This course is suitable for students aged 21 or over. Applicants aged 19 or 20 will also be considered if you have experience outside of full-time education, for example through work or travel. Applicants will be assessed through application, interview and tests in English and Maths. Ideally you should also have some knowledge of a sciencebased subject or have a science based GCSE or equivalent qualification.

GCSE requirements for Access applicants: In order to progress to certain Higher Education courses, you may require GCSE English and/or GCSE Maths to fulfil your university entry requirements. Ideally you will already have GCSE Maths and English at grade A*-C. A GCSE or functional skills course will be offered as an additional option for the Access course – please note that some GCSE classes may be delivered in the evening. If you don’t have any GCSEs or equivalent qualifications then we will be able to recommend you for another course based on the results of your initial assessment at interview.

Higher Education Foundation Degrees and Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degrees What are Foundation Degrees? • Foundation Degrees were launched in 2000 as a partnership between colleges, universities and employers. They are one of the fastest growing Higher Education qualifications in the UK. • A Foundation Degree is a Level 4/5 qualification and the equivalent to the first two years of a full Honours Degree. • A Foundation Degree is a recognised qualification in its own right. • In 2001, 4,000 students were studying on Foundation Degrees. By 2014, this figure had grown to over 180,000 students. • Over half of the students on Foundation Degrees are studying on a part-time basis. • 75% of students are over 21 when they begin studying for a Foundation Degree. Westminster Kingsway College offers Foundation Degrees on a full-time, day-release, part-time day and/or evening basis, allowing you to fit your course around your

work or family commitments. • QAA Quality Mark for Westminster Kingsway College • The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has confirmed the quality and standards of provision at Westminster Kingsway College following its review in February 2015. • A team of QAA reviewers visited Westminster Kingsway College and judged that its academic standards, the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities, and the quality of information about its learning opportunities all meet UK expectations. Linda Rippe, Foundation Degree in Culinary Arts Linda moved to the UK from Spain and wanted to do something she had a passion for. After completing a Professional Chef Diploma NVQ Level 1, 2 and 3 at Westminster Kingsway College she has since gone on to do a Foundation Degree in Culinary Arts. “After completing my NVQ Levels 1, 2 and 3, I chose to do a Foundation Degree which was much more challenging but with the help of my tutors, I succeeded. I like that the course required me to work and study at the same time, as it helped my understanding and helped put into practice what

I have learnt. It also challenged me to further myself. Thanks to that, I have gained 5 years’ experience. I have realised that I enjoy working in all areas of cuisine including French fine dining, South African cuisine, 5-star hotels and Patisserie. I am currently doing a top-up degree in BSc Culinary Arts Management at West London University and would like to use this, together with my experience from Westminster Kingsway College to become a University Lecturer. ”

Advanced Learning Loan

for Advanced Learning Loanon Access to Higher Educati Diploma students

Advanced Learning Loan for Access to Higher Education Diploma students Advanced Learning Loans help people aged 19 and over undertake vocational, technical and professional qualifications at Levels 3, 4, 5 and 6. Students aged 19 and over who are starting a further education course may qualify for an Advanced Learning Loan. These loans can help to pay for your College tuition fees. These loans are not a higher education student loan. Most students aged 19 and over, studying at Level 3 and above at an approved college in England like Westminster Kingsway College, will qualify for an Advanced Learning Loan from the UK Government. It’s easy to apply, household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. Students won’t have to pay anything back until their income is over £21,000 a year. In addition, students who progress from an Access to Higher Education Diploma course to complete a Higher Education Degree can have their outstanding Advance Learning Loan for the Access course written off.

Did you know? The College can provide specialist advice on course fees and students loans. You can also find further information at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance.

If your income falls below £21,000, repayments will stop and only restart when your income increases to more than £21,000 per year again.

If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to complete a Higher Education course you will not have to pay back your Advance Learning Loan.

How do I decide if it is the right choice for me?

What are the repayment rates? The monthly repayment would depend upon your salary after completing your course. You will pay 9% of any income over £21,000 a year.
