HID Lamps and LED Retrofit Kits Comparison CONTENT ______________________________________________________________________________________...
HID lamps are gas-discharge lamps that replace the filament of ordinary bulbs with a capsule of gas. As soon as current is passing the metal vapor in the capsule, free electrons collide with atoms in the vapor. This collision is an arc discharge between two close electrodes that is setting energy free in form of visible radiation. The light is characterized by the metal vapor type. HID lamps need some time to reach their full light intensity as the gas needs to warm up and to cool down before a restart is possible. Switching cycles have a negative impact on the total lifetime of the lamps. HID lamps are used in areas where high levels of light over a large area are
required.
