ELECTRIC ARC FLASH PROTECTION WHAT IS AN ARC FLASH?
TEST REFERENCE STANDARD
NEED FOR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING
Let’s start by explaining the electrical phenomenon of an arc flash. The arc flash is the resulting discharge of energy caused by an arcing fault. An arcing fault is the unintended flow of current through a medium not intended to carry the current. That just means that the electricity is flowing through something it shouldn’t be; in most cases that result in injury, the medium was the air. The air becomes like a piece of copper, conducting the electricity, only with the air, you can see the massive discharge of the electrons from the discharging element. This is the arc flash. It is lightning on a smaller yet more deadly scale.
This is the standard that the Arc Protection fabric is tested to achieve the Arc Rating ASTM F1959/ F11959M-06ae1. Standard test methods for determining Arc Thermal performance of textile materials for clothing by Electric Arc Exposure method.
NFPA 70E defines necessary steps to be taken to properly prevent serious injury in the event of an arc flash accident. Simply put, NFPA 70E calls that when a worker is within the Flash Protection Boundary (the area where discharged energy is greater than 1.2 cal/ cm2) he must be qualified and wearing thermally resistant and arc flash protective clothing. For training, arc flash videos are useful.
What causes an arc flash? Well, as noted above, the cause is an arcing fault. What causes an arcing fault? Many things. The most common causes of an arcing fault are equipment failure, human error (improper placement of tools or improper use of equipment), or the conduction of electricity due to foreign particles in the air (usually metal shavings).
WHAT IS NFPA 70E?
WHAT DOES CAL/CM² MEAN? An Electric Arc Flash is normally expressed in cal/ cm², or small calories of heat energy per square centimetre. For example, the Arcguard FEPVCMW Overall has a 12cal/cm² ATPV electrical arc flash rating. This means that 12 cal/cm² is the maximum incident energy resistance demonstrated by the FEPVCMW fabric, prior to break-open or at the onset of a second degree skin burn. A typical electrical arc flash can release energy levels from 4cal/cm² to 30cal/cm² and exposures between 30cal/cm² and 60cal/cm² are not uncommon.

Test Parameters Test Current Distance to fabric Arc gap Number of samples analysed
8kA 30cm 30cm 21 per colour
The NFPA 70E standard is a North American standard for Electrical safety requirements for employee workplaces. The standard requires employees to wear flame resistant (FR) protective clothing, wherever there is possible exposure to an electric arc flash. It requires employers to perform a Flash Hazard Analysis to determine the flash protection boundary distance. Within the standard, there are a total of 5 Hazard Risk Categories (HRC) and each category corresponds to a cal/cm² arc rating. Transpower NZ adopted the NFPA 70E standard in September 2005. They have recognised that it is difficult for employees to perform a flash hazard analysis, so they have set the minimum requirements to Hazard Risk Category 2 (HRC 2). HRC 2 requires a minimum rating of 8 cal/cm2. Products that meet HRC 2 also meet HRC 0 and HRC 1.
ARC FLASH CLOTHING SELECTION Picking the right type of arc flash protective clothing fortunately, has been made quite easy. First, consult the NFPA 70E compliance guide located in this catalogue to determine to which category of risk a particular activity belongs and the ATPV (arc thermal performance value) rating needed. Second, consult the Hi visibility standard AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 (or TTMC-W standard if working on or near a road or highway) to determine what type of clothing you will need based on the environment you will be working in. Once you have done all this, you are ready to contact the Arcguard team.
One thing to remember when picking the protective work wear is to try and ensure that no skin is exposed. Ensure that the pant legs (if not connected to boots) completely go down to the boot. Also ensure that the sleeves of the protective work wear go down to the hand, leaving none of the arm exposed. High-voltage gloves are also necessary. And lastly, remember that the head is the most vulnerable part of the body. Don’t forget to complete the arc flash protective clothing with suitable head gear of the same ATPV rating as the rest of the work-wear.

INHERATEX FABRIC What The consequence of an arc flash can be fatal, with workers suffering serious injuries and businesses suffering loss. Arcguard is designed to protect you from these risks. Many industrial workers are at risk of being in a Flash Fire or Flashover situation, some workers are unaware this risk exists. In response, the Arcguard fabric was produced for revolutionary flashover protection incorporating the ability to dischargestatic build-up safely.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ARCGUARD INHERATEX FABRIC A Inheratex is a synthetic copolymer. Arcguard Inheratex offers an uncompromising superior protection from Flash fires, Flame, and static discharge. The fabric is also soft, strong, resilient, and dimensionally stable, made from fibres that can be easily dyed, show good press and shape retention, and are quick to dry. Being quick to dry means there is less risk of an heat being transported to the body by moisture. Inheretex fibres have outstanding resistance to chemicals and solvents, are not attacked by moths or mildew, and are non-allergenic. The Inheretex fabrics have the ability to combine flame retardance, arc protection, and static discharge with a relatively low density, meaning protective gear is not uncomfortably heavy. The Inheretex fabrics also offer Inherent natural bacteriostatic, bactericidal and antifungal activity for the lifetime of the garment. Luxurious to handle, good absorption, quick drying with excellent strength:

FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF THE ARCGUARD INHERATEX The Arcguard Inheratex inherent flame retardant properties will not deteriorate or diminish; they are literally a structural part of the fibre. As well as eliminating the need for costly re-treatment and unpleasant odours, this also gives Arcguard the edge in practical comfort. •
There is no loss in performance, even after repeated laundering (including industrial), dry or spot-cleaning.
•
Because Inheratex fabrics are inherent and no chemical treatments are used for the protection they offer, they are more environmentally friendly than garments using Natural fibres, which require chemical treatments to be able to offer a similar protection.
•
Breathable fabric – the Inheretex blend provides uncompromised breathability.
•
Good colour fastness for longer life – these fibres have a similar colour retention to a Polycotton garment which is a lot higher than a natural fibre can offer. This means the company image is retained for longer.
INHERATEX MOISTURE MANAGEMENT Moisture is a means of transport for heat which in effect means that if your garment has damp spots or moisture spots you could still be at risk if exposed to a flashover. Arcguard Inheratex fibres are blended with natural fibres, giving these garments fantastic inherent quick drying properties. This significantly reduces the risk for the wearer of being seriously harmed by a flash fire.
STATIC DISCHARGE SYSTEM Carbon antistatic thread is woven into the fabric to provide a garment protecting against the build-up of static electricity. This thread is woven into a grid pattern, barely visible to the naked eye, and consists of 2% of the fabric makeup. The antistatic properties of the Arcguard garments comply to EN149:2008, internationally recommended for all petroleum industries.
MAINTAINING FR CLOTHING To retain the clothing’s original FR characteristics, it should be cleaned as specified by the manufacturer. FR clothing loses its effectiveness if the fabric is soiled with dirt and oily residues. Cleaning helps to return the clothing to its original condition but must be done as recommended by the manufacturer. The build-up of detergent and mineral residues in and on the fabric can compromise the fabric’s effectiveness. One of the most common ways to destroy the special properties of treated FR clothing is to use bleach during laundering. Any tears or other damage must be repaired promptly so that the clothing maintains its protective qualities. FR fabric patches and FR thread must be used as repair materials. Once again, the manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed when clothing is repaired.
HOW ARCGUARD® INHERATEX GARMENTS WORK Fire requires three elements; heat, fuel and oxygen. Remove any one of these factors and the fire is effectively extinguished. When a flame comes into contact with Arcguard Inheratex blends, tiny amounts of inert, nonburning gasses push the oxygen away from the surface to stop the burning process. As soon as the flaming stops or once the arc flashover has ended, gas production from the Inheratex fibres stops and a charred barrier remains – no melting, no dripping and no material sticking to the skin. The charring action and protection of the fabric gives the wearer valuable time to react appropriately, while being fully protected.

NATURAL FIBRES FABRIC EVERY DAY, WORKERS IN THE ELECTRICAL MAINTENANCE, UTILITIES, OIL, GAS, PETROCHEMICAL AND STEEL INDUSTRIES WORK IN ENVIRONMENTS THAT MAY EXPOSE THEM TO HAZARDS THAT COULD CAUSE SEVERE OR FATAL BURN INJURIES. In the event of a momentary electric arc, flash fire or molten metal splash exposure, non-flame resistant work clothes can ignite and will continue to burn even after the source of ignition has been removed. Untreated natural fabrics will continue to burn until the fabric is totally consumed, while non-flame resistant synthetic fabrics will burn with melting and dripping, causing severe contact burns to the skin. Government reports note that the majority of severe and fatal burn injuries are due to the individual’s clothing igniting and continuing to burn, not by the exposure itself. The use of the Arcguard flame resistant clothing will provide thermal protection at the exposure area. The level of protection typically rests in the fabric weight and composition. After the source of the ignition is removed, flame resistant garments will selfextinguish, limiting the body burn percentage. Flame resistance is the characteristic of a fabric that causes it to self-extinguish when the source of ignition is removed. The most commonly used test method is ASTM D6413* Standard Test Method for Flame Resistance of Textiles (Vertical Test). The vertical flame test is a test method with no pass/ fail requirements. Industry established standards range from 4” to 6” (100mm to 150mm) maximum char lengths. It is very important for flame resistant fabrics to self-extinguish.
40
Argyle | Hi Risk Protection Guide
Fabrics used by Arcguard for the Natural Fibres Range self-extinguish after the source of ignition is removed. This dramatically reduces body burn percentage and increases the chance for survival. However, char length measurements by themselves have no correlation to the protection afforded by a flame resistant fabric. True protection to thermal events is better measured by testing the thermal resistance of fabrics against exposures to simulated hazards, such as the flash fire manikin test or the arc thermal performance test – both rigorous tests have been performed on each of the Arcguard styles. The Arcguard natural fibres overalls are manufactured from a 88/11/1 composition - 88% cotton, 11% nylon and 1% carbon antistatic thread. The fire retardant cotton fibres are focused toward the skin to optimise comfort. The nylon composition is weaved into the fabric to provide enhanced durability, and this is focused toward the face of the fabric. The carbon antistatic thread is woven into the fabric to protect against static electricity. This thread is visible to the naked eye and complies to EN1149:2008, internationally recommended for all petroleum industries. Natural fibre blended fabric offers higher abrasion resistance then pure cotton giving increased durability
Argyle understands that evaluating flame resistant fabric options and launching a protective clothing program can be complicated. As an industry leader in innovation, we’re committed to putting a half century of experience to work for you – by providing the facts you need to make an informed decision. FLAMEGUARD FABRIC IN ANY WORK ENVIRONMENT THAT EXPOSES INDIVIDUALS TO THE RISK OF FLASH FIRES OR EXPLOSIONS, SOMETHING THAT COULD POTENTIALLY PREVENT A MORE SERIOUS BURN INJURY OR HELP TO SAVE A LIFE IS NECESSARY. WHEN SECONDS SEPARATE DISASTER FROM SAFETY, FLAME RESISTANT PROTECTIVE CLOTHING JUST MIGHT BE THE DIFFERENCE THAT CAN SAVE A LIFE. We know that the wide range of flame resistant fabrics can be confusing to the end user confronted with so many different fabrics to choose from, all with their own advantages and disadvantages. Argyle Distributors Ltd works closely with fibre producers and textile mills in the development and evaluation of new flame resistant fabrics. Members of the Argyle staff have the knowledge and experience to answer your questions about all types of flame resistant protective uniforms. Fire retardant (FR) refers to a
material’s ability to self-extinguish once an ignition source is removed. Everyone working in industrial environments that have ignition hazards should wear fire retardant clothing. Even if you haven’t had an accident in years, the chances of someone getting seriously burned or worse are still very real. OSH often cites employers who do not provide the proper fire retardant clothing to their employees.
ONE: HELP PREVENT INJURY AND DEATH
THREE: COMPLY WITH REGULATIONS
Recent government reports have noted that the number one cause of severe and fatal burn injuries on the job is an individual’s clothing igniting and continuing to burn - not the source of ignition itself.
No matter where your business operates, NZ Department of Labour require employers to provide adequate protection from dangerous hazards in the workplace, especially with regard to burn injuries. In fact, companies are often cited and fined by OSH for not providing fire retardant clothing to their employees under ‘Occupational Safety and Health Standards: Personal Protective Equipment’. Future changes to the requirements are expected to be even more stringent.
The use of flame resistant clothing helps provide thermal protection at the area of exposure. The level of protection resides in the weight and composition of the flame resistant fabric. Once the source of ignition is removed, fire retardant garments will self-extinguish, allowing precious escape time and limiting the percentage of the body that is burned. Even though a person caught in a flash fire or arc flash will most likely still have some injuries, fire retardant clothing can greatly reduce their severity. And in many cases, it can make the difference between life and death.
TWO: BECAUSE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN
“
We have purchased many of this style of overall as it was compliant with site regulations at many of our client’s sites - these include scrap metal dealers and engineers where the harshness of metal cutting/welding means the safety of the employee is paramount. We pick up and launder these garments up to 3 times a week. During this time there are general repairs from employees use, but next to no wear and tear on the reflective tape and cotton fabric due to our washing process. These overalls have had a harsh life and have stood up to the rigours of harsh use by clients and also our commercial washing. These overalls still have plenty of life in them and I would not hesitate to recommend these garments to anyone looking for a compliant hard wearing overall.
TOP 3 REASONS
WHY YOU NEED TO INVEST IN FIRE RETARDANT GARMENTS
It’s cliché, but it’s true. Even when an employee is following the proper safety regulations and the risk is low, accidents can still occur. Fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) are the last line of defence in protecting workers against the unexpected flash fire accidents. Remember, it’s not a question of if an accident will occur. It’s a question of when.
There are also many voluntary consensus standards that address the urgency for fire retardant clothing in certain environments and industries. The American Society for Testing of Materials (ASTM) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®) publish their own guidelines with regard to fire retardant clothing. Not only can complying with these standards satisfy legal requirements and reduce liabilities, it has a tremendous impact on the perception of your company and overall employee morale. When you make a commitment to safety, everyone benefits.
