HOME AWAY FROM HOME 2015-2016 A Year in Review

Dear Friends, When asked what KleinLife means to them, our members and participants immediately say it is their

“home away from home.”

It is no wonder how true that statement actually is when we provide a safe haven for children, a strong lifeline for older adults and a welcoming community for Russian immigrants. Just last year alone we had more than 800,000 visits by over 35,000 people who were able to enjoy social, educational, cultural, human services and wellness programs. We also give relief to over 700 seniors each week who are isolated in their home with nothing to eat; to over 5,000 New Americans wanting to become a part of our community; and to so many more individuals and families who need our help. Each day more and more people come through our doors seeking refuge and we are thankful that we can continue to provide for them. We want to thank our board of directors, funding partners, volunteers and staff who make all of this possible throughout the year. Our milestones and more in this annual report would not have been achievable without their help. We are incredibly proud to lead this vital and relevant organization and we hope you will share this pride with us! We know that with your sustained help in the years to come, KleinLife will continue to function as a leader in providing services for this diverse community throughout Greater Philadelphia.

May we go strength to strength.

Sincerely,

Stephen B. Klein Chairman

Andre Krug President & CEO

Celebrating 40! In 2009, with the dissolution of Philadelphia’s central JCC administrative body, the Raymond and Miriam Klein JCC was recreated as a new agency. In 2015, the agency was rebranded as KleinLife, to more accurately reflect its diverse programming for individuals from 2 to 102. The senior administrative staff, Andre Krug, Barbara Shotz, Sherry Mann and Victoria Faykin took hold of the operations, and through their efforts the agency thrived, finishing five fiscal years in a row in the black with an expanded agenda and schedule.

In honor of this amazing accomplishment,

WE CELEBRATED THE PAST 40 YEARS

with a stellar anniversary party with 350 invited guests who shared in watching a special video presentation, music, fine food and spirits. The highlight of the evening was the individual recognition of each administrative staff member who continues to move KleinLife forward every day.

“Every day…I am doing what I love as the KleinLife Librarian and I can’t wait to see the people at KleinLife. If I don’t see them, I miss them…I just love this place. I hope it stays here forever.” – EDITH KUTCHER, Centenarian

Honoring Our Centenarians Over the past 3 years, 58 centenarians were honored at our annual Northeast Philadelphia Centenarian Luncheon. We are fortunate to be able to celebrate this special milestone with them year after year. During the celebrations, the centenarians were feted at lunch, received commendations from government representatives, were entertained by the Mummers and enjoyed musical tributes from Marilyn Monroe to Elvis Presley to Frank Sinatra.

REFERRALS to vulnerable seniors and their famiies

Generation to Generation Through a generous “Generation to Generation” grant, 31 middle and high school students had the opportunity to interview holocaust survivors about their personal dark, tragic and inhumane histories in the Former Soviet Union during World War II. The interviews became essays and have been compiled into a printed book. This one-of-a-kind experience for both the survivors and students has helped in passing on the strength of our ancestors and a part of our Jewish history and wisdom.

“Interviewing my grandmother was an inspiring and eye-opening experience for me. I have heard stories, read novels and learned about the Holocaust in school, but hearing firsthand the atrocities that my grandmother had to face as a Jew during the war felt incredibly personal compared to anything I have ever studied.” – LILY ROVENSKAYA

“KleinLife strengthened the Jewish pride in not only my children, but in myself. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to participate in their learning. I absolutely loved the challah and Chanukah cookie baking, as well as the fun trips. I know my children loved it as much as I did and we’re looking forward to another school year.” – PROGRAM PARENT

500+

Jewish Sunday Children’s Program Close to 50 children and their families had the opportunity to participate in the first year of our New American Jewish Family Program. In addition to learning Jewish traditions and holidays, the students and their parents learned how to bake challah, set up a Passover Seder plate and speak Hebrew. This past spring, we hosted a special program celebrating different cultures that make up America and our students sang the Israeli nation anthem “Hatikvah.”

“When I retired, I knew that volunteering for Cook For a Friend was going to give me my sense of purpose. I find that cooking meals with a dedicated, awesome group of friends not only puts a smile on my own face, but I know it makes the seniors that receive them unbelievably happy. This is what keeps me coming back to the KleinLife kitchen.” – LYNORE EISMAN
