Introducing Machine Vision The Evolution of Vision Technology

Computer Vision: research and fundamental technology from extracting meaning from images

Machine Vision: industrial / factory automation applications

Embedded Vision: thousands of applications • Consumer, automotive, medical, defense, retail, gaming, security, education, transportation, … • Embedded systems, mobile devices, PC’s and the cloud

7

Machine Vision System Components • Illumination • Optics • Camera • Digital Interface to PC (Frame Grabber) • (Industrial) PC • Image processing library • Application software Building of complete system plus software needs specialists! (System Integrator, OEM)

8

More integrated solutions

Examples of more integrated solutions for specific applications

• Smaller • Lower cost • Easier to install • Simple programming / setting of parameters • Can be used for less complex tasks • More integration -> less flexibility

9

Metrology in Electronics Manufacturing

Adimec is focusing on manufacturing of consumer electronics • Modern mobile consumer products (cell phones, tablets, laptops) are main drivers for innovation • Next generation devices are - Faster - Smaller - Lower power - Lower cost • The next slides show a simplified graphical representation of the Electronics Manufacturing chain that is heavily relying on Machine Vision Technologies

Trends in Machine Vision for Electronics Manufacturing • Increase in resolution to allow for wider FoV and higher measurement accuracy - 1Mpx in 2000, 25 Mpx in 2016, 50 Mpx in 2017 - 100+ Mpx in …? • Increase in pixel rate to allow for higher resolution, multiple acquisitions while reducing cycle time • Move from 2D to 3D inspection methods • Use of embedded vision systems instead of traditional PC / Frame Grabber combinations to reduce size and costs

16

General trends in Machine Vision • Reduction of size and costs of systems • More integrated solutions will become available - Smart cameras will become more capable - Inspection modules including illumination, multiple cameras plus embedded vision solution

• Addition of UV and IR wavelengths, hyperspectral imaging • Increase of resolution and speed

17

General trends in Machine Vision • Deep learning methods for training of MV system - Training instead of programming • Future4 ”Smart Factories” will use small, flexible Working Group SC3: Interface Smart Camera/Vision System toand networked Process Environment production cells including Machine Vision 4.1 Industry 4.0 – Challenge for Vision Standards - Higher flexibility The concept behind Industry 4.0 (I40) is to adopt the advanced in network technology for the improvement of  the production process e.g. via horizontal and vertical networking. The goal is to make production more flexible  and better controllable. Production lines need to be able to allow product variations, different product types,  or even individual products.

Figure 4.1  Change of production processes by Industry 4.0 [I40_Strategy].  Figure  4.1  illustrates  the  implications  for  the  production  process  in  general.  Instead  of  a  strict  hierarchy  of  management levels (as can be seen in the automation pyramid) the processes will turn into a network. Every  node  and  level  will  have  access  to  information  down  to  the  production  line  devices.  As  an  example  the  production  statistics  software  (part  of  MES:  Manufacturing  Execution  System)  will  access  machine  vision  devices directly to monitor quality of the process.

18

Industry 4.0 requires intelligent devices working in an autonomous, self‐organized production process. Like in

Standards in Machine Vision • Machine Vision systems consist of components of different manufacturers • Standards are a must - To be sure that components interoperate - To be able to choose from various vendors - To be sure that performance is known and consistent

• Whenever possible, existing standards are used • When necessary, new standards are developed for MV (often based on existing standards) • Machine Vision Associations world-wide cooperate on standards development

19

Machine Vision Standards Lighting / lenses

• Lighting standards - Specification and measurement of illuminators - Interface and control of illuminators (WIP) • Lens standards - Optical formats, lens mounts, specifications

20

Machine Vision Standards Sensor / Camera performance
