DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE 2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Welcome from the Chair Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine! This annual report summarizes our activities from July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014.
Collaboration and strategic planning has been the focus of many of the Family Medicine departmental activities over the past year. Our department led an interdisciplinary team to recruit primary care physicians in preparation for the opening of our new extension campus in Dublin which led to the hire of 5 exceptional educators from family medicine and pediatric backgrounds. We have emphasized an increase in collegiality and collaboration between our department members, and are encouraging additional faculty development and scholarly activity. Our educational committee sponsored an evening workshop on scholarly activity and brought in a speaker from the Society of Teachers in Family Medicine to facilitate this. Our leadership committee has sponsored numerous events to engage students in the myriad of career possibilities of a family physician, including leadership, education and clinical service. DFM faculty continue to play key roles in leadership positions within the curriculum. The Introduction to Primary Care block, led by Jane Balbo, DO, was created to engage the students in primary care and to explore the patient-centered medical home. Jennifer Gwilym, DO, and Daryn Straley, DO, serve as leaders of the Clinical Skills curricula for years 1 and 2 osteopathic medical students. The Department and the ARHI Diabetes Center continue to maintain the Primary Care Fellowship in Diabetology with Jay Shubrook, DO, serving as director. Jane Balbo, DO, serves as director of the Primary Care Associateship Program and is collaborating with the OMM Department to develop a combined associateship for our Dublin students. Our faculty are actively involved with curricular design through block teams and curricular committee work. Several members are involved in the Primary Care Restructuring Taskforce, exploring potential synergy between the primary care departments of Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Pediatrics and Social Medicine. Programmatic and clinical research continues to increase pace! DFM faculty members, Dawn Graham, PhD, Jane Hamel-Lambert, PhD, Randall Longenecker, MD, and myself, have led programmatic initiatives in excess of $1.5 million dollars in public service grant funding. Throughout the year, faculty demonstrate every day how they support our growing community within local, state, national and international venues. Our faculty have had a substantial global presence, including Brazil, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Latvia, Spain, and Sri Lanka, providing direct patient care or presenting in educational programs. We not only provide care, but train others to provide care for years into the future. Our clinical practices are quite diverse ranging from full family medicine practices to more specialized campus care, express care, nursing home care, palliative care, and hospice home visit practice encompassing a true primary care approach of caring for individuals and families from birth to death. The Department continues to actively recruit individuals that share our mission of enhancing primary care through teaching, research, and service.

DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE 2013-2014 ANNUAL REPORT
The Department of Family Medicine was one of the founding departments when the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine was created in 1976. It is a diverse group of physicians, psychologists and educators who provide high quality clinical services, educational activities at all levels of the learning continuum and research. This document will briefly show who we are and what we do.
MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Family Medicine is the largest clinical department within the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The departments’ mission is: to serve as role models and teachers of undergraduate medical students at all levels of training; to serve as trainers of postgraduate students; to provide high quality clinical services to the residents of southeastern Ohio and throughout the state;
to advance research done in the setting of an osteopathic medical college.
STRUCTURE The department is structured to reflect the academic, research, and clinical services provided. We are the home to the largest group of primary care physicians in the college. We have recently added a Division of Faculty Development and provide these services throughout the State. We provide numerous course coordinators, course block team leaders, and facilitators. Faculty members provide educational content from the first day of medical school throughout the final year of residency training. Primary Care Associateship Family Medicine (FM) The Primary Care Associateship is a competitive undergraduate program designed to provide interested osteopathic medical students an opportunity to “try out” a career in academia. The Associates become junior faculty members within the department for an additional year prior to graduation and are integral teachers in our medical school curriculum. The Associateship is designed to promote interest in Osteopathic medical education, and is intended to enhance the development of future teachers of Family Medicine. Associates follow a core academic experience including clinical work, teaching within the curriculum, and development of a major project (i.e. research, curricular, or advanced certificate). Associates are encouraged to explore new avenues and develop their own project interest, with the goals of a publication and/or a presentation. Dr. Jane Balbo is the program director and Michelle Bobo is the program coordinator. http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/dfm/FamilyMedicineFellowship.htm
