Steeped in tradition, weddings have featured many of the same components for centuries. Those about to tie the knot may feel somewhat limited in their ability to shape their weddings into unique celebrations of their relationships and love for one another. Although it may not seem like there are many opportunities to put your own stamp on the wedding, there are plenty of ways to do just that. When looking to personalize your wedding ceremony, determine if there might be anything blocking you from doing so. For example, if yours will be a religious ceremony, there may be certain rites that need to be followed. Secular ceremonies may offer more opportunities to customize. • Vows – vows are one of the easiest ways to put a personal touch on your wedding. You can select the words you want to exchange during the ceremony as well as any readings during the service. Work with your officiant to narrow down particular phrasing or sentiments that fit with your vision of the wedding and relationship. • Participants – wedding party members fulfill certain roles during the ceremony, but they are not limited to those tasks alone. Consider asking wedding party members or other friends or family members to take on specialized roles in the wedding. They may be able to do certain readings, escort guests to their seats, light candles, or sing and participate in other ways. • Musical interludes – choose music that connects with your personalities as a couple rather than selecting standard songs merely because they are the easier route. Work with the organist or other musicians and request that they perform or play musical pieces that you enjoy. • Candle lighting – many couples like to incorporate candle-lighting components to their ceremonies. Lighting unity candles blends two families together into one in a symbolic way. Other couples choose different traditions, such as mixing two different-coloured sands in a new vessel to represent the joining of two lives together. You can consider these types of additions for your wedding ceremony or come up with your own unique tradition. Impart a special touch to a wedding ceremony in any number of ways. Doing so will help set this special day apart in the minds of guests and make it even more memorable to look back on as a couple.

Innisfail wedding event all about local BY Lea Smaldon, MVP Staff

A wedding-related service provider in Innisfail intends to showcase what she considers an often-overlooked segment of the town’s business community next month. Fawna Sidoryk, owner of Lilac and Lace Floral Design, is organizing a workshop-type event centring on linking local wedding-related businesses with potential area customers. “There are so many fantastic companies here. I think everyone defaults to ‘I have to go to the city’. I think it’s just a matter of knowing what’s here,” she said.

The Feb. 25 event in Divots at the Innisfail Golf Course is not a trade show, Sidoryk emphasized. “It’s more of a roundtable, Q and A event, informal for Our beautiful banquet rooms can the most part,” she said. As a wedding photographer for the last eight years, Sidoryk said she knows what a big job it is to organize a wedding. “With basically everyone in one room where you can talk and ask questions, you can literally get it all done in one shot at this,” she said. And businesses recognize that the downturn in the economy may be a factor in wedding considerations this year. “Feasibililty is what it’s all about and supporting each other and going local.”

NIBLOCK, VIOLet MaMIe (Nee NeLsON) aprIL 27, 1923 - raINy CreeK Near BeNtLey, aLBerta JaNuary 16, 2017 - INNIsfaIL, aLBerta

It is with great sadness we announce that, surrounded by family, Violet Niblock peacefully passed away in the Innisfail Hospital on January 16th at the age of 93 years. Violet was a wonderful lady, who treasured her family and made friendships easily; many of which lasted entire lifetimes. Violet was born and went to school in the Rainy Creek area of Alberta (near Bentley), the second oldest girl of eight children of Marius and Ava Nelson. Family picnics of the large extended Nelson and Burger families were a special remembrance. In 1941, Violet married Joe Niblock and moved to the Innisfail area. First to a homestead farm, and then to a house across from the Niobe elevator which Joe ran until his retirement. They then moved to Innisfail where they lived for the remainder of each of their lives. Joe and Violet had 3 children, Gail (John Mann), Larry (Joan), and David (Valerie). They were also blessed with 7 grandchildren, Crystal (Heidi), Kevin (Christine), Stuart, Scott, Leanne, Jenny (George Lesko), and James, as well as 9 great grandchildren, Darren, Emily and Cassie, Alex, Katie, and Ava, Ivory, Makiah and Phoenix. Violet is survived by her sister, Kay (Scotty Cameron, 1998), her brother, Nels (Annette), and their families. Violet was predeceased by her husband, Joe (1985), daughter Gail (1998), her parents Marius and Ava Nelson, her sister Almeda and brothers Samuel, Vincent, Andrew, and Walter. For the past 20 years, Aunty Violet was the last senior member of the Niblock generation, and will be deeply missed by all members of the Niblock, Daines, Champ, Lewellyn, and Drummond families, who loved hearing her stories. Violet loved to garden both vegetables and flowers, with her flower gardens always having the brightest and biggest displays of colours. Hand watering and fertilizing always seemed to bring out the best of all of her plants. Violet also volunteered her entire life, even into her late 80’s. She volunteered at the Innisfail Legion, Meals on Wheels, Food Bank, the Historical Village, the Innisfail Tourist Bureau, and all church functions, as she was a long-term member of both the United and Presbyterian churches. Violet lived a full life. She loved to bake and cook, to curl, to fish and camp, and to spend time with friends and family. Violet also worked at the Innisfail variety store and Houseman’s drug store. She especially liked working with the customers, she knew everyone’s name, and they all knew her. Violet’s family was very important to her and she spent all the time she could talking and visiting with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They remember wonderful family holidays, camping in the motor home and fishing, her candy jar that was never empty, her tight hugs, and her constant love and encouragement. The Niblock family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Maree and the staff at the Innisfail Hospital for making Violet’s last few days comfortable. If desired, in lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of ones’ choice.
