Learn to create beautiful Papel Picado images! The "Art Above the Shelves" program is cosponsored by the Joshua Tree Friends of the Library and the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council. The works of Jenifer Palmer-Lacy are displayed in the Joshua Tree Branch Library and will be on view throughout December. Papel picado ("perforated paper, literally peckered paper") is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. It is considered a Mexican folk art. The designs are commonly cut from tissue paper using a guide and small chisels, creating as many as forty banners at a time. See the Friends of the Joshua Tree Library site: http://www.joshuatreefol.org/exhibit.htm In its eighth year of fear, the Theatre 29 Halloween Haunt has become legendary in its ever shifting mood and its ability to terrify. The entire theatre and its grounds are transformed into a lair of undead delights, have you got the nerve to face its demonic presence? This season, you will brave the undead horrors of a Wax Museum, where not everything is as quiet as it seems! Tickets will be available only at the door with tours launching ever 10-15 minutes. Season ticket holders get their first tour included with their season ticket purchase. The cost for the Halloween Haunt will be $7.00 theatre29.org/html/halloween_haunt.html

Saturday, October 31 at Sky's The Limit: Spectacles of the Fall Sky Sky's the Limit Observatory and Nature Center, 9697 Utah Trail, invites guests for a tour of the best cosmic wonders in the fall sky at a free public event thatbegins at 7:10 pm and ends around 10:00 pm on Saturday, October 31. On display are the Ring Nebula, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the Double Cluster. Also visible are the outer planets Uranus and Neptune. The summer triangle and Milky Way are still high in the sky. This short event ends at 10 pm because of the Moonrise. The top 5 most prominent constellations are Aquila (the Eagle), Cygnus (the Swan), Pegasus (the Winged Horse), Cassiopeia (the Seated Queen), and Andromeda (the Princess). STL has a variety of types and sizes of telescopes set up along winding sidewalks, and guests are welcome to use them or may bring their own binoculars and scopes as well. STL volunteers will make every effort to assist as needed in setting up and using equipment. All are encouraged to come around sunset to have time to visit other campus educational attractions before the cosmic tour begins at dark. Everyone should dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring snacks, water bottles, a small flashlight, and chairs. Children under 16 must be accompanied by adults. No pets and no smoking allowed on the STL campus, and visitors must carry out all trash. Guests are cautioned that the seasonal sky is very unpredictable and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind. October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month The Town of Yucca Valley is introducing two a workshop to assist residents in learning how to protect themselves from cybercrime.

Holiday Craft Faire Catch the spirit of the season at the Town of Yucca Valley's Holiday Craft Faire on Saturday, December 5th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Yucca Valley Community Center. Tackle your holiday shopping and pick up unique gifts for that hard to buy for person. A long-time local tradition, the Holiday Craft Faire is a favorite opportunity to shop for exceptional holiday gifts in indoor comfort. You'll find new gift ideas, original arts and crafts, sculpture, ceramics, specialty foods, home decor, clothing, floral designs, jewelry, photography, soaps, candles, toys and much more. More than fifty artisans and crafters will be displaying a variety of quality, handcrafted items at this year's event. Admission is free for shoppers. Artisans interested in the Faire are invited to submit an application. Space is limited. Vendor registration is underway through November 12th or when all tables have been sold. Cost is $25.00 per table and is limited to one table per vendor. All items sold must be handmade and sold by the artist or craftsperson; commercial products are not permitted. A valid seller's permit is required and must be provided by the deadline. Registration forms and additional vendor information is available at the Community Services office located at the Yucca Valley Community Center.

Cap-and-Trade Workshop with SoCal Gas The Southern California Gas Company, in collaboration with SCAG and our other cosponsors, will be hosting an engaging and valuable discussion on how to access California's cap-and-trade grant funding on Nov. 18, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., at the SoCalGas Energy Resource Center in Downey. The state is expected to raise billions of dollars in auction revenues through 2020 and will distribute these funds through a competitive grant process in an effort to further reduce greenhouse gases in the state. Come learn more about the programs, gain insights from experienced program applicants and meet organizations who provide resources for accessing cap-and-trade funds. Learn what it takes to produce a successful application and hear what types of programs are being created for the next round of funding. This workshop is free and those encouraged to attend include: Representatives from cities, counties, public higher education, other local governments, transit agencies, low-income housing developers and non-profits interested in partnering on a community project. We found slides of: Grubstake Days * Pioneertown Parades *Joshua Tree Turtle Races- circa 1950-1970 Please stop in to help identify people, share your memories or comment on the floats, fashions and the community spirit back in the "Good Old Days." Bring your own photos, scrapbooks, poodle skirts or other memorabilia to share.

November 11 join the Morongo Basin Historical Society 2nd Wednesday Lecture Series "Wayiki (to eat): Traditional Native Foods" is presented by Leslie Mouriquand -certified Master Desert Gardener and member of the Chia Café Collective who also experiments with native plants in her garden. Mouriquand has been researching prehistoric uses and propagation of native food plants, as well as the related 'foodways' of local indigenous cultures. She will focus on the history of Mesquite as an important food source for early Native Americans, discussing preparation methods, medicinal uses and how mesquite may benefit people today. The Morongo Basin Historical Society's 2nd Wednesday Lecture Series is held at the Hi-Desert Nature Museum Yucca Valley 57116 29 Palms Hwy. Lecture begins at 5:30. Donation is $5.00.

After a successful run in New York, The Off-Broadway musical FABULOUS DIVAS OF BROADWAY, with star and creator Alan Palmer paying tribute 32 theatrical divas, is coming to Theatre 29 for a limited run. After touring the production throughout the United States Palmer is bringing it to Twentynine Palms for two performances only, at 7:00 pm Saturday, November 7th and a Matinee at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 8th. In this unique, comic journey, actor/singer/storyteller Alan Palmer offers backstage tales of his life in "the business" while portraying larger-thanlife stars as the stars as the show's guides.
