Holy Spirit Parish CHRISTMAS

Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord 25 December 2016 to our celebration of Christmas! We can never celebrate Christmas in isolation — from one another or from the world. Indeed worship is necessarily an experience of the community. It’s one of the few occasions of life in which we gather with people with whom we may have little or nothing in common, other than a shared conviction to follow a certain way of being, of loving and living. It’s a way that originates in the story we hear at Christmas, but which bends its way to the cross and the empty tomb and the vast corners of the world where this child’s legacy continues to unfold. Indeed our gathering and going forth is essential to that legacy. Our Christmas worship is a renewal of the desire we share as disciples to follow the star of Christ; not to hide from the messiness of the world, but to blend the fragrance and spice of the gospel into the realities we confront, as individuals, as a community, as people who journey along the way.

1 - “O Come All Ye Faithful”

O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heav’n above! Glory to God, all glory in the highest; O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be all glory giv’n; Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord! 2 - Psalm 98, “All the Ends of the Earth”

3 - “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” It came upon the midnight clear, That glorious song of old, From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold: “Peace on the earth, good will to all From heaven’s all gracious King”; The world in solemn stillness lay, To hear the angels sing. Yet with the woes of sin and strife, The world has suffered long; Beneath the heav’nly hymn have rolled Two thousand years of wrong; And warring humankind hears not The tidings which they bring; O hush the noise and cease your strife And hear the angels sing.

Profession of Faith (Apostles’ Creed) Bow when reciting the words in italics

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

4 - “Night of Silence”

“Silent Night”

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright Round yon Virgin Mother and Child, Holy Infant so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight; Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing alleluia; Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ, the Savior, is born! Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. 5 - Eucharistic Prayer: Mass of Redemption Preface

6 - “Wood of the Cradle”

7 - “O Little Town of Bethlehem” O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see the lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by; Yet in the dark streets shineth The everlasting Light; The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight. How silently, how silently, The wondrous gift is giv’n! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of his heav’n. No ear may hear his coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still The dear Christ enters in.

8 - “The First Nowell” The first Nowell, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. refrain: Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. They looked up and saw a star Shining in the east, beyond them far, And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. refrain And by the light of that same star Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a king was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. refrain This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. refrain Then entered in those wise men three, Full rev’rently upon their knee, And offered there, in his presence, Their gold and myrrh and frankincense. refrain Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heav’nly Lord; Who with the Father we adore And Spirit blest for evermore. refrain 9 - “Away in a Manger” Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay. The cattle are lowing; the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love you, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky, And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask you to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in your tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with you there. 10 - “Lulajze, Jezuniu” / “Lullaby Sweet Jesus” Lulajze, Jezuniu, moja perelko, Lulajze Jezuniu, me piescidelko. Refrain: Lulajze, Jezuniu, lulajze, lulaj, A Ty Go Matuchno w placzu tulaj. Lulajze, Jezuniu, lulajze, lulaj, A Ty Go Matuchno w placzu utulaj. Lullaby dear Jesus, pearl very precious, Lullaby dear Jesus, sleep now, your cries hush. Lullaby, dear Jesus, lullaby baby, Sleep infant beloved, mother will lull thee. Lullaby, dear Jesus, lullaby baby, Sleep infant beloved, mother will lull thee.

12 - “Joy to the World”

Joy to the world! the Lord is come: Let earth receive her King; Let ev’ry heart prepare him room, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and nature sing, And heav’n and heav’n and nature sing. Joy to the world! the Savior reigns: Let us, our songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. No more let sin and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make his blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of his righteousness, And wonders of his love, And wonders of his love, And wonders, wonders of his love.
