s Traditi Holiday Hillsdale Shopping Center shares its holiday album.

David D. Bohannon, developer of Hillsdale Shopping Center, had a vision—to bring to the city of San Mateo and the Peninsula a shopping destination of the “highest dignity, beauty and convenience.” After 60 holiday seasons, distinction and tradition endure, welcoming generations to come.

Since the 1950s, Hillsdale has been the official local drop off location for the Toys for Tots drive.

Early 1960s holiday celebrations included outdoor ice skating shows and Santa’s arrival on a sleigh pulled by live reindeer.

60 The one-level outdoor mall in 1956 hosted an array of holiday decorations and animated displays that were hand-built and custom-crafted exclusively for the Center.

Skating “Little Snow People” were one of six kiosks housing animated scenes throughout the open-air corridors in the 1970’s.

Hillsdale’s grand opening in 1954 included icon grocer MayFair Market, an original store, around which the Center was built.

Reminisce and enjoy the story as we take a look back. Hillsdale’s Santa Parade in the early 1970s traveled on El Camino Real and along 31st Avenue. Costumed characters passed out balloons to the crowds lining the parade route while awaiting Santa’s arrival.

Along with the 1982 remodel that enclosed and expanded the Center came new holiday décor featuring a towering 15' snowman with mechanical plane, toys and moveable bears. A contest to name the snowman ultimately branded him “Jasper Frost.”

Delighting children in the 1960s, holiday vignettes showcasing fairy tale character animations, such as “The Three Bears,” were placed throughout the Center.

The grand 32' tree is graced by a Bufano penguin sculpture. The statue was one of the many created by renowned artist Benjamino Bufano for Hillsdale Shopping Center. Still on exhibit today, they were originally unveiled in 1956. Photo: 2001.

The Emporium, ribboned in sparkling lights joined Hillsdale in 1962. It was known as “The Big E” back in the day. A beautiful aerial view of Hillsdale, as it appeared through the 60’s and 70’s, revealed the expansive outside areas illuminated by thousands of holiday lights.

The Pear Huckleberry Crisp at Paul Martin’s® American Grill is a festive dessert the whole family will love, with a golden crumbly topping of oats, walnuts, and brown sugar and a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s served warm with fresh pears and indulgently topped with a generous dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream. The Cheesecake Factory® is, of course, famous for its cheesecakes. With dozens of cheesecakes available daily, it’s hard to choose, but one of our favorites is the Pumpkin Cheesecake. Baked in a graham cracker crust and sprinkled with chopped pecans, it’s better than the best pumpkin pie. Tiramisu at Romano’s Macaroni Grill is a classic delight with mascarpone, lady fingers, espresso, rum and cocoa. The Salted Caramel Pudding from California Pizza Kitchen is a decadent choice. Featuring rich caramel pudding, black cocoa cookie crumbs, house-made whipped cream, caramel sauce and natural flaked sea salt. Pear Huckleberry Crisp

Recipe by Paul Martin’s American Grill; Serves 4 To bake, use au gratin dishes found at any cookware retailer. Crisp Topping 1 Quart All Purpose Flour 2 Cups Granulated Sugar 2 Cups Brown Sugar 2 Tablespoons Cinnamon 1 Tablespoon Ground Nutmeg 2 Teaspoons Salt 1 ¼ Pound Butter 2 Cups Chopped Walnuts 2 1⁄2 Cups Oatmeal

Cut butter into medium-sized cubes. Place walnuts in a food processor, and pulse until walnuts are approximately 1 ⁄4-inch pieces. Using a spatula, gently combine all ingredients in mixer. Mix on low speed until it is crumbly and resembles a granola texture. DO NOT OVER MIX! Set aside as you make the filling.

Filling 2 Cups Huckleberries 8 Cups Diced Red Comice Pears 1 Cup Pear Brandy (Paul Martin’s uses Pear Brandy from Clear Creek Distillery) 2 Cups Sugar 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon

Wash and strain the huckleberries to remove as many stems as possible. Peel and dice the pears into ½-inch cubes. Combine all the ingredients and let sit for 5–10 minutes before building the crisps. Fill dishes with 11⁄4 cups of the filling and top with ½ cup of topping. Place on a lined sheet pan and bake in a 400-degree conventional oven until the topping is nicely browned, approximately 20–25 minutes. (For convection ovens, set at 350 degrees for 20–25 minutes.)
