Hints and tips on how to run a successful 10 Minute Shake Up event

shake up summer Children need a minimum of 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise per day. Doing just 10 minutes of activity as often as they can really does make a big difference. Every child, every day, every 10 minutes counts. Last year, 10 Minute Shake Up got kids active across England. This year, Change4Life and Disney are back, encouraging kids to team up to shake up with their favourite Disney characters! You can use this kit to help kids take part and get active whilst having fun at your events. Not only do the Disney inspired games offer lots of activity, but children get to be a part of their favourite Disney teams too.

Your event pack This pack provides everything you should need to get kids going at your event. Your pack includes:

• 4 different Disney team flags • 8 Disney team activities (in this booklet) • 500 10 Minute Shake Up reward stickers • 250 sign-up leaflets • 1 poster • 1 vinyl banner • 1 spinner • Bunting To set up, place your Disney team flags as far apart as you can in the space you have. You can also use the bunting, posters and banner to decorate your 10 Minute Shake Up area. Now you’re ready.

How to run an event The first thing children have to do is choose a team. The team names are inspired by favourite Disney stories: Monsters, Big Hero 6, Frozen and Toy Story to really encourage kids to get active. So gather the kids together, and get them to run to their first choice of Disney team flag. The Disney team flag with the most players beside it wins. If you don’t have enough room to do this you can use the spinner to choose the team. Then choose one of that team’s activities for the kids to enjoy. All players will do the chosen activity for 10 minutes and at the end of the session every player that took part gets a 10 Minute Shake Up sticker. Then it’s time to get together, and go again! It’s great fun and really easy to do.

Parents – sign up for a free pack Remember to hand out the leaflets and encourage families who haven’t signed up, to do so. They can do this online, or via post with the sign-up leaflets provided in this pack. When they sign up, they’ll get a free 10 Minute Shake Up pack full of exciting activities, brilliant stickers to go on a big team poster and a FREE team wristband* with their child’s chosen team design sent to them in the post.

* England residents aged 18+ only. While stocks last, not all wristbands have timers. Limited numbers per household. See website for full terms and conditions.

Scary feet, scary feet It’s night time and three of you need to pretend to be asleep at one end of the play area. The rest of you are scarers just like Sulley in Disney Pixar’s Monsters University. Sneak up on the sleeping ones and be careful not to wake them up as you creep over. If anyone hears you they can shout Monsters to wake everyone up. They’ll need to do 10 jumps before going back to sleep. Scarers will need to run back to the start. Once you reach the sleepers without them hearing – ROAR and be as scary as you can be to send everyone running around the play area once. Then swap places and start again.

Monster moves You’re just like Mike Wazowski from Disney Pixar’s Monsters University. Which monster moves can you do? Scary feet: run on the spot. Kid’s awake: stand as still as you can without making a sound. Twins in bunk beds: duck down to scare one, and reach up to scare the other. Now put all the moves together to make a great monster moves dance to complete the game.

Cool! You’re surrounded by ice and snow. Two of you are just like Elsa from Disney Frozen, with the power to freeze the others on the spot. Dance around and when you are tagged, freeze like a snowflake with your feet apart and your arms outstretched. Your friends can unfreeze you by going through your legs or under your arms.

Anna’s Frozen game Elsa has frozen everything: can you stay warm like Anna? One person is a DJ, when they start the music everyone dances. When the DJ stops the music, everyone freezes. If you don’t freeze in time, do 20 star jumps to melt the ice. Can you keep playing for 10 minutes? If you can’t play any music, try this activity instead:

Snow way! You are just like Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf when they’re running from Marshmallow the giant snowman from Disney’s story Frozen. Run as fast as you can between the markers, ducking from imaginary flying snowballs.

Buzz’s warp drive dash Navigating this great galaxy takes speed, skill and the steely nerves of a super pilot. By sprinting from one side to the other, our pilots aim to quickly reach the other side of the galaxy – but STOP – right on the landing line. Prepare for launch on the starting line. Wings deployed (arms out), pre-launch check OK. Let me hear your rocket engine and launch bay noises. When you hear We are GO for launch. GO! All pilots must race to the other side – then stop exactly on the finish line. Don’t overshoot the galaxy, you’ll be lost in space forever. To make things more interesting we’ll add obstacles, like asteroids, planets and space debris like broken satellite junk. You’ll have to weave in and out to avoid it.

Back to your toy box You’re playing in Andy’s room just like Woody and Buzz in Disney Pixar’s Toy Story. But you need to get back in your toy box before Andy sees you. You’re going to need quick feet for this fast-moving activity. Get into pairs and lay out your mats (or paper, or picnic blanket) – these are your toy boxes. Run around the play area until the organiser says Andy’s coming upstairs. Run to safety and stand in a toy box. It will get more and more difficult to find a toy box as the game goes on because the organiser will take a mat away each time. If you do not find a toy box in time you must stand as still as you can, like a toy left out in Andy’s bedroom, until the game is over.

Flying high Are you ready to fly like you’re wearing a high-tech suit? Zoom through the clouds just like Baymax from Disney Big Hero 6? Get ready to soar, following the signals as you go: Up: jump Down: crouch down Speed 1, 2, 3: walk, jog, run Loop-the-loop: spin around

Microbot moves Your movements are being controlled, just like the Microbot’s movements are controlled by Mr Kabuki in Disney’s Big Hero 6. Get into pairs, one of you is Bot A and the other is Bot B. Stand in a large circle A, B, A, B. Bot A: take four robotic-style steps forward into the centre, and back. Now everyone, join hands in the circle and take one side step to the left. Bot B: take four robotic-style steps forward into the centre, and back. Everyone, join hands in the circle and take one side step to the right. Repeat this four times, gradually getting a little bit faster but keeping your jerky, mechanical moves. To finish, join hands in a big circle and all jump forward into the middle. Remember to bend your knees and jump high, as a robot would. Then jump back again. Do this four times.

Get social Don’t forget to publicise your event. Before: S hare all the details on Facebook and Twitter to ensure a great turnout on the day. Get local community groups to do the same. After: R emind your followers to sign up to 10 Minute Shake Up online for their FREE pack.
