Home Spelling Practice

Dear Family,

You can help your child succeed by spending time at home each week examining and writing the spelling words together. Make a game of spelling practice. Many simple games such as “Tic-Tac-Toe,” “I Spy,” and “Simon Says” can be adapted to include spelling words.

Spelling Connections Grade 8

Your child will use the Spelling Connections program this year. Each week, the lesson will focus on a Spelling Strategy that describes a common spelling rule or principle. The spelling words on the list for that week will illustrate the Spelling Strategy.

The Spelling Study Strategy is a method for studying any spelling word. Help your child make a habit of using it for spelling practice. Follow these steps: 1. Look at the word. 2. Say the letters in the word. Think about how each sound is spelled. 4. See the word in your mind. Spell the word to yourself. 5. Write the word. 6. Check your spelling against the spelling in the book. Your child will also grow as a speller by writing stories, diaries, signs, and letters at home. Encourage your son or daughter to write frequently while playing and exploring hobbies and during quiet times. Enjoy writing together! Sincerely,

Práctica de ortografía para el hogar

Spelling Connections Grade 8

Copyright © Zaner-Bloser, I nc.

2. Digan las letras de la palabra. Observen cómo se deletrea cada sonido. 3. Tapen la palabra con la mano o cierren los ojos. 4. Vean la palabra mentalmente. Deletreen la palabra para sí. 5. Escriban la palabra. 6. Comparen su ortografía con la ortografía en el libro. La ortografía de su hijo(a) se mejorará a medida que escriba cuentos, diarios, y letreros en casa. Anime a su hijo(a) a escribir frecuentemente mientras juega, explora los pasatiempos y durante las horas tranquilas. ¡Disfruten la escritura juntos! Sinceramente,

Your support, encouragement, and involvement are vital to your child’s education. Therefore, throughout the school year you will periodically receive letters with suggestions for helping your child practice spelling and writing skills. These activities and games will also provide opportunities for you and your child to work together enjoyably and productively.

1. Spelling Connections Grade 8

Accurate spelling is necessary for effective writing. Throughout Zaner-Bloser’s Spelling Connections, your child will be encouraged to use his or her spelling and writing skills to convey thoughts, ideas, and feelings in practical and imaginative ways.

Ask your child to spell each of the words in the following list first orally and then in writing. Check your child’s work. Did this method help your student?

1. Spelling Connections Grade 8

As you work with your child, keep in mind how he or she learns best. Some students need to see the word spelled correctly and to write the word to determine whether it looks right. Others learn best by repeating the sequence of letters to themselves. Still other students seem to learn best by writing the word several times, possibly with different instruments such as pen, pencil, marker, or chalk.

At the beginning of your child’s turn, pronounce one of the spelling words and have her or him spell it aloud or write it on a piece of paper. If your child spells the word correctly, he or she may have an extra turn. If the word is spelled incorrectly, your child loses his or her turn. Tell or show the correct spelling and have him or her repeat it or write it before continuing.

Newspaper Reporter Ask your child to pretend that he or she is a newspaper reporter or a magazine editor. Have him or her write an article using as many of the words for review in this unit as possible. Perhaps the family would like to create a family newsletter with various members contributing articles. Ask your child to glue the articles to several sheets of notebook paper and to draw illustrations to accompany the articles. Put the newsletter in a binder and show it to the members of your family.

Guessing Game Have your child write on small cards twenty spelling words she or he is having trouble with. Deal them facedown to the two of you. Take turns giving each other clues and guessing the words. Give one clue—a synonym or related word—at a time. If she or he guesses the word after one clue, give 5 points; after two clues, 3 points; after three clues, 1 point. After the word is guessed, have your child write the word on a separate piece of paper. Award 2 extra points for each correctly spelled word.

Anagrams Use letter tiles from games or magnetic letters you may have at home for this activity. If you do not have letter tiles at home, have your child write spelling words on cards and then cut the letters apart. Have your child use all the letters in a spelling word and manipulate them to form different words. For example, the word regal can be rearranged to form glare, and docile can be turned into coiled.

Oral History Have your child record an oral history from a family or community member. The history may be a short piece on careers, family trips, family recipes, or a memorable day. Have your child write several questions to ask as starters. Encourage him or her to use spelling words whenever possible. After recording the person’s recollections, have your child transcribe the tape. He or she may wish to edit and rewrite the written material into a short story to share with other family members.

Up Close and Personal The words on the list for this unit come from place names or people’s names. Help your child prepare a table that shows which category fits each word on the list. Make a visit to your local library and use reference books that the librarian might recommend to look up the history of the names of the places and the people who gave origin to these words.

Fish for Words Write words from the list for this unit onto cards and cut the words into prefixes and roots. Put prefixes in one bowl and roots in another. Take one card from each bowl without looking and see if a word can be formed from the prefix and root you withdrew. If a word can be formed, put the cards aside and try again. If no word can be formed, put the cards back in the bowls and it becomes the next person’s turn. The person who makes the most words wins.

Time to Celebrate Invite friends and family to an end-of-the-school year celebration. Plan to play word games for entertainment. Have writing and spelling contests. Allow your child to think up games you could play, or play some of the games suggested in this year’s take-home spelling activities. Make refreshments in the shape of letters of the alphabet, or a cake in the form of the initials of your child’s name. Give word-related prizes such as small dictionaries, etc. Have fun!
