Homemade cleaners are a great way to not only cut down on your budget, but even better, they are made from simple ingredients such as: borax, baking soda, castile soap, vinegar and essential oils, along with a few others, which have the added benefit of being healthier to use. Here are some of the super powers of natural ingredients: Baking Soda: Neutralizing Agent, Captures Odors. Borax: made of all natural components, Castile Soap: Vegetable based instead of petroleum/animal fat based. Essential Oils: Eucalyptus: Antiseptic, disinfectant , repels insects. Lavender: High in linalool—which is naturally anti-bacterial, also naturally Antiseptic and anti-fungal. Lemon Oil: Kills Molds, Knocks out allergens, Peppermint: Antiseptic, antibacterial, Tea tree Oil: Destroys bacteria, mold and fungus. Vinegar (White): All natural, made from grains, fruits or vegetables. So acidic that it breaks down grease, bacteria and germs. Removes odors and deters ants. TOP TIPS for homemade cleaners: DO NOT EVER MIX Ammonia and Bleach!!! Creates a highly toxic gas when mixed. DO USE GLOVES! Do Not use vinegar on Marble. Castile Soap leaves a Film on stone and ceramic surfaces. Never ingest essential oils. Never use microfiber cloths on a TV. Washing Soda is not the same Baking Soda. They are NOT interchangeable.

HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS All Purpose Cleaners All-Purpose Cleaner #1 1 T. borax 3 T. vinegar 1 T. liquid dish soap 2 c. very hot tap water 1 drop essential oil or few drops of fragrance oils. Combine the borax, washing soda, vinegar and liquid soap in a spray bottle. Add very hot tap water, shaking the bottle gently until the minerals have dissolved. Works great on granite countertops. All-Purpose Cleaner #2 2 T. Dawn 2 c water Mix in spray bottle. Disinfectant Cleaner 2 Tbs Ammonia ¼ cup chlorine bleach 2 Tbs liquid dish soap ½ cup powder detergent 1 quart warm water Mix ingredients in in a small bucket. Pour into container spray container and label.

Homemade 409 1 qt of tap water

Mix and pour into spray bottle.

Bathroom All Purpose Spray Bathroom Spray 1 c water ½ c. vinegar ½ t. castile soap ¼ t. peppermint oil Mix together in spray bottle, shake before each use. Spay until and walls; wipe clean with damp sponge.

Toilet Toilet Bowl Cleaner and Freshener 1 c. baking soda 1 c. vinegar Sprinkle bowl with with soda then drizzle with vinegar. Let fizz for 10 minutes, scrub with brush then flush. Toilet Bowl Cleaner ¼ c borax lemon juice Flush toilet, when finished filling sprinkle with borax and squeeze lemon juice over. Let sit overnight if possible, scrub with brush and flush. Toilet Freshener Wipe peppermint essential oil under rim.

Tub, Tile And Shower Diane’s Favorite Tub Cleaner Dampen tub and tile, sprinkle with borax, scrub and rinse. Tub and Tile 1 t. Dawn dish soap 4 drops anti-bacterial essential oil 1 c. baking soda Put in bowl, add just enough water to make a paste. Apply with a sponge or brush to scour bathtub surfaces. Soap Scum and Hard Water Spots ½ c. vinegar ½ c Dawn liquid soap Heat vinegar, pour into spray bottle and add Dawn. Shake gently. Spray on shower doors and shower. Let sit, scrub with sponge then rinse down with pitcher of warm water. Hint: use it in a scrubbing wand after your shower then spray down. Mold & Mildew Cleaner 1 quart hot water 1 qt white vinegar 2 T. borax Mix all ingredients. Spray or apply with a sponge and scrub the moldy area or use an electric tootlebrush (old brush of course), then let sit for few hours or overnight. Rinse well. Mold and Mildew Cleaner– Bleach Based Mix 3/4 cup chlorine bleach in 1 gal of water. Put some of this mixture into a spray bottle and use like you would a normal bathroom cleaner. A little elbow grease and some soaking will help remove tough stains. Remember this is bleach you are using and it will leave spots on your clothes. Wear an old t-shirt and shorts when using this bleach based mildew cleaner. Showerhead Cleaner 1/3 cup baking soda 1 cup white vinegar Put in a plastic bag and use a twisty tie to attach the bag to the showerhead. Let soak several hours or overnight. Homemade Drain Cleaner Recipe 1 box of baking soda vinegar Pour half of baking soda down the clogged drain. Pour in just enough vinegar to get it really foamy. Wait for the foam to settle; repeat with the remaining soda and vinegar. Let the mixture sit in your drain for at least an hour, longer if you can, then rinse it with plenty of hot water. CARPET CLEANERS General Carpet Cleaner 2 c. vinegar 1 c. warm water Mix in spray bottle. Spray directly on stain, let sit for several minutes and gently rub with a brush or damp cloth. Blot up extra. Heavy Duty Carpet Cleaning ¼ c. salt ¼ c. borax ¼ c vinegar Mix and rub paste into carpet with fingertips and leave until dry then vacuum up all powder.

Homemade Steam Carpet Cleaner Solution 1/4 c. lemon-scented ammonia 1/4 c. white vinegar 3 tsp dish washing soap little less than 1 gallon hot water Mix everything in a large bucket. Pour it into your steam cleaner and then follow the regular directions of use. Pet Stain Carpet Cleaner Test this on a hidden piece of carpet first. 12 oz hydrogen peroxide 1/2 a teaspoon of dish soap 1 1/2 t. baking soda. Pour all ingredients in a plastic trigger bottle and gently tilt back and forth until mixed. Completely saturate the stain then block it off to keep pets and kids out of it and let it dry on its own. Note: it bubbles up a lot as it dissolves the stain also releasing the smell into the air so this is best done on a day when you won’t be in that room for a couple hours.

Floor Cleaners General ½ c vinegar 1 gal water Essential oil (peppermint/lemon) Mix together. Spray or mop on floor. Use ¼ c. vinegar for ceramic or stone floors. All-Purpose Floor Cleaner 1 T. liquid dish soap 1/4 c. vinegar 1 gal. warm water Put soap and vinegar in the bottom of a bucket. Fill the bucket with warm water, swishing the ingredients around a bit to activate the soap. Wash the floor as you normally would. Vinyl and Linoleum Floor 1 c. vinegar few drops baby oil 1 gal warm water. Mop as usual. For tough jobs: add up to ¼ c. borax, use sparingly. Unsealed Wood Floors 2 c vinegar 1 T olive oil Mix in bucket and spread with mop or soft cloth. Let soak for 20 minutes then dry mop or wipe up excess liquid.

Furniture Polish Dust-buster Mix 10 drops of pure lemon oil, 2 T of lemon juice and a few drops of olive oil in a spray bottle. Spray onto surfaces and wipe clean with a clean flannel cotton cloth. (leftovers go rancid) Furniture Polish Mix ¼ cup of olive oil with 4 T of vinegar and 20-30 drops of lemon essential oils. Apply to a towel and wipe. Leather Furniture Cleaner Add 2 drops of Castile soap to 1 quart of warm water. Apply to the leather with a barely moist sponge. Varnished Wood Add a few drops of lemon oil into ½ cup of warm water. Mix well and spray onto a soft, slightly damp cotton cloth. Wipe furniture with the cloth, then wipe clean with a soft dry cotton cloth.

Unvarnished Wood Mix two teaspoons each of olive oil and lemon juice and apply a small amount to a soft cotton cloth. Wring the cloth to spread the mixture further into the material and apply to the furniture using wide strokes to distribute oil evenly.

Windows Homemade Window Cleaner 3 T vinegar

3 ½ c. water 1/2 tsp liquid dish soap 3 T rubbing alcohol Mix everything together and then pour it into a clean spray bottle. Label. Margaret’s Window Cleaner ½ c. ammonia 16 oz rubbing alcohol 1 t. Dawn dish detergent Fill 1 gallon jug half way with water, add ammonia and alcohol, shake to mix. Add Dawn and gently fill jug the remainder of way with water, gently stir to mix in dawn. Label. Pour into spray bottle for use.

Kitchen Cleaners Cutting Board To deep-clean, sprinkle with coarse salt once a week, rub with lemon and rinse. Alternatively, coat boards with a paste of baking soda and water and leave on for five minutes; rinse well. HINT: For a cutting board or countertop that’s been exposed to raw meat, squirt straight white vinegar on the surface and follow with a squirt of hydrogen peroxide to knock out all those germs.

Dishes Dishwasher Soap 1/2 cup Borax 1/2 cup Washing Soda 1/4 cup TSP 1/4 cup Coarse Kosher Salt Mix it all up well. Use 1 Tablespoon per load. Dishwasher Soap 2 1 t. oxygen bleach (Sun or Oxyclean) 1/2 t. Dawn dish soap Put right I to soap dispenser in dishwasher. Do not use more than 1/2 t. dawn. No Spot Dish Rinse Put 1/2 c. vinegar in small right-side-up bowl on top shelf of dish washer. To Clean Dishwasher Place a dishwasher safe bowl filled with white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle without any other dishes. Afterwards, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bottom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle with the hottest water. Removes grease, odor, stains and freshens up the smell and look of the dishwasher. Garbage Disposal Pour ice and vinegar down the disposal while it is running. The ice will dislodge and gunk and the vinegar with sanitize it.

Microwave Cleaner ½ c vinegar, 2 c water. Combine in microwave safe bowl, heat on high for 3-4 minutes, remove bowl and wipe down inside microwave. (you can add a squeeze of lemon too.) Oven Cleaner Mix 2 cups of hot water, 1 T of natural dish liquid and 1 teaspoon of Borax in a spray bottle. Spray on the designated mess, let sit for 20 minutes and wipe off with a clean cloth. For handling an extra-greasy mess, wipe off as much loose goop as possible first with crumpled newspaper, then use the spray. Stainless Steel Cleaner In a Spray bottle, mix together 2/3 parts vinegar, a few drops of dish soap and 1/3 part water.

Other Cleaning 2 parts water Mix in spray bottle and spray.

Air Freshener 1 part rubbing alcohol

Cleaning Fruits and Vegetables Fill a clean sink halfway with lukewarm water. Add 1 cup of white vinegar. Mix. Add your fruit or vegetables. Don't over fill. Soak for about 10 minutes. Rinse completely and air dry. When you are done, the produce will be clean and wax free and the water will be dirty with no vinegar taste. Drain Cleaner Pour ½ cup baking soda down the drain, then follow it with a ½ cup of vinegar. The resulting chemical reaction can break fatty acids down into soap and glycerin, allowing the clog to was down the drain. After 15 minutes, pour in boiling water to clear residue. CAUTION: ONLY USE this method with METAL PLUMBING and DO NOT USE this method if you’ve recently tried a commercial drain product. Mattress Cleaner 1 cup of baking soda into a mason jar and drop in 4 drops of lavender essential oil. Put on the lid and shake up the jar. Using a strained, sprinkle mixture all over the mattress and let it sit for an hour or more. Using the hose end of your vacuum, thoroughly vacuum the mattress. Rust Remover Sprinkle a little salt on the rust, squeeze a lime over the salt until it is well soaked. Leave the mixture on for 2 to 3 hours. Use the leftover lime rind to scrub at the residue.

Deodorant    

Give your body a week to detox and chemically adapt. To avoid stinging, wait an hour before applying to freshly shaved or waxed armpits. Itchy = replace 1 T baking soda w/ cornstarch or use arrowroot instead or cornstarch or add ¼ cup cocoa butter. Add a scent: use few drops of essential oils: tea tree, citrus or floral

Deodorant 1 1 cup baking soda 1 cup cornstarch or arrowroot 1/3 cup coconut oil Sift the baking soda and cornstarch. Mix together with oil in a large bowl. It will be like frosting and will harden with time. Store in jars. Makes 2 1/2 cup for under $2.00. Apply a pea-sized amount on underarms. Deodorant 2 3 T shea butter 3 T baking soda 2 T cornstarch 2 T cocoa butter 2 gel caps vitamin E Essential Oil for scent Melt all the ingredients (except the oils) and gave it a good stir. Add the oil, stir again, and pour it in a jar with tight fitting lid. Cool in the fridge to set. Makes ½ c. To use: Roll a pea-sized ball and rub in. Foot Ointment 1 16oz package of paraffin 2 large containers of Petroleum Jelly Melt together over low heat until melted together. Poor back into the Petroleum Jelly jars plus any other jar you may have on hand. It will solidify quickly. Sudsing Honey Bath Soap 1 cup sweet almond oil or light olive oil 1/2 cup honey 1/2 c liquid hand soap 1 T vanilla extract Add all the ingredients to a clean plastic bottle with a squeeze top and shake gently until completely incorporated. Be sure to shake again before using. Squeeze desired amount under running water into a bathtub. Step in and enjoy!

Shampoo and Rinses Shampoos Blonde Shampoo 3 oz Liquid Castile Soap 4 chamomile Tea Bags 1/2 t Olive oil Steep the tea and water in a covered pan for 30 minutes. Strain and allow to cool. Mix with remaining ingredients then bottle. Chamomile Shampoo 4 bags of Chamomile tea 4 T pure soap flakes 1 1/2 T glycerin Steep the tea bags in 1 1/2 cups of boiled water for 20 minutes. Remove the tea bags and discard. Add the soap flakes to the tea and let stand until the soap softens. Stir in glycerin until well blended. Keep in a dark, cool place in a sealed bottle. Warning: Should be avoided by those with ragweed and pollen allergies Dark Hair Shampoo 3 oz Liquid Castile Soap 1 T Sage 1 T rosemary 2 Black tea bags 1/2 t Olive oil Steep the tea and water in a covered pan for 30 minutes. Strain and allow to cool. Mix with remaining ingredients then bottle. Dandruff-dry shampoo Massage handfuls of baking soda into the hair and scalp to absorb oil and to loosen dead skin on scalp. Rinse thoroughly, use no other shampoos. While initially the hair may seem dry, after several weeks, dandruff will be gone and hair will be smooth and shiny. Dandruff Shampoo 6 oz Liquid Castile Soap 5 drops Tea Tree essential oil 1/2 t+ Jojoba oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well Dry Shampoo 1/2 cup Cornstarch Sprinkle the cornstarch in your hair or use a large make up brush to dust into hair. Let it absorb for a few minutes, brush it out. Dry or Color Treated Hair Shampoo 6 oz Liquid Castile Soap 1/2 teaspoon avocado oil 1 teaspoon coconut oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well. Glossy Shine Shampoo 6 oz Liquid Castile Soap 1 1/2 teaspoon Olive Oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well. Hair Loss Castile Shampoo 6 oz Liquid Castile Soap 5 Drops Rosemary Essential Oil 3 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well.

Oily Hair Shampoo 6 oz Liquid Castile Soap 5 drops lavender essential oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well Simple Shampoo 1/4 c water 1/4 c liquid Castile Soap 1/2 t light vegetable oil Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Use as you would any shampoo, rinse well

Conditioners and Rinses Apple Cider Build Up Remover 1 ounce apple cider vinegar 1 quart of distilled water. Combine the apple cider with the water, stir. Pour through hair to get rid of buildup and soften hair at the same time. Rinse with tap water. Chamomile Hair Rinse 1 ounce apple cider vinegar 1 quart of distilled water. Combine the apple cider with the water, stir. Pour through hair to get rid of buildup and soften hair at the same time. Rinse with tap water. Coconut Honey Deep Conditioner 4 T Coconut oil 2 T Natural honey Place coconut oil and honey in a small plastic bag and place the bag in a hot cup of water for 1 minute to warm. Apply to hair, wrap hair in a towel for 20 minutes. Wash then dry hair. launder as usual. It works great on baby clothes, which have formula stains. Dandruff Mint Rinse 1 cup water 1 cup apple cider vinegar 1 handful of fresh mint leaves Boil ingredients. Strain and pour into a container. Massage solution into the scalp, let dry without rinsing out. Egg Conditioner 1 egg yolk 1/2 tsp olive oil 3/4 c lukewarm water Beat egg yolk until it is thick and light colored. Add oil beat well. Slowly add and beat the water into the egg mixture. Pour mixture into a container. After shampooing, massage all conditioner into hair and leave on for a few minutes before thoroughly rinsing. Fruit Salad Deep Conditioner 1/2 banana 1/4 avocado 1/4 cantaloupe 1 T wheat germ oil 1 T yogurt Blend all ingredients. Apply to hair. For extra conditioning, squeeze in the contents of a vitamin E capsule. Leave in hair for 15 minutes. Then rinse. Honey Hair Conditioner – for shine Mix 1/2 c. honey with 1/4 c. olive oil. (Use 2 T of oil if you have normal to oily hair.) Using a small amount at a time, work mixture through hair until it is evenly coated. Cover hair with a shower cap; leave on 30 minutes. Remove shower cap; shampoo well and rinse. Dry and style as usual.

Hot Oil Conditioner 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup boiling water Combine ingredients then warm on low heat. Massage mixture into the scalp and hair. Wrap hair in a hot towel for 15 minutes. Shampoo & rinse out Jojoba Hair Conditioner 1 c rose floral water 1 T jojoba oil 10 drops vitamin E oil In the top of a double boiler, gently warm the rose water. Once rose water is warm, add jojoba oil. For extra conditioning, leave on for several minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Shampoo and rinse again with cool water. Lavender Hair Rinse 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 qt of distilled water 15 drops Lavender essential oil Combine the all ingredients. Pour through hair to get rid of buildup and oil. Mayonnaise Conditioner 1/2 cup mayo Rinse and towel dry. Apply mayonnaise to the hair. Massage in. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, shampoo again lightly and rinse with an apple cider vinegar and water solution. This will help with the smell and remove any residue. Rosemary Hair Rinse 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 1 qt of distilled water 15 drops rosemary essential oil Combine the all ingredients. Pour through hair to get rid of buildup and soften hair at the same time. Tropical Conditioner 1 peeled and mashed Avocado 1 cup Coconut milk Combine mashed avocado with some coconut milk in a small bowl. Heat in microwave for about 45 seconds. Stir. Test temperature. Massage mixture into hair. Wrap hair in a hot towel or cover with shower cap for 15 minutes. Shampoo & rinse out. Sesame & Coconut Protein Conditioner 2 T olive oil 2 T light sesame oil 2 eggs 2 T coconut milk 2 T honey 1 tsp coconut oil Mix ingredients in bowl, apply to hair before shampoo. Let sit for 20 minutes. Rinse, then shampoo. Strength Building Deep Conditioner 1 T virgin olive oil 2 T honey 1 T buttermilk 1 T unbleached flour Blend all ingredients. Microwave the mixture for 30 seconds until hot. Stir in flour to make a paste. Apply the warm paste to wet hair and allow the conditioner to set for 20 minutes Wash as normal.
