Soup Run Ministry Dear Fellow Parishioners On March 27th, we served 125 delicious meals of pasta, veggies, hot coffee and treats to a large group on 33rd Street in Manhattan. Our youth outdid themselves - 11 year old Anastasia Herzegovitch baked and decorated more than 100 sugar cookies and happily gave them to all who stopped by. As a few of us talked with a shivering homeless man, John, who brought us to tears with his plight as a cancer patient given only months to live, Dean Gianaris quietly took off his sweatshirt and gave it to him. John asked that we include him in our prayers. The compassion shown to those we serve through our homeless outreach is endless. And the generosity of all who offer the gifts of their time, talent and treasure is priceless. Thank you.

YOUNG AT HEART Over 50 members attended the March 6th Young at Heart meeting. A lenten luncheon was served followed by donated lenten desserts. Father Nick led the group in prayer for lent and then a discussion on the Foundation of Holy Trinity was led by board members. After being postponed because of inclement weather, the social luncheon at the Beehive restaurant in Armonk was re-scheduled for Thursday, March 27th. On Mother’s Day, May 11th, there will be an artoclasia for the senior members of Holy Trinity church. We will again host the agape hour. Chairman, Eleni Passalaris welcomes any donations of pastries. Look for future events in the Sunday church bulletin.

We’re Cooking For HOPE …join us! Each month during the Lenten season our Community will be cooking for the HOPE Soup Kitchen of New Rochelle. In the last 12 months the demand for HOPE’s services has increased by 44%. Not only are the numbers increasing, the demographics are changing as well. They are now seeing an increase in women with children, entire families, and elderly clients on a fixed income. These are people who have never been to a soup kitchen or food pantry before. They are the newly unemployed, people whose unemployment benefits have run out, people whose hours have been cut. Many of these people are now being forced to choose between paying rent and buying food. All of these people depend on the HOPE Soup Kitchen for a hot meal……The HOPE Soup Kitchen is their best hope. Join us.

HOLY TRINITY SCHOLARSHIPS

Dear Parishioners: Our Holy Trinity community and the families of those with scholarship funds have been very proud to provide scholarships annually to our young men and women who further their education in a college or university. There are several memorial scholarships that are made possible by the constant support of the families of those whom we love and have in our memory forever at Holy Trinity. In addition, there is also a Holy Trinity scholarship that is supported by our own community members for our students. These scholarships are given to the students of our community who are needy and worthy. In order for these scholarships to continue and grow, we need the support of our community. The more financial support we receive, the more we can provide to these young people to help them offset the high costs of education today. Those who wish to establish or create a scholarship fund in memory of a loved one or on behalf of their living family may do so as long as the donation is for an amount over $5,000. Funds under this amount will be placed into the general church scholarship fund. The Scholarship Committee of Helen Morik, Art Prifti, and Dr. Nikolaos Skubas. Please make a tax-deductible donation towards these scholarships by mailing a check to the church office – Att: Scholarship Committee. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us or see us in church.

Holy Trinity Church Scholarship for Applicants Holy Trinity Church, through the loyal support of our parishioners and various families over the years, has made it possible for scholarships to be given to those in our community who have grown through our church. The scholarships are given to the youth of our church, whose families are members in good standing in our community for at least the last two previous consecutive years. Any youth planning to attend Hellenic College/Holy Cross Seminary will be given special consideration. These scholarships are meant to assist in offsetting the high costs of today’s education and to show our love and appreciation for our youth. If you plan to attend the college this fall, please fill out and send your application and documents to the church office. The sealed envelope will be forwarded to an external independent party for review. The independent party will review all applications and send us his objective feedback on the qualifications of each applicant. (Please note: all applications and financial aid forms will be kept in strictest confidentiality and will be available only to the independent party, the priest, and the two chairpersons of the committee.) The committee and Fr. Nicholas Anctil will then recommend to the Church Board, the scholarship recipients, amounts, and number of awards based on funds collected. The independent reviewer will make his decisions based on the following criteria: Need, scholastic qualification, commitment, initiative, individual responsibility, participation in school, community and church related activities. A personal record with these criteria above, submitted by the applicant, will support the academic record, which may not include exceptional grades. To apply, please mail: Completed application forms; Financial Aid Form (FAF) from school; High school transcript; One letter of recommendation from a professor, dean, etc. and; A personal essay of not more than 1,000 words indicating extra-curricular activities, personal honors gained and achievements, church involvement and participation and indicate why you feel Holy Trinity church should invest in your future. Holy Trinity Library Kali Anastasi! Many of us think about Lent primarily in terms of fasting. This is also a special time for learning and reflecting on our beliefs and how we live them. The library is very well stocked with books that help in preparing us for the very holy Easter holiday. Donations to the library are a wonderful way to remember beloved family members and friends. Gail and Joe Piserchia and Gary Matson donated money for a new chair for the library in memory of Louise Panos. We have also acquired a number of books recently, each given in memory of someone special. Joseph and Demetra Keane donated the following: in memory of John Panas

Organ transplants should never be commercialized nor coerced nor take place without proper consent, nor place in jeopardy the identity of the donor or recipient, through, for example, the use of animal organs. The death of the donor should never be hastened in order to harvest organs for transplantation to another person.

A major and overarching concern of the Church arises with its commitment to the God-given sanctity of human life. Some of the developments of the biological manipulation of human life, though promising and amazing therapeutic achievements, may also be understood as undermining respect for the integrity of human existence. Others may be seen as providing new means of healing human illness. Discerning the difference is the challenge Cremation the Church faces in developing its teaching on these newly Because the Orthodox Faith affirms the fundamental appearing issues. goodness of creation, it understands the body to be an integral part of the human person and the temple of the Holy Spirit, and Human Life expects the resurrection of the dead. A baptized Orthodox Christian whose wedding has not been blessed by the Orthodox Church is no longer in good standing with the Church, and may not receive the Sacraments of the Church, including Holy Communion, or become a Sponsor of an Orthodox Marriage, Baptism or Chrismation.

PASTORAL GUIDLINES A non-Orthodox Christian who marries an Orthodox Christian does not thereby become a member of the Orthodox Church, and may not receive the Sacraments, including Holy Communion, or be buried by the Church, serve on the Parish Council, or vote in parish assemblies or elections. To participate in the Church’s life, one must be received into the Church by the Sacrament of Baptism or, in the case of persons baptized with water in the Holy Trinity, following a period of instruction, by Chrismation. Inter-religious Marriages Canonical and theological reasons preclude the Orthodox Church from performing the Sacrament of Marriage for couples where one partner is Orthodox and the other partner is a non-Christian. As such, Orthodox Christians choosing to enter such marriages fall out of good standing with their Church and are unable to actively participate in the life of the Church. While this stance may seem confusing and rigid, it is guided by the Orthodox Church’s love and concern for its member’s religious and spiritual well-being. Prohibited Marriages The following types of relationships constitute impediments to marriage: 1. Parents with their own children, grandchildren or greatgrandchildren. 2. Brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. 3. Uncles and aunts with nieces and nephews. 4. First cousins with each other. 5. Foster parents with foster children or foster children with the children of foster parents. 6. Godparents with godchildren or godparents with the parents of their godchildren. DIVORCE The parish priest must exert every effort to reconcile the couple and avert a divorce. However, should he fail to bring about a reconciliation, after a civil divorce has been obtained, he will transmit the petition of the party seeking the ecclesiastical divorce, together with the decree of the civil divorce, to the Spiritual Court of the Archdiocesan District or Metropolis. The petition must include the names and surnames of the husband and wife, the wife’s surname prior to marriage,

their addresses, the name of the priest who performed the wedding, and the date and place of the wedding. The petitioner must be a member of the parish through which he or she is petitioning for divorce. Orthodox Christians of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese who have obtained a civil divorce but not an ecclesiastical divorce may not participate in any sacraments of the Church or serve on the Parish Council, Archdiocesan District Council, Metropolis Council or Archdiocesan Council until they have been granted a divorce by the Church. BAPTISMS A person who wishes to sponsor a candidate for Baptism or Chrismation must be an Orthodox Christian in good standing and a supporting member of an Orthodox parish. A person may not serve as a godparent if the Church has not blessed his or her marriage or, if civilly divorced, he or she has not been granted an ecclesiastical divorce, or for any other reason he or she is not in communion with the Orthodox Church. Baptisms may not be performed during Holy Week or on any of the Great Feastdays of the Lord. FUNERALS Funeral services are permitted on any day of the year, except for Sundays and Holy Friday, unless permission is granted by the Archbishop or Metropolitan. MEMORIALS Memorial services may not be chanted from the Saturday of Lazarus through the Sunday of Thomas, on any Feastday of the Lord or any Feastday of the Theotokos.

FASTING Just as there are times for feasting, there are also times set aside for fasting. During these periods, certain foods are prohibited. These are, in order of frequency of prohibition, meat (including poultry), dairy products, fish, olive oil and wine. Fruits, vegetables, grains and shellfish are permitted throughout the year. Of course, the Orthodox Church never reduces the practice of fasting to a legalistic observance of dietary rules. Fasting, that is not accompanied by intensified prayer and acts of charity, inevitably becomes a source of pride. The Church also recognizes that not everyone can fast to the same degree, and assumes that individual Christians will observe the fast prescribed for them by their Spiritual Fathers. The following are fasting days and seasons: 1. All Wednesdays and Fridays, except for those noted below; 2. The day before the Feast of Theophany (January 5);

7. Fast for the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 1-14, excluding August 6, on which fish, wine and olive oil are permitted); 8. Beheading of St. John the Baptist (August 29), 9. Exaltation of the Holy Cross (September 14);and 10. Nativity Lent (November 15-December 24, although fish, wine and olive oil are permitted, except on Wednesdays and Fridays, until December 17). The following are fasting days on which fish, wine and olive oil are permitted: 1. The Feast of the Annunciation (March 25, unless it falls outside the Great Lent, in which case all foods are permitted); 2. Palm Sunday; 3. The Feast of the Transfiguration (August 6);and 4. The Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Mother of God (November 21).

Dear Fellow Parishioners, Please allow me to express my sincerest thanks and heartfelt appreciation to everyone in the parish who reached out to me and my family these last few weeks during the illness and passing of my father, Gerald Anctil. My family was overwhelmed with emotion upon seeing the presence of so many of you at his funeral on March 26th, along with the floral arrangements, the donations to our Church and the beautiful cards which you have sent us. We are all thankful to God for his almost 78 years of a life well led and much, much enjoyed. Please accept my thanks, on behalf of my brother John and his family, and of course Cyndi, Kalli and Chris for all that you have done to ease the burden of our loss. We love you all.
