Dear Parents and Scholars, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you, as part of our educational family to another wonderful school year. Your child is entering a specially prepared environment that is warm, secure, and challenging; a place in which to grow socially, physically, and intellectually. Our focus is always providing each scholar with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience. Ivy Prep Academy staff is outstanding, and as a “family” unit, parents and teachers will work together to provide a wonderful education for our scholars. As we begin this year, please remember that this is your school and we welcome your involvement. Since we recognize that parents are their children’s first and most important teachers, we need your cooperation and involvement to provide your child with the best education possible. Take time to review and talk with your scholar about their school experiences. Your interest and concern in their school progress will motivate them to do their best. Maintain contact with your child’s teachers and related service staff members to establish a successful home/school connection. I am committed to working in collaboration with you to continue to implement our shared vision. This handbook is one way to bring the parents, teachers, and scholars of Ivy Prep together. Only together can we accomplish a program of well-rounded education for all of our scholars. In this handbook you can find the answers to most of your questions. The rules of the school apply to all scholars. Please contact a member of the administrative team for additional information or clarification of anything contained in this handbook. At Ivy Prep Academy, we are very proud of our teachers and know that they are the key to our scholars’ success. As a Title I school, we must meet federal rules related to teacher qualifications as defined in No Child Left Behind. These rules allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:  Whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,  Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and  What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration. You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications. Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. Our Mission Within a structured and supportive environment, Ivy Prep develops middle and high school girls into thoroughly equipped scholars who are prepared to enter and succeed in the colleges and universities of their choice. Our public charter school focuses on building the scholarly habits, attitudes, and skills scholars need to succeed in college, in their communities, and in life. Our seamless middle school to college model provides Ivy Prep scholars with a rigorous curriculum, engaging teachers, and a safe, supportive and nurturing learning environment that develops the academic, behavioral and personal skills of all scholars.

Family and Scholar Handbook 2014-2015 The successful operation of a school requires the cooperation of many people. By enrolling at Ivy Prep Academy, we expect that our scholars and their families will abide by our philosophy and policies. The professional staff and Board have established rules and guidelines for maintaining high standards for scholar conduct which in turn leads to a safe, orderly and inviting school in which to teach and learn. The Code applies to all scholars. The school will also establish behavioral guidelines to maintain an environment that is conducive to effective instruction without stifling expression and appropriate social interaction. Any serious violations of school policy and/or any illegal or immoral behavior could result in serious disciplinary action.

ABSENTEEISM/ATTENDANCE Forming responsible habits regarding attendance and promptness is important. Parents are expected to support the goal of punctuality by having their children arrive on time, remain in school for a full day, and schedule appointments after school hours if possible. Excessive late check-ins or early check-outs will result in a conference with the Principal and may result in disciplinary consequences. While the high school instructional model has an on-line delivery, attendance to school is mandatory. Should the scholar be absent for any reason, she is still able to complete assignments from wherever she is located. Tests, however, must be taken while at school. When a scholar is absent, parents are asked to inform the school by 10:00 a.m. Upon her return to school and no later than the third day, a parental written note of explanation must be presented in order for the absence to be excused. All written notes must have a parent signature. Written notes may be faxed, handwritten, or e-mailed with a scanned signature. The following is a list of reasons for an excused absence: 1. Illness of child – a physician's note may be requested. 2. Scheduled appointments to a physical or mental healthcare provider, including, but not limited to, a physician, dentist, orthodontist, psychologist. 3. Contagious disease within the home of a scholar. 4. Death in the family or of a close friend. 5. Legal business. 6. Observance of a religious holiday. 7. Remedial health treatment. 8. Absence, pre-approved by the school, to participate in other educational experiences. 9. Emergency situations as determined by the school. 10. Suspension from school. Please note that vacations and other outside activities scheduled during the school year will not be approved as an excused absence. Vacations and other activities should be scheduled outside of the academic calendar. The following are mandatory school attendance requirements for Ivy Prep Academy: 1. Following the 5th day of an unexcused absence by a scholar, the school shall immediately notify the

parent(s)/guardian(s). 2. Following the 10th day of an unexcused absence by a scholar, the scholar's parent(s)/guardian(s) shall be notified by certified mail to appear at the school within ten days of notification for a conference and counseling. 3. At the 15th day of an excused or unexcused absence a meeting will be scheduled with the Principal, and the scholar will be asked to withdraw. Extenuating circumstances which would result in an extended absence require prior approval of the Principal and Executive Director. A scholar who has an unapproved extended absence will be considered truant and possibly withdrawn from school.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Ivy Preparatory regards academic integrity as key to our mission and essential in the virtual environment. Scholars in grades 9 and above are required to sign an Honor Code at the beginning of the school year. It is expected that all scholars will adhere to the Honor Code throughout the year and all schoolwork submitted in order to meet course or class requirements represents the original work of the student. In addition, scholars are expected to be proactive in ensuring they are adhering to the principles of academic integrity by:  Completing, and reviewing as needed, the Academic Integrity section of their Orientation  Agreeing to, and referring to as needed, the Ivy Prep/Connections Honor Code  Using, in accordance with their school policy, tools provided in Connexus® to ‘self- check’ for academic integrity (e.g. plagiarism-checking software). The following principles are critical to maintaining academic integrity:  Scholars must not submit work of any kind that is not their own work.  Scholars must not plagiarize in any work (written, multimedia, oral, creative, etc.).  Scholars must not post assessments, assignments, answers to assessments or assignments, or any other curricular materials provided on any media that can be seen by other scholars or other third parties.  Scholars must not give or receive unauthorized assistance on assessments from other scholars, faculty, family members, or any other individual.  Scholars must not utilize any unauthorized aid while taking an assessment.  Scholars must not present any forged document or signature to the school.  Scholars must notify administration or teacher of any violations to the academic integrity policy of which they become aware. Failure to adhere to the Academic Integrity Policy will result in the following disciplinary actions:  Scholars will be required to appear before administration on each occurrence.  Parents will be contacted on each occurrence.  Violations to the Academic Integrity Policy will be added to the scholar’s permanent discipline record.  Scholars who violate the Academic Integrity Policy twice will be required to appear before a hearing committee which could result in suspension or expulsion.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES If a scholar at Ivy Prep Academy fails a major subject in any grading period, the school administration has the right to evaluate and require the scholar to limit participation in school-sponsored extra-curricular activities.

AGENDA PROCEDURES When a scholar receives a homework assignment or an important due-date, she should automatically pull out her agenda and record the assignment. This should become a habit early on. At the end of the day, scholars should already have all of their homework recorded and not have to fill in missing assignments. Scholars are required to utilize their agenda as their hall pass. Scholars are required to complete each section of the Hallway Passport and have the teacher initial each time that they leave the classroom. If a scholar looses their agenda, they will be required to pay $5.00 to receive a replacement agenda.

ALCOHOL Use or possession of alcohol at Ivy Prep Academy is absolutely forbidden. Scholars may not use, possess or be under the influence of alcohol in school or on school grounds, when she comes to school, or when she attends any schoolsponsored activities. If a scholar is found violating this regulation she will be suspended immediately and the scholar will

be required to appear in a hearing.

ASSAULT An assault is when a scholar intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causes physical injury to another. Scholars who violate this will be immediately suspended, and a hearing will be conducted. Referral to Police Agency is required for scholars upon a showing of intentionality or malice for assault against a staff member. Recommendation for expulsion may be considered.

ASSESSMENTS AND FINAL EXAMS Connections Assessments and Exams: All tests for all courses must be taken at school and supervised by their teacher. Scholars will have 1½ hours to complete their tests. Final Exams for all courses will be taken at school and supervised at the end of each semester according to the exam schedule which will be provided. Scholars will have 2 hours to complete final exams. Scholars with a 504 plan or IEP will have extended time in accordance with any accommodations approved in said documents. Tests and exams that exceed the allotted time frame will be invalidated. Tests that are taken without teacher supervision will also be invalidated. End of Course Tests: Scholars are required to take End-of-Course tests in the following courses: 9th grade Literature, American Literature, Coordinate Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Biology, Physical Science, US History and Economics. End-of-Course tests are 20% of the final grade. Georgia High School Writing Test: Scholars are required to pass the Georgia High School Writing Test as part of their graduation requirements. The GHSWT is administered during their junior year. Scholars who fail the GHSWT will have several attempts to retake the test successfully. Advanced Placement Exams: Scholars who take AP courses are required to take the corresponding AP exam in order to earn the extra quality point for her grade point average. There is a cost associated with AP exams. Scholars may contact administration if financial hardship prevents them from paying for their AP exam(s). Scholars who do not take their AP exam will have to reimburse Ivy Prep any registration fees that were paid on their behalf, will incur an unused exam fee assessed by the College Board, and will lose their extra quality point applied to her GPA.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS Celebrating your daughter’s birthday in school is always welcome, but to ensure that instructional time is not lost, the following procedures should be upheld. -Approved treats are welcome to celebrate her birthday; however, the parent must contact her classroom teacher to coordinate those efforts. Parents must provide enough treats to be shared with entire class. -Scholars are not allowed to have balloons in the classroom, as this can be a distraction to the learning environment. -Times and dates for the celebrations are left up to the discretion of the classroom teacher and school administrators.

BULLYING In accordance with O.C.G.A. § 20-2-751.4, bullying means an act which occurs on school property, on school vehicles, at designated school bus stops, or at school related functions or activities, or by use of data or software that is accessed through a computer, computer system, computer network, or other electronic technology of a local school system, that is: 1) Any willful attempt or threat to inflict injury on another person, when accompanied by an apparent present ability to do so; 2) Any intentional display of force such as would give the victim reason to fear or expect immediate bodily harm; or 3) Any intentional written, verbal, or physical act, which a reasonable person would perceive as being intended to threaten, harass, or intimidate, that: i. Causes another person substantial physical harm within the meaning of O.C.G.A. § 16-5-23.1 or visible bodily harm as defined in O.C.G.A. § 16-5-23.1; ii. Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s education; iii. Is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening education environment; or iv. Has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school.

A scholar is being bullied when she is exposed repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more scholars. A negative action occurs when a person knowingly inflicts, or attempts to inflict, physical or emotional injury or discomfort upon another person. Additionally, bullying includes any of the above behaviors conducted through electronic means (cyber bullying) such as texting, phone calls, or the inappropriate used of internet-based media. Scholars who engage in bullying behavior will be subject to severe punishment that may include In-school isolation, out of school suspension or a disciplinary hearing. Acts of bullying will be handled through parent contact and the Dean of Scholars. The scholar may be required to appear in a hearing.

CHANGING CLASS A scholar may not leave a classroom during a period without an official pass from the teacher present. Moving from one location to another should be done quietly, so as not to disturb the classes in session. When changing classes, scholars should be in the classroom and ready to begin class when the second bell rings.

COMMUNICATION DEVICES Communication devices such as, but not limited to, cellular phones, electronic beepers and/or electronic signaling devices, may not be used in the school building during the official school day for the sake of communicating with others. Juniors and Seniors, however, may utilize their communication devices to listen to music while doing schoolwork, if desired. Their communication devices should be put away while transitioning between classes, while in the front office, or at the request of any teacher or administrator. Freshman and Sophomores are not permitted to utilize their communication devices at any point during the school day. If their communication device is seen or heard, it will be taken. Scholars violating this policy will have the item confiscated and turned over to an administrator. Communication devices may only be picked up on Fridays by a parent.

CONNEXUS® GRADE BOOK The Grade Book allows all parents, scholars, and the Success Coach to view grades from both electronic assessments (immediate and automatic postings) and written work (posted by teachers after work is evaluated). The Connexus® Grade Book is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and always reflects the student’s current status in each course in which she is enrolled (overall grade, grade in each course, grades on assessments within each course, and the number and percentage of lessons the student has completed). Parents should check their scholar’s grade book frequently to remain informed of her academic progress.

CYBER-BULLYING Neither the school's network, nor the broader Internet (whether accessed on campus or off campus, either during or after school hours), may be used for the purpose of harassment. All forms of harassment in cyberspace, often called cyberbullying, are unacceptable. Cyber-bullying includes, but is not limited to the following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, intimidating, threatening, or terrorizing another person by sending or posting inappropriate and hurtful e-mail messages, instant messages (including text messages), or Web site postings (including blogs). Often the author (sender or poster) of the inappropriate material is disguised (logged on) as someone else. Scholars who feel that they have been the victims of such misuses of technology should not erase the offending material from the system. They should print a copy of the material and immediately report the incident to the assistant principal. All reports of harassment in cyberspace will be investigated fully. Sanctions may include, but are not limited to, the loss of computer privileges, demerits, suspension, or hearing.

DEFAMATORY OR DEMEANING ACTIONS, ETHNIC INTIMIDATION 1. Actions or remarks, spoken or written, by scholars that defame or demean the dignity or self esteem of individuals or groups on the basis of their grade, status, race, color, creed, sex, national origin, marital status, physical and mental disability, physical appearance, political or religious beliefs, family, sexual orientation, social or cultural background. 2. Cellular phones or other devices capable of transmitting an audio signal or electronic image may not be used on school premises to take pictures of persons or record their conversations without prior approval from school administration. Sanctions may include, but are not limited to, demerits, suspension, or a hearing leading to possible expulsion.

DESK/WORK AREA & CLEANLINESS Teachers expect scholars to keep their work areas clean and organized. Work areas and desks should be free of trash and any non-schoolwork related items. Furniture in the classroom and team room should be cared for properly and remain free of any stains, markings, or tears. Before each class leaves a classroom, teachers will have scholars take time to

ensure the area around them is neat and organized. In this way, the classroom floors will remain neat and clean.

DISCIPLINARY SYSTEM (Demerits, Referrals, Suspension, Expulsion) Level 1 Environment – Occurs in the classroom but only impacts the student. Unacceptable behaviors include:  Talking, chewing gum, disrespect, and getting up at inappropriate times  Tardy to class and not having all required materials in classroom  Not SLANTing and not giving 100%.  In the hallway without a pass or permission  Dress-code violation (will result in parent contact to bring appropriate clothing to the school) These behaviors can be handled at the discretion of the classroom teacher. The consequences can include parent contact, 1 demerit. Level 2 Behaviors – Occurs in the classroom and interferes with other scholars ability to learn: Unacceptable behaviors include:  Failure to follow directions or request of staff members  Engaging in horseplay  Disturbing other scholars  Cheating, copying and/or plagiarism  Showing disrespect  Defiance  Negative comments and/or actions These behaviors and consequences will be given and handled by the classroom teacher or referred to the Assistant Principal. Scholars can be given 3 demerits for Level 2 behaviors. Level 3 Behaviors – Occurs outside or inside the classroom and has a negative affect on the environment Unacceptable Behaviors include:  Disruptive behavior in the café  Disruptive behavior in the hallway  Disruptive behavior at an after school activity or event  Intimidation and mistreatment of classmates  Skipping class (reporting to class excessively late without a pass, abusing time to use the restroom, etc)  Profanity  Use of phone or electronic device during school (Cell phone policy still applies). The teacher and Assistant Principal will handle these behaviors and scholars will be given 5 demerits. Level 4 Behaviors – Occurs outside or inside the classroom and are intended to cause physical or mental harm to another. These behaviors jeopardize the school environment and will not be tolerated:  Fighting  Assault  Overt bullying or harassment of any kind  Gross disrespect towards staff  Open defiance  Intentional destruction of property  Possession of weapons or illegal substances  Arson  Theft These behaviors are considered severe, and can result in immediate suspension or expulsion. The Assistant Principal and Principal will handle these behaviors and consequences and the scholar will receive 10 demerits. The Accumulation of Demerits The accumulation of demerits will result in additional consequences. The consequences are as follows: 10 Demerits 1 Day OSS (Out of School Suspension) 20 Demerits 2 Days OSS (Out of School Suspension) 30 Demerits Considered for Dismissal/Withdrawal

In addition to the consequences listed above, scholars who accumulate demerits will also lose school-wide privileges such as field trips, spirit wear days, and other special events. Monitoring the accumulation of demerits allows us to isolate inappropriate behaviors, and prevents us from giving collective consequences such as the loss of privileges to those who are working hard everyday and following the rules. Those who maintain a low level of demerits will be acknowledged by receiving additional privileges such as field trips, spirit wear days, and Culture Club Luncheons etc.

DRESS CODE A higher standard of dress encourages greater respect for individuals, scholars and others, and results in a higher standard of behavior. Our dress code guidelines indicate appropriate school dress during normal school days. Ivy Prep reserves the right to interpret these guidelines and/or make changes during the school year. Scholars are expected to follow these guidelines. Daily, teachers will have scholars recite the Pledge of Allegiance, The Ivy Creed, offer a Moment of Silence, followed by a Uniform Check. Scholars who are in violation will have their names reported to the Dean of Scholars office for parent notification. Parents are required to pick-up their daughter from school if she is not abiding by the dress code guidelines, or bring her the appropriate uniform items. - To maintain uniformity, Ivy Prep has designated Buckhead Uniforms as the exclusive provider of our school uniform. - The Ivy Prep logo is copyrighted and cannot be used on non-approved clothing or items without permission from the school. - Uniforms should be clean and neat at all times. - During the winter, scholars may wear solid white or green sweaters, without patterns or logos of any kind. - Scholars should be aware that they will not be allowed to wear jackets inside and should plan for cool weather accordingly. - Scholars are not allowed to wear hats, caps, bandanas, sunglasses, hoods, or clothing tied around the waist or neck, unless it is for religious, cultural, or disability reasons. - Hair must be neat and clean with no “unnatural” colors i.e. fluorescent, pink, bright green, etc. - Earrings should be the size of a quarter or smaller or no longer than 1 inch. Jewelry should be tasteful and modest. - No extreme or excessive make-up. - Every Monday is Professional Day scholars are required to be in complete uniform. Professional High School attire includes the blazer, tie, charcoal skirt, white oxford shirt, white knee-high socks, and Mary Janes or Loafers. Please refer to the Uniform Picture Gallery. On Professional Days, the white oxford shirt must be tucked inside of the skirt. - Scholars are required to wear solid green or solid white socks. - Uniforms are to be worn when scholars are on campus. Clothing cannot be changed prior to going home. Freedom Friday Attire - On Fridays, high school scholars are allowed to wear jeans with their own appropriate shirt. Jeans may not have frayed edges or holes and must fit modestly. - Unacceptable Friday attire includes: tank tops, sleeveless/see through/lace blouses, sweatpants, skirts, shorts, capris, sandals, flip flops, shoes with back straps, etc. - Only scholars that have demonstrated that they can uphold the Ivy Prep culture will be allowed to participate in Spirit Wear Days. Teachers and scholars will receive notification from the Dean of Scholars informing them of the scholars that are not allowed to participate. - In order to participate in Freedom Fridays, scholars will be required to pay $1 on Friday mornings or may pay $15 to participate for the entire semester. Money will not be refunded in the event scholar is absent or loses the privilege due to misconduct. - Scholars who are not participating in Freedom Fridays are required to be in their standard IPA uniform.

DRIVING TO SCHOOL Juniors and Seniors are permitted to drive to school if they have earned the appropriate driver’s license. Approval must be granted by school administration PRIOR to driving to school. Scholars must complete the necessary paperwork, provide a copy of her driver’s license, and submit a $25 fee in order to receive her parking decal. Scholars must comply with the following guidelines in order to maintain their driving privileges.  Ivy Prep is not an “open campus”. Once the scholar arrives on campus, she may not leave campus for any reason until dismissal or check out.

After 8:15, a scholar is considered tardy to school and must check herself in at the front office. If the scholar accumulates more than 3 unexcused tardies, her driving privilege will be suspended for one week. If the scholar accumulates an additional 3 unexcused tardies, her driving privilege will be suspended for the remainder of the semester. No refunds on the parking fee will be issued. A scholar may not check herself out of school without documentation from her parent/guardian A scholar may not transport another scholar to or from school without written consent from the parent/guardian of both scholars Ivy Prep is not responsible for the theft or damage to the vehicle or it contents.

DRUGS Use, possession, or distribution of drugs, look-alike substances and/or drug paraphernalia at Ivy Prep is absolutely forbidden. Any involvement with drugs is an offense that could result in expulsion. If a scholar uses drugs, is in possession of drugs, or is found under the influence of drugs during school time, on the school property, on a school bus, or at activities sponsored by the school, the scholar will be suspended immediately and will be required to appear before the Review Board. Police will also be contacted. The selling or dispensing of drugs to other scholars is a very serious offense, which will result in immediate expulsion and notification of the police.

EARLY PICK-UP In the event it is necessary to pick-up your scholar(s) early from school, please visit the school office to sign your child out. Scholars should be signed-out early only as necessary, as this is disruptive to the academic process. No scholar will be permitted to leave school within ½ hour of school dismissal unless it is an emergency.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSING PROCEDURES Ivy Prep follows emergency closing procedures of the neighboring school district (Gwinnett County Public Schools). Radio and television stations will advise all citizens of school closings, reopening and emergency procedures. Please pay attention to WSB Channel 2 Storm Watch and Ivy Preparatory Academy’s website for information about Ivy Prep during inclement or severe weather.

ENTERING THE BUILDING

- At 7:30 a.m., school doors open, and Ivy Prep Academy assumes responsibility for all scholars. Scholars are not allowed to enter the building prior to 7:30 a.m. - Scholars must enter through the cafeteria/multipurpose doors. - When entering the building at any time, scholars must have their uniforms on correctly. - Scholars should enter the building silently and in a line when coming from their vehicles. - Scholars should always enter classrooms silently, take a seat and begin their Do-Now.

FIELDTRIPS All fieldtrips planned by the school are specific educational purposes. Scholars that wish to attend the fieldtrips must assume the responsibility for any necessary participation fee, return a signed Fieldtrip Permission Form, and uphold the Ivy Prep expectations while on any fieldtrip. Parent chaperones are welcomed, and are required to contact the field trip leader to coordinate participation/roles. Scholars that have not consistently upheld the Ivy Prep values may forfeit their opportunity to attend school fieldtrips, and the Dean of Scholars will notify families of this. If a scholar has submitted fees for a fieldtrip and are not allowed to attend due to behavior concerns, the family will not be refunded the funds submitted.

FIGHTING Fighting in school will result in immediate removal from the building of both parties. During this time the administration will attempt to ascertain who was at fault. If the fault can be determined, further action could result. In addition, depending on the severity of the fight, a longer suspension period and police contact may result. In many situations, a scholar has the opportunity to walk away and report an incident involving physical contact. However, if a scholar retaliates to the initial physical contact, he or she could be held culpable for fighting. There is no such thing as an innocent spectator to a fight. A scholar should leave the area to get help. Standing around as a spectator only encourages fighting. A scholar will be subject to disciplinary action if the scholar is an observer or in any way encourages a fight.

FOOD AND DRINK Scholars are permitted to have healthy snacks and beverages while in class. Teachers and administrators reserve the

right to restrict food and beverage consumption when deemed necessary. Scholars who fail to adhere to this policy will lose the privilege of snacking while in class. Gum chewing is never permitted during school hours.

FORGERY A. Creating a false document to be used for school purposes (i.e. school passes, parental notes). B. The willful act of imitating or counterfeiting the signature of parents/legal guardian or custodian, teachers, or administrators, for the purpose of deceiving an Ivy Prep employee. A scholar who violates this policy will receive a consequence and the teacher will inform the parent or guardian. Subsequent incidents of forgery in any class will result in a referral to an administrator where more serious disciplinary action may be taken.

GAMBLING Gambling of any kind is prohibited at the school. Money and paraphernalia will be confiscated when the activity is discovered.

GRADING SYSTEM Report Cards will be issued four times per year. Letter grades are based on the following: RANGE LETTER EQUIVALENT 90-100 A 80-89 B 74-79 C 70-73 D 0- 69 F

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS In order to earn a high school diploma from Ivy Preparatory Academy, scholars must:  Earn 24 credits which are aligned with the state’s graduation requirements 4 credits in Language Arts 4 credits in Mathematics 4 credits in Science 4 credits in Social Studies 3 credits in World Language (all credits must be in the same language) 1 credit in Health/PE 4 credits in Electives  Pass the Georgia High School Writing Test, which is administered in the 11th grade.  Complete 100 community service hours

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING SERVICE A comprehensive guidance program is provided at Ivy Preparatory Academy. It is designed to address needs of all scholars by helping them to develop positive self-concepts, healthy social skills and interpersonal relationships, and educational success. Scholars may make appointments with their teachers.

HOW SCHOLARS ASK QUESTIONS -

Scholars should raise their hand and wait to be recognized. Scholars should track the person they are addressing. Scholars should speak loudly and clearly. Scholars should answer questions by speaking in complete sentences using a respectful tone.

INJURY If an accident occurs during the school day the scholar will report first to the teacher on duty. The teacher will then permit the scholar to go to the front office. All accidents that result in injuries – even minor injuries – must be reported.

LATE FOR SCHOOL / EARLY DISMISSAL Being prompt to school and staying in school for a full school day goes hand-in-hand with a responsible attendance record. Every effort should be made to assure that the scholar arrives at school on time and stays in school until dismissal (8:00 – 4:00pm). If a scholar is late to school or has an early dismissal, she must present a note stating the

reason for lateness or early dismissal. Scholars and parents must recognize that a parental note of explanation does not automatically excuse the lateness or early dismissal. Reasons such as car trouble, personal business, heavy traffic, needed at home, etc. while understandable, are not acceptable excuses, and will be listed as unexcused. Reasons such as personal illness, medical or other physical or mental healthcare appointments and appearances in court will be considered as excused lateness when verified by a note from home.

LEAVING SCHOOL Ivy Prep is a closed campus. Scholars are not permitted to leave campus during school without parent permission and administrative approval. The “campus” refers to the school buildings, and outside areas utilized regularly during recess and physical education. This closed-campus policy is also in effect during half-days and other abbreviated school days. Scholars arriving by van or other means of transportation are to proceed directly into the school. Scholars are not permitted to loiter in non-school areas (including the parking lot) either before or after school. Scholars who leave campus without parental and administrative permission, or who are in unauthorized areas will be referred to administration and will result in suspension.

LOITERING Loitering is a scholar's unauthorized presence in an area. A scholar who violates this policy will receive a demerit.

LOST AND FOUND We urge scholars to label all articles of clothing, books and shirts as well as items that scholars may own such as calculators and musical instruments. Scholars are encouraged not to bring large sums of money or items of great value to school. School officials cannot be responsible for the loss of any item. Weekly, unclaimed items in the lost and found will be donated to the Goodwill or other charitable organizations. It is the scholars’ responsibility to check all lost & found areas for missing items.

MEAL CHARGES Meals are required to be paid for in advance by check, cash or electronic transfer, and balances may be maintained in a scholar’s account to minimize the possibility that the scholar may be without meal money on any given day. Scholars will not be allowed to charge meals in excess of $6.00. For any student who is withdrawn and owing a balance, all final records will be withheld until balance is paid in full. For any student who is withdrawn, a written request for a refund of any money remaining in their meal account must be submitted. All refunds must be requested within one year. Unclaimed funds will then become the property of the Ivy Preparatory Academy cafeteria.

MEDICATION Medication must be brought to school in the original bottle with a label that clearly displays the following information: the child’s name; dosage; name of the drug; physician’s name; and the name and phone number of the pharmacy that filled the prescription. Non-prescription medication may be dispensed if accompanied by a parents note stating it is medically necessary, otherwise non-prescription medication will be taken from the scholar and kept in the office until it can be returned to a parent. All medication, however, must be kept in the front office and must be picked-up on the last day of school or will be discarded.

OFFENSIVE TOUCHING Offensive touching is intentionally touching another person, either with part of the body or with any instrument, thereby causing offense or alarm to the person, and is not permitted. A scholar guilty of offensive touching will be subject to suspension and possible police involvement.

OUTSTANDING BALANCES Any scholar that has an outstanding balance (meal account, fieldtrip, etc) will not be allowed to retrieve records until that financial obligation is met.

PICK-UP PROCEDURES Only parents or alternate pick-up representatives indicated on the registration form will be permitted to pick-up a scholar from school. These individuals will be required to supply photo identification in order to pick-up scholars. If alternative arrangements need to be made this information must be faxed to the school office along with a copy of a parent or

guardian driver’s license making the request. This is necessary to ensure that only authorized people are picking up scholars from school. All scholars are expected to be picked-up by 4:15 p.m. unless they are staying for PREP/Enrichment or Homework Support and their pick-up time is 5:15 p.m. For scholars that frequently remain after 5:30pm, the school may contact the local authorities.

POSSESSION OR USE OF TOBACCO AND TOBACCO RELATED PRODUCTS Possession or use of tobacco and tobacco related products by scholars are not permitted on school grounds or during school sponsored events. A scholar violating this policy will be immediately suspended from school. Subsequent violations will result in longer suspensions and may involve more serious disciplinary measures including a hearing for possible dismissal.

POSSESSION OF A FIREARM OR WEAPON/DANGEROUS INSTRUMENT OR LOOK ALIKE WEAPON/DANGEROUS INSTRUMENT Possession of a firearm, weapon/dangerous instrument or object designed or intended to look like a firearm or weapon/dangerous instrument, and/or conspiring to conceal or hide a firearm or weapon/dangerous instrument. A weapon/dangerous instrument is defined as any instrument from which a shot may be discharged; a knife of any sort; switchblade knife; box cutter, razor; or any other article commonly used or designated to inflict bodily harm or to intimidate others, or using in an aggressive and threatening manner articles commonly used for other purposes. A scholar violating this policy will immediately be suspended from school and the police will be contacted. In addition, the scholar will be required to appear before the review board.

PROGRESS REPORTS To improve communication with the home as well as positively impact scholar achievement, progress reports will be issued every 4 ½ weeks. A progress report will be issued to scholars.

PROMOTION POLICY Promotion to the next grade level is based on the scholar’s year in high school. 1st year of high school, the scholar is classified as a 9th grader 2nd year of high school, the scholar is classified as a 10th grader 3rd year of high school, the scholar is classified as an 11th grader 4th year of high school and she is on track with her graduation requirements, the scholar is classified as a 12th grader Scholars who are deficient in their graduation requirements are required to repeat the course during the school year or during the summer. Repeated courses will not replace the failed course on the transcript.

RE-ENROLLMENT PROCEDURES Re-enrollment packets will be distributed during the month of February 2014. Packets must be returned with required documentation by the due date in order to secure a scholar’s seat for the upcoming school year.

REPORT CARDS Report Cards will be distributed by semester. The semester report will indicate the performance and accomplishments of the scholar during that quarter. The scholar will receive a grade for performance and accomplishments of the class assignments, and comments regarding her performance and behavior in class. The final report will be mailed home.

SATURDAY ACADEMY Ivy Preparatory Academy will utilize Saturday Academy as an enrichment and supportive tool of our school curriculum. Saturday Academy can be reserved for scholars who are having challenges mastering standards and have been identified by school benchmarking exams, teacher recommendations and scholar grades. Saturday Academy will take place at the school and teachers discretion.

SCHOOL AND PERSONAL PROPERTY Scholars are responsible for the proper care of books, calculators, computers, supplies, and all other school property. Scholars are responsible for the replacement cost of any school property that may be damaged, lost, or stolen. Scholars should not bring expensive clothing, valuables, or large amounts of money to school. Keep in mind that Ivy Prep is not responsible for damaged, lost, or stolen personal property.

Scholars are directly responsible for the laptops and chargers provided by Connections Academy. Parents are financially responsible for any damage that occurs to the laptops and/or chargers. Educational records will not be released to parents until all financial obligations to Connections Academy have been resolved.

SELLING GOODS/SERVICES Scholars are not allowed to sell items at school that have not been approved by School Administration. If any scholar is found selling items on campus that have not been approved by School Administration, the items will be confiscated and not returned. Any funds that are collected will be donated to the Ivy Prep School Store.

SICK SCHOLARS When possible, scholars are asked to persevere through illnesses because we know that coming to school ready to learn every day is the key to successfully climbing the mountain to college. However, if the illness is extreme enough that the child needs to stay home the following must occur: - Parent must contact school in the morning before school starts to let us know child is sick and how long they will be out of school. - When a scholar returns, they will be given one extra day for every day they were absent. If they were absent two days, they will have four days to make up the assignments, and so on. - If it is known that the child will be absent, the child’s parent or guardian is encouraged to come to the school and get work for child so that it can be turned in when the child returns to school.

SLANTING

- Scholars at Ivy Prep are expected to always sit in their SLANT position while instruction is taking place. - SLANT is an acronym for the following: o S – Sit up o L – Listen o A – Ask & Answer Questions o N – Nod to Acknowledge Understanding o T – Track the Speaker

STEALING, POSSESSING, TRANSFERRING STOLEN GOODS Taking, possessing or transferring the property of another without consent of the owner is considered stealing. Scholars who steal, possess or transfer stolen goods jeopardize their privilege of attending the school. An administrator will determine the appropriate penalty after review of each case. Proper restitution must always be made.

SCHOLAR AGREEMENT FORM In order to ensure a positive learning experience for all scholars, each scholar at Ivy Prep is required to sign and abide by the Ivy Preparatory Academy Agreement Form. By signing this agreement form, scholars promise to take responsibility for their learning, maintain a high level of decorum at all times, and make a positive contribution to the school and community.

SUSPENSIONS (also see “Disciplinary System”) Suspensions are administered for serious infractions of the rules such as insubordination, fighting, smoking in the building, and being in unauthorized areas, major disruptions, repeated misconduct, and vandalism. Suspensions may be in-house or external and may vary in duration depending on the nature of the offense and at the discretion of the administration. While serving an external suspension, a scholar may not be on school property for any reason during the school day. The scholar may not attend nor participate in any school-sponsored activities (plays, concerts, athletic events, rehearsals, practices, etc.) While suspended, any work missed should be made up according to guidelines under make-up work. When a scholar is suspended, a parent is contacted immediately by phone. A scholar is not permitted to leave the building until a parent arrives. A letter outlining the reason for the suspension follows this telephone notification. If a parent cannot be contacted, the scholar will remain in the school office for the remainder of the day.

TARDY POLICY 16

Being on time for school is a rule at Ivy Preparatory Academy as well as an important habit to develop. At Ivy Prep, we pride ourselves in ensuring that all scholars arrive on time and prepared for each day of instruction. The following are guidelines regarding the tardy policy:        

School begins at 8:00 am each day. Scholars arriving to school 8:15am and after are formally considered tardy and/or absent and MUST be checkedin by a parent or guardian to avoid receiving a consequence or marked as absent for the day. Scholars who are tardy are not allowed to check-in without a parent or guardian. All scholars who arrive after 9:00am will be marked as unexcused tardy for the day until otherwise noted in the form of a proper written excuse. (ie: medical, dental, vision, etc.) Scholars who are checked-in at 12:30pm or later will be marked as absent, unless noted in the form of a proper written excuse by parent/guardian for determination of an excused absence. Scholars who are checked-out anytime before 12:30pm will be marked as an excused absence. Scholars are considered late/tardy to class if they are not in their designated classroom when the bell rings. Teachers or the Counselor will contact the scholar’s parent or guardian if/when such behavior persists. Scholars who are habitually tardy will be referred to the Dean of Scholars and Principal for disciplinary action (Saturday School or In/Out School Suspension). Please be mindful that in the state of Georgia, 3 consecutive tardies are equal to 1 absence and must be enforced by every school.

Consequences: 1. The first 3 tardies are recorded with Registrar. 2. After the 10th tardy, parents will be required to meet with the School Attendance Review Committee. Excused tardies include, but are not limited to the following:  Illness  Doctor’s Appointments  Extreme Family Emergency  Extreme Inclement Weather  Transportation Company Delays  Family Military Issues  Observance of Religious Holidays  Other Tardies Deemed Excused at the Discretion of the School. Unexcused tardies include, but are not limited to the following:  Oversleeping (parent or child)  Missed van or carpool ride  Carpool Issues  Sleeping In  Other Tardies Deem Unexcused at the Discretion of the School. As reporting to school on time is key to academic success, it is important that scholars report to each class on time and prepared to learn. In accordance with Ivy Prep’s Class Transition Policy, all scholars are required to report to class on time. If a scholar is late to class without a pass from a teacher, staff member, or administrator, the scholar will receive a Level 1 demerit. Scholars may be assigned lunch detention, Saturday School, or referral to the Dean of Scholars if tardy behavior is excessive.

TECHNOLOGY ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY Scholars are required to bring their laptops and chargers to school everyday. If a scholar does not bring her laptop and charger, a parent will be required to bring the laptop to the school, or pick her up. As every scholar has to needs the computer and internet to access curriculum materials and complete assignments, it is a requirement that she brings her laptop and charger everyday. Inappropriate use, defined as accessing sites that are not directly related to the curriculum, or vandalism by scholars will result in disciplinary action.

TRACKING Tracking at Ivy Prep is required to ensure that scholars are attentive and engaged during discussions, conversations and instruction. This means that:

- All eyes should be on whoever is speaking. Eyes should not leave the speaker. If there is dialogue between two or more people in the room, it should look like a tennis match. Heads should be moving back and forth to look at the different speakers. - Eyes should remain on the speaker in the classroom even if a visitor enters the room to ensure active participation. - Once tracking has been taught, all scholars are expected to demonstrate this behavior.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS To request high school transcripts, you must complete a Transcript Request Form in the front office. The turnaround time for completing your request is 3 school days. The fee per transcript is $2. Rush transcript orders will be completed with a 24-hour turnaround time for $15. Official transcripts are mailed directly to the institution only. Ivy Prep will not send SAT and ACT scores. These must be requested from the testing agency.

USE OF THE OFFICE PHONE Scholars will not be able to use their personal phone during class time and while on campus. Scholars will be able to use the office phone: -In case of a school emergency. -When instructed by school or office administrator. -In case of loss of transportation, uniform needs, or other urgent needs. -After-school they may use phone in the fitness area (not front office), with permission from teacher.

USE OF DISTRACTING ITEMS Scholars are prohibited from using in the building any walkmans, portable stereos, MP3 players, skateboards, rollerblades, cards, toys, or any other items deemed inappropriate or distracting to the educational atmosphere. Scholars violating this policy will have the item confiscated and turned over to an administrator who may return the item to the scholar at a later date. Subsequent violations may result in a demerit being issued, parent contact, permanent confiscation, and additional serious consequences. A scholar who refuses to turn over a distracting item to a staff member will be considered to be insubordinate and may receive additional disciplinary actions.

VANDALISM / DESTRUCTION OF SCHOOL PROPERTY The school cannot tolerate vandalism of any kind. If found guilty of vandalism, the scholar will be required to pay for the damages and be referred to the administration for further disciplinary action. If the vandalism is significant, the student will be suspended.

VISITORS For the safety of all scholars, all visitors must report to the office to obtain a visitor’s pass. All visitors must show their ID with the receptionist upon retrieval of the visitor’s pass. Upon departure, the visitor will then receive their ID upon returning the Ivy Prep Visitor Pass. The only acceptable form of identification is a State Issued Identification Card or Driver’s License.

WITHDRAWALS In order to process a withdrawal from the school, the parent/guardian must come into the school office and complete the necessary paperwork. At the time of withdrawal, parents will be responsible for bringing any scholar financial accounts current prior to withdrawal of a scholar. Parent is responsible for returning their scholar’s laptop to Connections. Withdrawal packets will not be released to parent until Connections has received the laptop and checked it for damage. This process can take up to 2 weeks depending on the time of year. Once Ivy Prep has received clearance from Connections, the parent will be notified that their withdrawal packet is available for pick up.

Ensure that my child will be sent to school healthy, clean, rested, and prepared to learn with proper supplies. Purchase uniforms from Buckhead Uniform and ensure that my daughter is abiding by the uniform policy every day. As stated in the student handbook, if my child comes to school out of uniform, I will bring my child the appropriate clothing as soon as I am contacted. Supervise my scholar’s homework to ensure that all assignments are completed on schedule. I will not make excuses for late/missing assignments. (Please refer to the make-up/late work policy in the student handbook). Actively monitor PowerSchool to remain abreast on my daughter’s academic progress Be responsible for payment of any fees that have accrued (meals, fieldtrips, etc) Participate in the Ivy Parent Engagement Program, donating 15 hours of time to assist with the needs of Ivy Prep. Recording of volunteer hours will be maintained in the front office. ½ of the hours must be completed by Winter Break (Dec. 19, 2014), with the remaining ½ of the hours needing to be completed by May 20, 2015. If I decide that donating volunteer hours are not feasible, I will present a check in the amount of $100 ($50 per semester) to Ivy Preparatory Academy as a donation. Read and use information that is sent home to keep parents informed Support the faculty, staff, and volunteers as they work to help make my child a productive, cooperative member of the school and community. Uphold the Ivy Prep culture by supporting the Ivy Prep Conduct and Discipline Code. I understand that after reasonable interventions with regard to discipline have been attempted without success, my daughter may lose her seat at Ivy Prep. At the 15th day of an excused or unexcused absence a meeting will be scheduled with the Principal, and the scholar may be asked to withdraw. I understand that upon my scholar reaching 30 demerits, I will be requested to withdraw her from Ivy Prep.

I will not schedule family vacations that interfere with the school calendar, so that my child does not miss class. If I have a concern, I will communicate in a respectful tone with Ivy Prep teachers and staff. It is imperative that I pick-up my child promptly at the end of each school day. The use of technology is a privilege, and any inappropriate use/damage of any computer will result in restriction of use and possibly charged for any repairs/replacements for such damage. The policy of Ivy Prep is to promote scholars from grade to grade is based solely on academic performance. Ivy Prep requires that any change of contact information (address, phone number, email, etc) become immediately available to the school. Failure to abide by the Parent Commitment Contract will require that I attend a Commitment Conference with the Principal.
