Homecomposting Advantages – Disadvantages Short script Advantges of Homecomposting in family houses for waste manegement of municipalities – regions –public and private waste institutions are well known: Household-Waste reduction of 20-50% (depends on country and season) Nearly gratis for the public budget, compared with costs of green- bin-system (Biotonne) of around € 100,-- /family-house/year – every yedar. Examples: City of 100.000 inhabitants, ca. 25% part of households in family houses = ca. 10.000 family houses x € 100,-- (costs of green bin/year) = € 1.000.000,--/year Region of 1.000.000 inhabitants, ca. 40% part of households in family houses = ca. 160.000 family houses x € 100,-- (costs of green bin/year) = € 16.000.000,--/year. So even if garden owners are provided with a composter gratis (annual costs at 10 years durability ca. € 20,--), the municipality/waste organizer – can save millions of Euros every year and • protect environment against thousands of km in waste transport, also make possible • environmental training for the people and their children.

Disadvantages of homecomposting until now: Work of turning over and hygienic problems Compost livings need much oxygen, fault of oxygen (air) causes putrefaction and bad odors. Conventional piles inside or outside composters can only be aerated horizontally from the side, so the livings more inside the pile get to less air for their work, other microbes (decayresistant) increase causing bad odors and long term composting - process. Therefore the pile should be built up in layers to encourage vertical aeration and turned over regurlarly. Well spoken, but only a few are following these composting instructions. These problems are undisputed. Below is – as example for numerous others - a quote from the home page of the Waste Management department of the Local Government of Regensburg in Germany: http://www.landkreis-regensburg.de/DynDox/E021FD44-4993-4616-B4B6B61D4B143ADD/lrar_richtig_kompostieren_hinweise_des_landkreises_regensburg_zur_eigenkompostierung_im_garten.pdf

In English: “For the owners composters e.g. thermo or eco-composters made mainly from recycled plastic, here are a few tips: • Due to reduced aeration, mostly because the pile is too wet, add structured material such as wood, small branches. • About 3 months after the beginning of the rot, the compost pile should be turned over i.e. mixed and stacked again. In this way the differences in moisture and temperature between the center and outside of the pile are evened out. • If the compost container is full, or the pile is high enough, fresh material should be placed in a second bin or the pile extended.” Conclusio:

In comparison with the Green Bin until now homecomposting is uncomfortable - right done because of the need of building up the pile in layers and the need of periodical turning over, not right done unhygienic with unpleasent odors.

So one cannot be surprised, that even in countries with composting tradition like Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland ... not more than ca. 40% of family house owners practise home-composting, the majority prefer the Green Bin with increasing tendency. Improved technics of homecomposting could save Public Budgets of € 1 billion/year Only in Germany with 19 mio family houses with garden Public Budgets could save: ca. 11 million houses x costs of Green Bin € 100,--/year = € 1.100.000.000,-- /year Many attempts therefore have been made to avoid the referred disadvantages of home composting, several are presented here:

Schnellkomposter:
