OCTOBER 2016

Welcome to our Autumn newsletter as we come towards the close of a successful half term at Holmer Green. As I wrote to you recently, we had another impressive set of results at both GCSE and in the Sixth Form during the summer and these are now available to view on our website. On the evidence of how well the students have started this academic year we are anticipating further success in 2017. The school’s reputation is clearly on the up and up and we were astonished by the number of visitors we had to our Open Evening and who have since been to visit during the school day. I am constantly being complimented on the maturity and politeness of my students as well as for the passion and dedication of my staff. It certainly is a privilege to be the headteacher of this school. For this newsletter I want to send out a huge thank you to the dedicated parents who make up our Parents Association and who do so much to raise funds for our school. Last Friday we hosted our superb Quiz Night where – although I was not on the winning team – I was cheered to see over a hundred parents and friends of the school coming to support us. I am always so grateful to all parents who support the school as your encouragement is not only a vital part of your children’s progress but helps energise my staff who give up so much of their time and effort to ensure that every child at Holmer Green succeeds. I also wanted to take the opportunity to promote our Parent Partnership Meetings. These are held each term and are an opportunity for parents to bring along any questions for myself or my senior leaders in an open forum. All the parents who regularly attend tell me they find them very informative events so I would really encourage as many of you as possible to come along. Our next Parent Partnership meeting is Thursday 2 March at 7.30 pm. We are also attaching the minutes of the meeting held on 21 September for you information. On a final note, I am sure I don’t need to remind you how congested Parish Piece can become both immediately before and after the school day and thus if at all possible I urge parents not to drop off their children outside the school gate but to use the roads adjacent to Parish Piece and if driving or parking nearby you are respectful of our neighbours and the entrances to their homes. I wish one and all a restful half term and urge Year 11 to plan their revision wisely so they have time to work and play during the week.

Summer Concert The summer concert feels like an eternity ago! But I would like to congratulate the wonderful students of Holmer Green Senior School who were amazing. The talent at each concert gets better and better. Thank you to Mia Festorrazi who took the wonderful photographs.

Message from the Deputy Headteacher Dear Parents and Carers It has been an exciting and busy start to the new academic year. Students in Year 7 to 11 will shortly be receiving their first report of the year. As you may be aware, GCSEs are changing and in response to this we are changing the nature of our assessment. Students in Years 7 to 10 will receive a fine graded 1-9 level (for example, 5 low, 5 medium or 5 high), reflecting where teachers feel students are currently performing. Students in Year 11 will receive a fine graded 1-9 working at grade and predicted grade in English literature, English language and mathematics. All other GCSEs for Year 11 are being assessed under the A* to G framework and hence students in Year 11 will receive a fine graded A* to G working at grade and predicted grade for these subjects. Reports for students in Year 7 and 8 will contain an equivalence table between the new 1-9 grades and the old style Key Stage Three levels, and students in Years 9 to 11 will contain an equivalence table between the new 1-9 grades and the A* to G GCSE grades with which with you will be familiar. Please do note that these tables are provided for reference and reflect a broad rather than an exact equivalence between the levels. I want students and families to receive assessment information that is informative, accurate and reflective of the hard work that students put in. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. Best wishes Peter Tang Deputy Headteacher

Bucks New Uni Workshop The Events Management course from Bucks New Uni came to school on Wednesday 12th October to deliver a wonderful seminar on planning an event. This works with the Sixth Form as they are planning a Festival on 1st April 2017. They have taken a lot away from the seminar and the festival plans to be an exciting event. Miss E Baddeley

Year 7 Experience Day Ian Rose (GB Paralympian Judo) headed an all star cast of athletes who have banded together to inspire and educate students. Chris Cook (GB Olympic Breaststroke Swimmer), Tim Prendergast (New Zealand Paralympian middle distance runner) and Mike Mullen (GB BMX Champion) all ran masterclass sessions throughout the day using their sports to enthuse the students and provide specific messages on communication, resilience, confidence and determination. The students had the opportunity to speak individually with these inspirational athletes, they were able to see and hold Gold medals, take individual photo's with the athletes and collect autographs. The students completed both practical and theoretical sessions rotating through the four athletes throughout the day culminating in producing three long term goals for any specific element of their education or sport. These goals will be monitored throughout the year by our fantastic form tutors with a celebration assembly in the summer where one of our athletes will return with certificates for those who complete them. This was a truly magnificent event that was inspirational and provided the students with enthusiasm for sport and a thirst to succeed. Mr I Coward Key Stage 3 Leader

World Languages Day The MFL Department celebrated World Languages Day on Thursday 18th October. We had French and Spanish food served in the canteen, including pains au chocolat and croissants for breakfast, and the main course menu consisted of paella, tortilla, Bœuf Bourguignon and ratatouille, with mousse au chocolat and crêpes for dessert. It was evidently very popular as most of the food sold out within 15 minutes! Staff were invited to wear clothing associated with a particular country or culture on the day, with some interesting results! Our staff and students are actually quite multilingual, as you can see by checking out the board next to the World Languages display – you will see that we don’t only speak English here at Holmer Green Senior School! We had assemblies the week before World Languages Day, where students were shown a video featuring many of the languages spoken fluently by our students. We are hoping to have this video on the website very soon so do watch out for it! Mrs M Shannon Head of MFL The food was delicious especially the churros. The paella was also great. I wish it was always like this.

I had the churros and they were amazing. The ratatouille was nice however I was full after the churros. Joel Jackson 8Y1

Craig Hooper 8R2

The omelette was amazing, I had never tried it when I lived in Spain. The mousse was really good and bubbly. I wanted to try the churros. Erin Brodelle 8Y1

Yesterday they were selling French and Spanish food. I’m not sure what I had but it was delicious, it was the size of a sausage, wrapped in sugary pastry and it was the best taste I’ve ever had. James Garrett 7G2 I really enjoyed the cheesy pastry with pork and apple and for pudding I had a jam doughnut. Jessica Nathanielsz 7R2

In the News There was an article in the Bucks Free Press regarding our Year 12 Student, Jesper Howe, who took part in the ‘Home to Rome’ bike ride to raise money for charity after he was inspired by close family members affected by cancer. Jesper covered an average of 85 miles a day, also climbed more than 40,000 feet which is equal to one and a half times the height of Everest. Together with a 40 strong team from Inspired Living, 16-year-old Jesper Howe rode 1140 miles in the searing heat from August 20 to September 4, which saw him raise more than £3,200 for Cancer Research. At the end of his journey, Jesper decided to dedicate his ride to Hughenden Valley resident and family friend, Andy Graham, who is currently in hospital and is travelling a much harder path. Well done Jesper!

Try this for a stress free day at school. Before you leave home each morning ask yourself the question “Do I need, have I got”…………………………………PE kit, locker key, homework, food tech ingredients, books, pencil case, planner, lunch, sQuid card, etc. etc. etc.

Please remember we are unable to open lockers, unable to lend money for lunch, unable to lend ties and unable to allow constant calls home.

REMEMBER YOUR THINGS!

Jeans for Genes We are pleased to let you know we raised £628.54 on Jeans for Genes Day! Many thanks for your all donations!

We would respectfully remind parents about road safety and congestion in Parish Piece at the beginning and end of the school day. There have been a few incidents/near misses recently. Please DO NOT drive into Parish Piece when dropping or collecting students. Thank you.

Many thanks to the Parents' Association for the fabulous Quiz Night evening on Friday 14 October. A great social evening for Parents, Staff and Governors with 100 people attending!

Reporting an Absence If your child is absent from school for whatever reason please call the Attendance Office on 01494 719901 each morning. Alternatively please email [email protected] If a student arrives late or leaves early, they must sign in/out on the fire register in the medical room. Thank you. Sandra Melhuish

Art Department The Year 12 Art Textile students will be soon looking at various forms of knitting. They will need tons of wool to make large scale pieces like the one featured. If anyone has any wool they could donate to the art department, we would greatly appreciate it! We are also looking for old maps, old dress patterns, material, old copies of "House and Home", Vogue and other high quality design magazines.

Tylers Green has talent! Once again students at HGSS have taken a number of prizes at a local art competition. Sean Varney, Manager at The CO OP was asked to judge the Schools Art Competition this year as part of The Hazlemere Fete. The CO OP sponsored the competition on the theme of “Food” and Sean had the very difficult and mouth-watering job of selecting the winners out of a record number of 116 entries this year. Sean said “It is very difficult to pick a winner! The children put a lot of effort into the competition.” The winner of Key Stage 4 was Jamie Kendrick from Holmer Green Senior School. Jamie produced an acrylic painting on calico with stitching embellishment of a cupcake complete with a cherry on top. Other winners were Lara Morton and Kim Rickards. All the entrants had their works exhibited in the main hall of Hazlemere Community Centre on the day of the fete and this attracted a lot of interest and admiration.

The Year 810students gained A*-100%-(full marks) in their Art and Design GCSE. They will be receiving letters from the examination board congratulating them on their success. Their work showed skill and flair, above and beyond the GCSE expectations. The image is one of the outcomes produced by A* (100%) student Abigail Baker. Other students gained A* narrowly missing full marks by one mark! 100% students were Abigail Baker Bethany Taylor Rebecca Lyle Rachel Dee Sophie Lane Lorna Werrell Zainab Iqbal Anya Naumovic Ellie Hennequin Rosa Shaw

Sarah Edwards also gained 100%-full marks at A/S and A level with Emily Shaw and Stephanie Gaynard getting 100% for A2-year 2 We are VERY proud of ALL the students who worked tirelessly to achieve their very best.

This beautiful textiles piece is part of a series produced by Charlotte Keen in Year 11. Charlotte has been working with Mrs Tebbs to learn specific machine embroidery skills. She is currently looking at artists such as Cas Holmes and Mrs Bertimus, who are contemporary textile artists who use fabric and thread. Charlotte is one of our best textile artists. She works incredibly hard to learn new techniques, and to develop innovative pieces that show a range of materials. We are very proud of her achievements!

OUR BUSIEST OPEN EVENING EVER! More than 560 prospectus packs were handed out to visitors on the evening of 6th October! Parents and visitors were given guided tours of the school by staff and students. The main hall was also packed - twice, in two sessions - to hear a welcoming speech from our Headteacher, Mr Michael Jones. Parents heard that Holmer Green Senior School continues to build on its reputation as one of the highest achieving non-selective schools in the country, with 42% of all grades A* - B - far above the national average. Life at Holmer Green Senior School also centres on three unique features: Adaptable - Holmer Green Senior School invests in high quality teaching and staff ready themselves for changes well in advance, so that students can achieve results far ahead of their peers. Relationships - We are a small school. It means we can give our students and parents more time and attention and push them to the top grades. Our pastoral care is also second to none. High attainment - Results at GCSE are significantly higher than the National averages - particularly for the highest grades. Our Sixth Form results this summer were the best in the school's history. Every one of our Sixth Form students completing this year was able to access the university of his or her choice. Visitors around the school were also not only able to see some of our state-of-theart facilities, such as our new Business Centre and our highly equipped Technology Centre, but were also able to get a sense of the atmosphere and ethos of the school.

"I just wanted to write and say how impressed I was this evening at your open event. Although there were clearly much higher numbers attending than anticipated your staff and pupils coped admirably". - Visitor

"I joined Holmer Green in Year 7 and it was the hardest and most important decision I had to make because I wasn't sure of what I wanted from a secondary school and there were so many to choose from. However, within the first week I knew I had come to the right school". - Sixth Form student

"The students we met were extremely courteous, engaging and smartly dressed, and managing to remain enthusiastic and upbeat despite being so busy. There was a real sense of pride in their school. " - Visitor

Events in Drama this Year….Sept 2016 – July 2017 Film and TV workshop run by Eliot at MN Academy in Windsor on Monday 12 September 2016 Year 12 and 13 Sixth Form students and selected gifted and talented GCSE students took part in a film and TV workshop. The purpose of the event was to expose students to the different and contrasting world of TV and film and how to prepare for a casting audition. A number of students performed their pieces and were able to see how different an actor looks behind the camera, especially a close up shot, compared to on stage. The students learnt the different elements and skills required for a TV casting and how different these were for a stage audition. The Sixth Form students learnt some improvisational techniques to help them ‘lift a script off the page’ and perform in a very short amount of time. MN Academy were impressed with our students and would like to invite them to a free Open Day Workshop on 15 October.

Special effects make-up work shop run by Kate Griffiths on Monday 10 October 2016 GCSE and BTEC Drama students in Year’s 9, 10, 12 and 13 took part in a Special Effects make-up workshop. The students learnt how to realistically create ‘casualty room’ effects such as cuts from glass, bruises, burns and broken limbs. They also looked into special effects for horror. The work shop will be invaluable for students as they work through their devising units this year: Year 9 will be doing drama pieces based on teenage gangs and peer pressure and Year 10 will be using The Woman In Black play as a starting point for their drama. The Sixth Form BTEC students enjoyed the opportunity to work with the make-up products as they prepare to make their university choices and also in preparation for their site specific Drama assessment in December. theatricalmakeupartist.com Next month in Drama... students interested in the Tech side of Drama will be taking place in a lighting and sound workshop.... GCSE Drama will see The Woman In Black at The Fortune Theatre.

Please see our website for all future dates of scheduled trips and school events. Holiday dates and letters sent to parents are also available on here.

Updates—Information—Achievements

SIXTH sense Dear Parents or Carers Welcome to our first edition of Sixth Sense for this academic year; the Sixth Form Newsletter that raises students’ and parents’ awareness of Sixth Form life at Holmer Green Senior School and celebrates our achievements, and I’m very proud to say, we have such a lot of achievement to celebrate. I can’t begin without congratulating our Year 13 leavers from last year for gaining the best A Level and BTEC Grades in the school’s history. In the Summer they achieved 78% A* - C grades in their A Levels and a 100% A* - E pass rate; an extremely impressive set of results. The BTEC results were equally impressive, with 93% of entries gaining a Distinction* which is worth the same amount of UCAS points as an A* at A Level, in fact 100% of our BTEC entrants achieved a Distinction or Distinction*. Further to that amazing statistic, 100% of our students who applied to Universities through UCAS were placed at their first choice university. A fantastic achievement.

the new academic year with enthusiasm and making the most of all the opportunities offered to them, including World Challenge, NCS, The Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, The Employability and Community Service Scheme, Reading Mentors, Student Commission, Young Enterprise, ABC, I could go on. We have already had the pleasure of welcoming David Dein, one of the five men who was responsible for setting up the Premier League and Managing Arsenal; who convinced us that with hard work, courage and vision, we can all aspire to great things.

We have such a lot to look forward to, over the next academic year; from the exciting activities planned for our Autumn Enterprise day, to Safe Drive Stay Alive; to our educational trips and motivational speakers, to our work with Elevate consultants who support our students with the new Our current Year 13 students mustn’t be forgotten academic rigours of Level 3 qualifications. in this celebration, as they achieved our strongest AS results also, and I’m sure with their continued I hope you enjoy reading our newsletter, do application and determination we can look forward remember, if you are a Year 11 student or a parent to some equally pleasing results this year. of one, the date for our Sixth Form Open Evening is Thursday 1 December. memories for 2016/17 with a variety of fundraising events already taking place, including a MacMillan Bake Off raising over £150! Articles later on in Sixth Sense show these off nicely. The Management Team have also been busy assigning new roles to students, with Year 13 Subject Mentors now confirmed as well as Lower School Committee Representatives.

Luke and Charlotte here! This is our first update for the 2016/17 academic year at Holmer Green Sixth Form and hasn't it started on a high? The Year 12s are settling in quickly with support and advice from Year 13s to ease them gently into their A-Level studies, it's simply great to see the cooperation We have both thoroughly enjoyed the first half already forming. term trying to find our balance between the Being Head Boy & Head Girl of this Sixth Form is an workload to get the most out of honour and privilege; each and every student our final year here at HGSS. World Challenge Next July, a group of Sixth Formers will be going on a World Challenge expedition to Thailand. The trip will be split into three phases: a trek, a project and a rest and relaxation period. During the community phase, we will be working alongside local organisations to help improve the local community which enables us to gain an insight into other cultures and traditions. I am looking forward to working together as a group when hosting fundraising events for the trip. By taking part in World Challenge I am able to engage in a wider range of cultures and gain skills such as team work which I can then use in the future. Emma Heather, Year 13

Year 12 Student “A huge transition”, that’s what everyone said before I started in Year 12. There’s more work, more independent study and a great deal of time management required. Being in Year 12 for a half term now I feel like I’m starting to get to grips with the work, and amount of time management involved. Sixth Form is a lot different to what I expected and not just down to the work. There’s a lot more freedom, you can manage your studies to how you believe works best, also there are lots of people around for advice and support tailored to your subject matter. I didn’t expect there to be such a large integration between Year 12s and Year 13; although I think that we (as a year) will benefit from this interaction. As they have already completed Year 12 they can answer questions that we need answering, and I know that if I needed something they would be willing to help me with anything I needed. I have enjoyed the transition into Sixth Form, especially the fact I now have more control over my learning. Phoebe Lamb, Year 12 Student

BTEC Drama On Monday 10 October GCSE and BTEC Drama students got the amazing opportunity to take part in a special effects makeup workshop. We created bruises, cuts, burns and wrinkles. We were shown an example by Kate Griffiths and then we were free to let our imaginations run wild, within reason of course!

Everyone had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the day. Emily Green, Year 13 Drama Student

Management Team 2016/17 Head Boy – Luke Seymour Deputy Head Boy – Harry Myall

Head Girl – Charlotte Whitmee Deputy Head Girl – Jenny Savage

Head of PR – Daisy Marjoram Head of Events – Zoe Hart Head of Enterprise – Ellen May The Management Team believed it needed to create some additional roles to stay in communication with the vast range of different school committees. While the Management Team endorse the lower school enthusiasm to participant and arrange school and charity events, we believe having regular contact is essential to making these events as successful as possible. We are happy to announce the new members of our team, as well as the opportunities still to be appointed: Sports Committee Representative – Ben Morgan Student Commission Representative – Matthew Parmenter Anti-Bullying Committee Representative - TBC Subject Mentor Manager - TBC As well as these appointments, the Management Team opened the opportunity even further by having a Secondary Management Team. The members of this team are known throughout the Sixth Form as “Subject Mentors”. This role is voluntary for Year 13 students and is aimed to support Year 12s settle into to their A-Levels and BTEC courses, as well as general Sixth Form life. These students are specialised in their Mentor subject and are happy to help whenever they can. Thank you to all that have volunteered. Luke Seymour, Head Boy

Blue Tongues on Jeans for Genes Day… Jeans for Genes is an innovative, unique and proactive charity that helps support the one in 25 children who are born with a Genetic Disorder in the UK. Every year, Holmer Green Senior School participates in fundraising for the charity by wearing their denim jeans on the annual Jeans for Genes Day which took place on 23rd September 2016. Whilst every student made a generous donation of £1 for wearing their Jeans to school, the Management Team were also able to fundraise an addition of almost £50 by selling bluelemonade fruit punch to the younger years. Despite the teacher’s anxieties that students would have a surge of hyperactivity due to the sugar content, the fruit punch was a hit and the younger years loved the easy but exciting beverage! Daisy Marjoram, Head of PR

MacMillan Bake Off Make, Bake, Cake!! On the 30th of September, the Sixth Form were delighted to be able to take part in the MacMillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning. Unfortunately, 2.5 million people in the UK are living with Cancer today. As a result of this, the Sixth Form felt very passionately about supporting a charity that aims to improve the lives of both the individuals with Cancer and their family and friends. The charity does this by funding support groups, providing medical treatment and aiding the progressions in cancer research. MacMillan campaign the Coffee Morning as the 'World’s Biggest Coffee Morning!' and since the Sixth Form have a number of keen bakers in the mix, it was a pleasure that we were able to bake and host our very own Coffee Morning in support of the Cancer Charity. There were over 30 cakes home baked by students, and a total of 40 cakes of different shapes, sizes, flavours and colours were sold throughout the school. As there were an abundance of cakes brought in, the Sixth Form simply couldn’t stomach them all themselves. However, with the help of the rest of the school and the younger year’s donations, the Sixth Form were able to fundraise a total of £156 Alongside fundraising for the charity, we crowned Niamh Molloy as the Sixth Form’s Star Baker for her chocolate owl muffins… An original, popular and yummy creation; Well Done Niamh! On behalf of the Holmer Green Sixth Form, thank you to the staff and pupils who contributed in the fundraising event. Daisy Marjoram, Head of PR

David Dein Lecture – Monday 10 October 2016 The Sixth Form were privileged to welcome David Dein to the Lecture Theatre this term, to present to us an inspirational lecture on his life and success. David Dein is a name that you might not recognise, unless you are an Arsenal supporter, however if you see his long list of accolades, you soon realise just how important this gentleman is in the world of football. David joined the Arsenal Board in 1983 and was made ViceChairman in the same year. He also rose to Vice-Chairman of the Football Association and has served on numerous UEFA and FIFA Committees. He was the man who had the foresight to bring Arsene Wenger to Arsenal in 1996. During David’s reign, the Club won: The League x 5 The FA Cup x 5 The UEFA Cup Winners Cup x 1 The League Cup x 2 The Community Shield x 5, a total of 18 trophies! We were very fortunate to welcome David, who had just returned from Harvard Business School where he presented a similar lecture, to talk to our Sixth Formers and share his wisdom. David made the reason for wanting to talk to our students clear. He said it is the same reason as everything else he does, and that is: ‘to make a difference’. He believes that in everything you do, the overriding driving factor should be the desire to make that difference. This is also a philosophy we try to engender in our Sixth Form Students. To say this man is passionate about what he does and what he has achieved with the Premier League is a huge understatement. He firmly believes that with Hard work, Courage and Vision, that amazing things can be achieved by anybody. He encouraged our students to be “like a tortoise” and sometimes when you want something badly enough, you just have to “stick your neck out.” He encouraged students to have Pride in everything that they do, and everything they achieve. All the students agreed that the lecture was not only informative and interesting, but totally inspirational as well. Here in front of them was a wealthy, highly travelled, extremely successful head of a massive organisation, who got where he is today through hard work, determination, seizing every opportunity along the way and taking a few risks. All young people must now raise the bar on what they currently think is possible for them to achieve – the possibilities are in fact, without limit! Rachel Golding, Learning Area Director of Sixth Form
