats performed well coming 4th and 5th respectively out of 11 teams in total. Team 1 with ‘Rib-it’ Team 1 with ‘Bullet’

The project was a huge success with completed designed, built and successfully raced, GRP Powerboats. The contribution to students’ learning and career information, including apprenticeship pathways, was excellent; their awareness of the Glass industry likewise.

National Citizen Service (NCS) 2017

We are delighted that, once again, Brune Park will be promoting National Citizen Service (NCS) to Year 11 students. This is an adventure of a lifetime where they will learn to surf, tackle assault courses, produce music videos, develop skills for work and life and much more. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to take on new challenges and push themselves outside of their comfort zone. Current Year 11 students can visit www.mypbed.co.uk/ncs for more information and to express interest, or contact our local NCS Engagement Coordinator [email protected] or on 07714 783579.

Lights, Camera, Action On Monday 11 July our Year 10 Drama students performed ‘Lights, Camera, Action’, a sharing of the work they’ve completed over the past year in lessons and extra-curricular clubs. Bradley Mackay and Sam Beel, our recent ex Year 11’s, missed Drama so much they came back to present the Year 10 show as a comedic duo! We are extremely proud of them all and look forward to seeing what they achieve in Year 11! Everyone is welcome to attend the performances - please do come along for an enjoyable evening whilst showing your support for our students.

Perfect Result for Molly The PE Department would like to congratulate ex Year 11 student Molly Gerlack who achieved a perfect 100% in her written theory examination, contributing to an A grade overall. This is extremely rare and is a truly phenomenal achievement. Molly was dedicated to all of her studies and achieved 4 A*, 6 A, and a B grade which proves that hard work and determination can pay off in the end. We have requested that her paper be returned to Brune Park to use as a model for future GCSE PE students.
