scrap metal. In case the raised floor would be visible through the scrap metal load I glued some household aluminum foil on it to make it blend more in with the load. To fix all the little metal pieces so they would stay in the car even if I turn it upside down I poured thinned withe glue over them. The load will of course not be removable when you do this. My stainless steel pot scrubber load was best suited to represen t production waste from a factory so I wanted to keep the shiny metal look and not paint the load with rust colors. The stainless steel bits were too shiny to look realistic though but that was solved with a coat of flat varnish which subdued the bright chrome look but preserved the true metal look.

board cases. By this time, pallets were commonly used, making it easier for crews to handle with forklifts and hand trucks. If you model an earlier period, you can feature hand-st acked piles of cases.

Opening the structur e doors at the dock and adding some interior detail make a huge impact on the appearance of a building. You don’t need to add interior detail to the entire structure: By fitting a small shadow box behind the doors, you can give the appearance of a lot more detail than is actually there. This is a techniq ue you can use with any type of structur e (storefront, railroad station, house, etc.). Start by preparing the door openings. The original DPM building had heavy cast doors. I replaced these with corrugated roll-up doors, simulated by gluing pieces of corruga ted styrene in 2 each opening, 1. The shadow box is Build a shadow box made from .060" to fit your styrene. The floor is painted Polly Scale Concrete, and the walls are black mat board glued into place (the black will help hide the lack of depth). The walls should be tall enough that viewers won’t be able to see over them. I made the stacks of cardboard boxes as explained in Chapte photographing or finding r 1, by photos of boxes from the period I model. I wound up with cases representing Del Monte vegetables, Campb ell’s Pork and Beans, and Sunshine Krispy Crackers. I made large sections of the Campbell’s cases, and glued the resulting 3 printout to a wood block, 3. The box can then be glued in place behind the door openings. I also made a pallet-s ized stack of the Del Monte cases and glued it atop a Preiser (cast plastic) pallet as the lead photo shows. You can finish the dock itself with additional stacks of cases and other details. My scene has a Kibri forklift, a hand cart from an old Con-Cor detail set, and a couple of Preiser figures. In addition to making your own cases and loads, you can use commercial items as well. Keeping things real

Look over his shoulder, and learn how Pelle Søeborg details a variety of freight cars and locomotives for his contemporary model railroad. This popular Model Railroader contributor explains how to weather locomotives and freight cars using quick and simple techniques that he has developed and refined, whether you need to apply a thin layer of dust or add a ton of rust. He also explains how to create several types of freight loads from common household objects and other supplies. In addition to his detailed, step-by-step photographs, Pelle also includes a gallery of prototype photos that provides a handy resource for weathering and detailing.

In this book, you’ll learn how to complete these projects: • Give an old boxcar a contemporary look • Weather white reefers and black locomotives • Add interesting spills to tank cars • Weather brass locomotives for layout operation • Make scrap metal loads from pot scrubbers • Turn straws into a realistic pipe load • And more! Pelle K. Søeborg, of Denmark, runs his own graphic design business. In the 1990s, several Model Railroader magazines caught his attention, and he has been a model railroader ever since. In 2006, he wrote his first book, Mountain to Desert, which detailed the building of his layout, and he has since written four other books on model railroading.

Hobby Rebuilding a Layout from A-Z

After completing his Daneville & Donner River layout, Pelle Søeborg realized that he could build a better layout, so he did. Pelle kept seeing things he wanted to redo, and as he discovered new techniques and materials, his list of projects grew. Some projects involved major renovation, so it was easier to tear down the Daneville & Donner River layout and start over with a new model railroad, the Union Pacific’s Daneville Subdivision.

Rebuilding a Layout from A-Z

Building a better layout the second time around

Both inspirational and practical, Rebuilding a Layout from A to Z takes you through the complete construction process. Using the lessons Pelle learned from building his previous layout, the book covers benchwork, track, scenery, backdrops, and more. With step-by-step photos, Pelle shows you how to: • Scratchbuild an asphalt transfer terminal • Add sound-deadening roadbed • Make a photographic backdrop • Create better-looking scenery • Build lightweight benchwork • Produce museum-quality fascia and valances

MODEL RAILROADING - LAYOUT DESIGN AND PLANNING SERIES Hobby

Modeling a specific prototype (“real”) railroad is easier now than ever before. The variety of locomotive, rolling stock, and structure models based on specific prototypes has never been greater, and these models come from the factory with a level of detailing that once required lots of aftermarket parts and many hours at the workbench. Model Railroading from Prototype to Layout will guide you as you research and select a prototype railroad to model, then take you through the design and operation of a layout based on that prototype.

This book shows you how to: • Select a prototype railroad to model • Research and find information on real railroads, their equipment, and their surroundings • Design a layout based on prototype principles • Compress prototype scenes while maintaining character and realism • Realistically operate a model railroad • Make and install photographic backdrops of prototype scenes • Add switch machines and other wiring features that won’t interfere with lower decks Koester
