Executive Summary An electronic survey of Control Design readers was conducted in April 2016 in order to identify usage and application trends of HMI, enclosures & industrial PCs among the industrial machine builders that comprise Control Design ’s readership. Detailed survey results are presented on the pages that follow, with key findings summarized below:



The majority of respondents (59.6%) indicated the operator interface hardware installed on their machines was a graphical display with touchscreen, followed by a graphical display with keyboard or other input device (19.1%), a graphical display with multi-touch touch screen technology (13.8%), discrete panel switches and lights only (4.3%) and text-based display with integral input keys (3.2%).



Of those respondents who use graphical display screens the most common size indicated was 6-10 inches (29.3%), followed by 10-14 inches (27.2%), 15-20 inches (20.7 %) and 4-6 inches (10.9%). Only 2.2% of respondents use screens less than four inches while 9.8% use screens 21 inches or greater.



64.9% of respondent’s operator interface screens do not incorporate web browser capability.



When browser capabilities were included, the top main purpose(s) indicated were remote access (50.8%) and troubleshooting information (49.2%); operating data collection (42.4%), machine schematics (20.3%), and update software remotely (18.6%).



The types of devices preferred by those respondents who do use handheld/portable deices are as follows: 1. Plug-in-handheld

46.8% of respondents do not use these devices. •

When respondents specify a PC the majority (50.6%) indicated they normally choose ruggedized industrial PCs for all or part of their machine control. 22.5% choose “White box” PCs, while 27% choose an embedded PC.

In terms of importance of these operating characteristics, respondents ranked the aspects as follows: 1.

Shock/vibration tolerant (88.6% ranked as “important” or “very important”)

Harsh/dirty environment capability (85.1% ranked as “important” or “very important”)

3.

Enhanced operator temperature range (91.3% ranked as “important” or “very important”)



Respondents PC specs include panel mount (47.5%); solid-state storage (55%); low power/low heat CPU (45%); a small footprint (40%); integrated display with touchscreen (37.5%); no cooling fans (43.8%) rack mount (13.8%) and integrated display (37.5%).



67.7% of respondents are not using HMI-controller combo units.
