Clearly Speaking A Newsletter for friends of the Center for Hearing & Speech No. 37 • MAY 2011 • www.hearing-speechstlouis.org

The Center to host a Free Clinic Day! In celebration of Better Hearing and Speech Month, the Center for Hearing & Speech will open its’ doors to the community on Saturday, May 21st, from 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. for free hearing, speech and vision screenings for children ages 3 - 18, and free hearing screenings for adults. Last year, Free Clinic Day drew more than 125 kids and adults, who not only received free screenings, but also were treated to refreshments and entertainment. Every child who attends will receive a free “Goody” bag assembled by the Center’s staff members. Sponsored by AT&T and Schnucks, Free Clinic Day has grown every year since its inception, and promises to be an even bigger success this year. The Center’s staff will provide the hearing, speech and vision screenings, and will also be available to answer guests’ questions, and recommend the next steps for individuals needing follow-up services. Anyone interested in receiving these free services must make an appointment by calling Mary Anne Robinson at (314) 737-5091.

Mission Statement The Center for Hearing & Speech improves the quality of life for individuals with hearing and speech disorders by providing caring and high quality services regardless of one’s ability to pay, and continually strives to address a greater portion of the unmet need relating to speech and audiology in the St. Louis region.

Executive Director’s Column Rita Tintera Teamwork. How frequently do we hear or read about the

importance of teamwork in an organization? Whether it be a company, an athletic team or a nonprofit organization, teamwork is pivotal to the success of an organization. However, all too often we see examples of “teams” that cannot pull together. The word “teamwork” can be easily described: a group of individuals pulling together as one to meet a common goal. But, it is not nearly as easy to find examples of teamwork in the real world. Here at the Center, we are very fortunate to have the opportunity to see teamwork in action every day. From the front desk to the Audiology and Speech departments, and within the walls of the administrative offices, you can witness individuals from every department pull together and work as an efficient team. Each day, the Center’s staff works towards the mission of the organization. Examples of this teamwork include an Audiologist helping the Clinic Manager greet and check-in clients, a Speech Pathologist helping a new client fill out forms, the Finance staff helping the Development team plan a fundraising event and volunteers arriving early and working late to get the job done. And the teamwork does not stop there. Our team also includes Board members who provide business expertise and strategic direction to the entire organization and Auxiliary Group members who work countless hours to spread the word about the Center and make Musical Mayhem a rousing success. Each year it takes a large team to ensure that more than 10,000 individuals receive the hearing and speech services they need to thrive in our community. Our team members include hundreds of loyal supporters (individuals, corporations and foundations) who provide the resources necessary to meet our mission. Staff, Board members, volunteers and supporters all pointed in the same direction, all pulling together to serve our clients. Thank you for being part of the Center’s team!

Advocacy Corner

May is Better Hearing & Speech Month The Center for Hearing & Speech celebrates Better Hearing and Speech Month each May. As you read in the front page article, the Center is hosting a Free Clinic Day on May 21. This event is a great opportunity to spread the word about communication disorders and the importance of hearing and speech screenings. An estimated 28 million Americans have a hearing loss that can be treated. Listed below are some of the possible warning signs of hearing loss. • Frequently ask people to repeat themselves • Often turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better • Understand people better when you wear your glasses or look directly at their faces • Lose your place in group conversations • Keep the volume on your radio or TV at a level that others say is too loud • Have pain or ringing in your ears “Even a very slight hearing loss can impact daily living,” said Dr. Lara Noble, Chief Audiologist at the Center. “Hearing loss is treatable, and there is no reason for anyone to miss all the important sounds of life.” Speech and language disorders affect 14 million Americans. Reading, writing, gesturing, listening, and speaking are all forms of language—a code we learn in order to communicate. Studies show that children with untreated communication disorders frequently perform at a poor or insufficient academic level, struggle with literacy, have difficulty understanding and expressing language, misunderstand social cues, avoid attending school, show poor judgment and have difficulty with tests. The Center provides the treatment needed for these children to overcome their disorders, become successful students and, ultimately, become successful adults. “Fortunately, most people with speech and language problems can be helped,” said Gina Cato, Chief Speech/Language Pathologist at the Center. “Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, we can teach people with speech and language problems strategies to help them cope.” If you are concerned about your hearing or the hearing or speech of a loved one, please make an appointment to attend the Center’s Free Clinic Day on Saturday, May 21. Call 314-737-5091.

Volunteer News They say that an army “runs on its stomach”, but at the Center, we “run” on the dedicated efforts of our wonderful volunteers, and we always need more volunteers. Volunteer Opportunities: • Volunteers to join the Auxiliary Group to help spread the word about the Center and plan/ manage Musical Mayhem (our primary fundraising event) • Volunteers to work with our audiologists and speech/language pathologists • Volunteers to assist with administrative and development responsibilities • Volunteers to provide a wide variety of general services throughout the Center Are you interested in learning more about how you can help? Please visit our website at www.hearing-speechstlouis.org or contact Chelsey Brown, the Center’s VISTA Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] or 314-737-5095. This is a great opportunity for you to help others JOIN THE CONVERSATION.

Client Profile

Stanley Look at Stanley’s big smile! We met Stanley at the Center’s 2010 Free Clinic Day. Stanley passed the hearing and vision screening with flying colors, but not so with the speech screening. This led to a full speech/language evaluation and enrollment in individualized therapy. Stanley started speech therapy last summer. He worked on saying words and sounds clearly, following 2-step directions and saying new descriptive vocabulary words such as “big” and “little”. He is smiling because he is now equipped with the age-appropriate skills needed to thrive in kindergarten.

Fundraising News We began the year with high energy and momentum. This was highlighted by a record turnout at Musical Mayhem at Harrah’s Hotel & Casino in February with record-setting revenue. Foundation grants continue to be a major source of revenue and the Development staff is hard at work renewing current grants and pursuing new opportunities. It is our pleasure to thank the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association for their most generous support of the School Screening Program. The Center’s supporters turned out in big numbers for a fundraiser at Chevys Fresh Mex in St. Charles, which was sponsored by the Iota-Xi chapter of the Delta Zeta sorority from University of Missouri – St. Louis. Check our website for information on the next event.

Legacy of Giving The Center for Hearing & Speech is dedicated to helping people make the most of life. Having an up-todate will is a natural extension of this philosophy. An estate plan helps you exercise your precious right to determine how your property and other assets will be distributed after your death. Your estate plan helps you care for your family and friends, enables you to support charities like the Center for Hearing & Speech and likely saves taxes at the same time. To learn more about how to ensure that the legacy of your life carries on, call the Center’s Development Director, Doug Hartman at 314-968-4710.
