CSP / fTSCR – Hot Strip Mills Ezz Steel excels in achieving and surpassing international standards in HRC production with its two innovative Hot Strip Mills in Dekheila (Alexandria) and Ain Sokhna (Suez) created through the adoption of both the Compact Strip Production (CSP) of SMS Demag and the flexible Thin Slab Casting and Rolling (fTSCR) of Danieli. Ezz Steel’s Hot Strip Mill Facilities
Dekheila Ezz Steel began production operations in Dekheila in 1987 and has grown rapidly in technological advancements and production output ever since. The Dekheila plant produces one million tonnes of HRC per year and houses CSP technology used in only a handful of other mills worldwide. Ezz Steel’s operating performance is remarkable by any standards.
The company’s original Rebar plant had a nominal output of 745,000 tonnes per annum. With continued innovation and expansion, current annual capacity is 2 million tonnes of steel rebars. The Dekheila mill is internationally competitive and exports profitably a significant percentage of its annual production. The transition to HRC products in 2000 was an aggressive one and Ezz Steel’s HRC products, hands down, are among the world’s top manufactured steel products. HRC production capacity at the Dekheila plant is one million tonnes per year. The investment in HRC products embraces a series of major projects. In addition to the Hot Strip Mills, Ezz Steel keeps abreast of advancements in the industry by continually upgrading quality control measures and equipment.

Direct Reduction Iron (DRI) Ezz Steel’s high-level use of DRI, with its low levels of residual elements, ensures steels of the highest standards of metallurgical properties are produced. Steel Processing Center The Ezz Steel facility’s processing center offers leading technology, preparing materials to the exact requirements of the client’s needs: coil, slit coil or sheets. The center ensures client’s reduction of stock levels via Ezz Steel’s On Time delivery system, a quality control measure that the company has perfected over the years.
Automation Controls Plants are designed with the most up-todate automation levels that control all process parameters to yield the perfect strip; i.e. homogenous sheet both across the width and length of the coil: thickness, width, flatness control and surface quality (consistent dimensional accuracy).

Ezz Steel’s Hot Strip Mill Facilities
Ain Sokhna Less than 30 kilometers from Suez and its international ports, Ain Sokhna is situated on the western coast of the Red Sea. A once arid desert region with vast mineral resources, the Ezz Steel Ain Sokhna Hot Strip Mill is a pioneering facility in steel production. With an output of 1.3 million tpy, this thin slab casting mini-mill commissioned operations in October 2002.
Built to be export-oriented, the mill’s vision and continual focus is on maximizing its production capabilities, reducing costs and supplying high quality, value-added products. The plant has strategic transportation links, providing important logistical advantages for receiving raw materials and shipping finished products to its clients.
Ain Sokhna’s mini-mill utilizes a thin slab continuous caster that applies dynamic soft reduction to liquid steel produced by melting scrap and quality DRI from its sister plant in Dekheila, which has a three million tpy of Midrex capacity. Equipped with the latest steel making process the steel industry offers, the mini-mill effectively guarantees product satisfaction.
The project design is based on the minimill concept, producing liquid steel by melting scrap and DRI. Other units include a thin slab continuous caster, a hot strip rolling mill and finishing lines with a capacity of 1.3 million tpy of HRC. The plant utilizes conventional, technological and innovative features designed to enhance its capabilities and operational flexibility, producing strip thickness from 1.2 mm to 12.7 mm and widths from 800 mm to 1,600 mm.

Ain Sokhna hot strip mill is the most modern mill for the production of quality coils from thin slabs. Assuring Quality Operations The integrated operations of Ezz Steel, the blemish-free thin steel slabs from which the light gauge HRC is produced, undergo the same rigid quality control procedures as the finished product. Ezz Steel’s production is continually optimized to produce the best quality HRC at maximum output capacity.
Ezz Steel’s labs not only monitor its continual steel heats, but they also conduct samples of all DRI plants (one sample every four hours) and slag. The microstructure of all its materials is thoroughly put to the test to give clients the best Ezz Steel’s offers. The labs also provide clients with information on how to best utilize and recycle the materials.
Ezz Steel Laboratories Ezz Steel products undergo rigorous and thorough testing at various stages of production. Not only are five to seven samples of each steel heat analyzed twice, further testing is done via Ezz Steel’s EAF sample transportation system. Steel samples are sent from the in-house plants to Ezz Steel’s main onsite ISO/IEC 17025 certified laboratory in under 60 seconds, analyzed further and returned in under four minutes along with the complete analysis and feedback shown on all pulpit screens across the mill.
Meticulous Storage & Dispatch Steel making, rolling, cooling and coiling operations are all part of a highly automated and computer-controlled process. There is uncompromising accuracy throughout the process with the same care applied to storage and dispatch of the material.

Ezz Steel mills use thin slab casting as opposed to conventional casting, which offers clients more consistent dimensions, uniform metallurgical and mechanical strength abilities according to specification grades of steel endurance and savings in thin and ultra thin gauges for additional cold rolling.
